Do I really have them? Is it an illusion? What if they knew who I was? What if they learned my secrets?

Everything he does is deliberate and flawless. I’m not so fucking stupid that I don’t realize he could also be using a mask on me. The most deceptive of all, because it most approximates reality. He knows how good I am at spotting irregularities. I’m jumpy, sensitive—tiny details are glaring sirens to me. He knows this one has to be good. A real work of art. Otherwise, it won’t fool me.

The fabric of our souls is thin - we've been wandering this world just to unite in this small corner of the universe.

That’s the thing about being an adult standing beside your childhood race car bed. Time collapses, and instead of the version of you you’ve built from scratch, you’re all the hackneyed drafts that came before, all at once.

I don't want the sharp look he just had back on me. It makes me feel vulnerable. No, not vulnerable, exposed. Exposed like a butterfly pinned to a board. Splayed out and held in place for him to look his fill.

I'd crawl on my hands and knees to have you on my tongue again. Ozzy's heated declaration floats back to me, reminding me that words can act like a healing balm. That words don't need to hurt. They can glide over my skin, making me shudder with pleasure instead.

“What should I tell you, Kate, hmm?” His voice is dark and sharp as he sinks his hands into my hips and pulls me close. “That your birthday is my lock code, that I keep your horribly sewn handkerchief in my journal at work, that I’ve archived every single photograph you’ve ever published, that I lure your cat to my house for cuddles, that I walk into bakeries in the fall just to see the foods you love, that I sit in your mother’s greenhouse and breathe in the scent of your favorite flowers, because anything you’ve touched, anything colored by the memory of you, are relics and I’m a supplicant?”

I want someone who doesn’t sit back and look at how the landscape of their life will change by adding me into it and weigh whether I’m worth the change. I want them to pull me into it with both hands and make it something new without a second thought.

There is beauty in the snowfall, in the way the light breaks through the trees at dawn…there’s even beauty in death, in the end of the world, the brevity of everything we will ever experience, the passing into nothing. But I’ve never seen beauty like you.
