REVIVING 1990S DIGITAL DRESS-UP DOLLS WITH SMOOCH

What is the Kisekae Set System: It is a system to make digital dress up dolls!
Created in 1991 by MIO.H for use in a Japanese BBS. Pre-web!!! By separating the system from the assets of the dolls, you can make the systems much smaller
CEL image format. They have a transparent background and indexed colors like GIFs!
There is also the KCF Palette Format. Each GUF stores its own palette, with CELs there is a shared KCF palette file. Which is a file size cost savings. You do not have to repeat your color info per file.
Having your palette in another file makes palette swapping really easy! Just swap the KCF file!
CNF configuration files dictate layering, grouping, setting, and positions!
KiSS dolls have a lot of files, so they used LhA, the most popular compression format in Japan at the time.
In 1994, KLS (a user) created the KiSS General Specification
1995 FKiSS is born by Dov Sherman and Yav, which adds sounds, and animation!
FKiSS 2, 3, 4, two versions of FKiSS 5! So much innovation!
1995-2005 huge growth in KiSS! Increase of access, mainstreaming of anime, younger and more female audience.
2007-2012: KiSS declined due to it being much harder to make. All the old tutorials were written for older systems, English-speaking KiSS-making died out by 2010
The Sims, and other doll making was more accessible.
But, why KiSS? If I can make dolls in other places. They are great snapshots of the pre-internet world, and how play online evolved early on.
Lots of fun dolls were available, and it would be cool to save it.
Picrew is a modern thing people use to make dolls.
Tagi Academy is a tamagochi game within KiSS. Impressive!
KiSS has an open specification!!!! That is super cool! That means anyone can make your own viewer, as opposed to a closed system in The Sims.
So, why NOT make a KiSS interpreter?!!
Libby made Smooch, a KiSS renderer written in Haskell, which at the Recurse Center!
Smooch used a web framework called Fn (fnhaskell.com)
Had to make a CNF file parser using Parsec library that uses parsing combinators.
She created a data type that houses everything that can be in a CNF file, and parses it correctly in priority order.
Parsing is a great candidate for test-driven development. You can write a test with a bad CNF file, and then make sure your parser handles it.
The parser translates CNF lines into JSON. Uses the ASON library to translate into JSON.
First tried cel2pnm, coded with help from Mark Dominus at Recurse Center Made a C program that converted cels to portable bitmaps, which could be translated into PNGs.
Then JuicyPixels was created to translate palette files directly in Haskell
Now it is converted to JavaScript! No libraries, just JS!
Using PNGs in JS, thought, made it hard to click on parts of the clothing! Since it is squares.
So, you use ghost canvases! You use tow canvases, one on top of the other, to find the color of the pixel you clicked on, If you clicked on a scarf color, it will pick the scarf, and if you pick the sweater, you get the sweater!
Libby just added FKiSS 1 to Smooch! So we have animations now! The animations are basically event-based scripting the CEL files.
Smooch translates FKiSS to JSON, then the interpreter translates the JSON to JavaScript!
An action in FKiSS is translated into a function in JS. To do this you have to use bind in JS.
The events become CustomEvents in JS! So it looks like a regular event on the DOM.
What is the future of KiSS? Let's get more people making KiSS dolls!!! So why not make it easy to make dolls using PNGs.
How can we make people interested in building KiSS dolls and KiSS tooling.

Wow!! A brand new KiSS doll in 2022! And its gorgeous! I'm not familiar with the source material but I'm very impressed with the level of detail and pixel artistry (especially that bicycle!) in this doll.

Soft announcement re: Patreon. I cannot sustain the model I'm doing (per-post). I'm going to have to switch to Monthly, March 1st or April 1st I'm not sure yet. It's going to hit *hard* as an income shift - I cannot sustain that loss either. It's kinda no-win.
I won't be able to take many or complex/involved commissions to make up for the losses. The only exceptions are going to be portraits - people or their pets - or like, do-whatever-art band poster kinda deals.
There's been a years-long kinda burnout, and I can feel a recovery of sorts, but I need TIME to spend on the art, to experiment, and to grow it again.
Hyperbole perhaps, because I dunno how else to say it.
Lately, when I can get air in, I exhale like this:
And those are the breaths keeping me alive.
I've tried everything for so long, I dunno what else I can do. A Patron model is all I can handle, but we're kinda in the worst time to court patrons so...
I just know I can't let go of it again for the sake of survival.

I just added six new sets to the Smooch demo, including Chikuko by Kimiki (2002), Sasami by Wedge (1994), and Playgirl by Light (1995)!
Smooch also now works on mobile as well as desktop!
At this point, Smooch can render all but two of the non-FKiSS Otakuworld Editor's Award dolls. I think that's good enough that I'm ready to move forward on the web app part of the project (making it so that anyone can sign up, upload, and view dolls).

Smooch's pixel art rendering has always looked very fuzzy (left) but I was worried fixing it would be hard so I avoided it. Today I finally looked into it and the fix was so easy!

Nice picks! I love Athemes! She has such a cute pose.
Weird fact about Playgirl - I've been using it as a test doll for my viewer, so I've been looking at it very closely. Just today I noticed a cel file called "tanpon.cel". It turns out this is the only doll I know of that includes menstrual products! (The doll is wearing a hidden tampon in set 2 and a pad in set 4.) I have no idea if this is a kink thing or just a joke. 😂 Gotta love early KiSS dolls....

Eowyn by Aragonite
Like I may have said before Aragonite has made a ton of epic KiSS dolls, and she's made a decent handful of LOTR ones too, much to my happiness! Eowyn is my all-time favorite female character from LOTR and I'm so in love with all the clothing items, accessories, and hairstyle options for this doll! I'm also glad her outfits aren't solely based on the movie! (Although I can't remember whether this one was released before the PJ movies or not)

I gotta admit that I like this one even more than the Eowyn one because of all the drop dead gorgeous elven dresses and delicate accessories! I also like how there's some modern clothes/lingerie/swimsuits thrown in there!
Male and Female Ranma by Dov Sherman
I recently finished the first season of Ranma 1/2 and I love it so much! This is an old school KiSS doll that has a ton of outfits straight out of the manga and anime. I'm also so happy that P-Chan is here too, he owns my entire heart <3 And I need a plushie of him so bad
Athemes by Silent Angel
Although Athemes being a daughter of Artemis is illogical to me based on Artemis's vow to never marry or bear children, I still really like this doll. She's such a cute little goddess, her long white hair reminds me of Amalthea from The Last Unicorn, and she has an awesome wardrobe! It makes me wish that there were more KiSS dolls related to Greek/Roman mythology so I could dress up some of the main goddesses.
Anna by Eriol + Lydia
These two have collaborated on some amazing KiSS dolls, and I think I have most of them downloaded, if not all of them! This is one of my favorites, she's a vampire with a sick wardrobe, mostly in black, of course, but with a few dresses in bright colors thrown in! I particularly love the blue off the shoulder one that she's wearing in the screenshot. There's also a ton of neat details, such as when she says "At least (last?)! Blood!" when you click on one of the wine glasses.

This human/cat hybrid (sorry I don't know the exact name for it) is so cute and her wardrobe is so colorful, diverse, and fun!
Playgirl by Light
I love all of Light's dolls but this one has to be one of my topmost favorites. Her wardrobe is so chic and screams the 90s. And boy do I love the 90s!
Not sure if I'm going to make a third part after this but we'll see!
