The Concept of Time and Space (by metmuseum)
Ayse Pinar Gokpinar  PhD Candidate Institute of Fine Arts, NYU Produced around the time of the Islamic millennium (1000AH/1561-62AD) a  group of illustrations in the Falnama auguries focuses on eschatological themes, such as signs of the Apocalypse and the Judgment Day. It is likely that the artists portrayed a  contemporary perception of what the future would hold and what was expected to happen. Among the copies of the Falnama, the Topkapı Persian Falnama (TSM H.1702) is unique for its explicit relationship between the Qur'an and the manuscript's images.

Social Documentary and Pictorial Manipulation (by metmuseum)
Miles D. Orvell, Professor of English and American Studies, Temple University, discusses parallels between H. P. Robinson, a pictorial photographer, and W. Eugene Smith, a social documentary photographer. Both photographers, despite working in different genres of photography, manipulated the images while photographing them, sometimes asking participants to pose or repeat activities over and over again. This lecture is presented as part of the Truth, Lies, and Photographs symposium in conjunction with the exhibition Faking It: Manipulated Photography before Photoshop.

Pininfarina | Legendary Italian Design (by CraneTVVideoMagazine)
Launched in 1930 by Battista "Pinin" Farina, the Italian car design firm Pininfarina is now run by the founder's grandson Paolo Pininfarina. The company has partnered with all the big hitters over the years including Ferrari and Rolls-Royce and since 1986 Pininfarina Extra, headed up by Paolo Trevisan, has widened the Group's design scope to reach anything from the Eurostar to Lavazza coffee machines. Often collaborating with other heritage brands such as Scotch whisky label Chivas, much importance is placed on striking a balance between history and innovation. Visiting the HQ in Cambiano, Italy, we interview Pininfarina and Trevisan to discover why they see problems as opportunities and how this ethos has spurred their success despite Europe's current economic climate. www.pininfarinaextra.com

Gabriel Orozco: Asterisms at the Guggenheim - "Sandstars" (by guggenheim)
Gabriel Orozco: Asterisms at the Guggenheim, November 9, 2012—January 13, 2013. Guggenheim curator Joan Young and artist Gabriel Orozco discuss "Sandstars," a sculptural carpet of nearly 1,200 objects that were encountered and gathered from Isla Arena, Mexico, a wildlife reserve, which is simultaneously a whale mating ground, whale cemetery, and industrial wasteland.  The Deutsche Bank Series at the Guggenheim Gabriel Orozco: Asterisms, is a two-part sculptural and photographic installation comprising thousands of items of detritus the artist has gathered at two sites—a playing field near his home in New York and a protected coastal biosphere in Baja California Sur, Mexico, that is also the repository for flows of industrial and commercial waste from across the Pacific Ocean.

Between Art and Architecture: Oscar Tuazon (by Vera List Center)
The built environment has long been a source of inspiration to contemporary artists. From Gordon Matta-Clark’s abandoned building “cuts” to Doris Salcedo’s site-specific interventions and Dan Graham’s Pavilions, artists have utilized architecture as a means to engage the public. This fall, Public Art Fund presents a series of talks by a new generation of artists whose work engages the built environment as both a point of departure and source of inspiration. Drawing on elements of architectural and design history—including Modernism, Brutalism, and even DIY construction—these artists address the psychological, social, and cultural significance of the urban landscape.
Oscar Tuazon’s large-scale sculptures and architectural interventions address architecture, minimalism, and utilitarian constructions of outsider communities. Comprised of a combination of natural and industrial elements, his structures deal with the structural limits of materials, creating tension with the spaces they inhabit. His new Public Art Fund exhibition, People, is on view at Brooklyn Bridge Park from July 18, 2012 to April 2013. The exhibition features three sculptures that respond to the park’s physical landscape and incorporate concrete and tree trunks.
* * *
Oscar Tuazon was born in 1975 in Seattle and currently lives and works in Paris. He studied at the Cooper Union School of Art and attended the Whitney Museum of America Art Independent Study Program, New York. In 2011, he presented his work at the 54th Venice Biennale, and most recently, his work was included in the 2012 Whitney Biennial. Recent solo exhibitions include The Power Station, Dallas (2011); Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2010); Künsthalle Bern (2010); Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2010); Seattle Art Museum (2008); and the Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2007).
