Yeah so the main reason people are even bringing it up is because the Japanese translation is exactly “bland” in this way but that’s actually pretty ordinary for this kind of thing. The lines are relatively simple and can be expressed with a few words, and the vocal performance is meant to evoke the rest. So you’ll get for instance Galerius voiced like he’s Honda Tadakatsu but instead of a complex statement about the futility of rebel rats or whatever you’re just going to like command them to die directly, like you’re standing on stage.

Groups like Treehouse have also been criticized for this and the usual suspects have long been bitching about every fire emblem and every final fantasy or tactics ogre translation and at a certain point people are going to have to fucking accept that translators are in fact not machines and that they have to use their insight to complete a translation and if you don’t like it, learn fucking Japanese and appreciate the nuance yourself. You will never get that nuance “translating” the words alone and you might get the right words even but put across completely the wrong idea.

It’s a fine translation, translators are in fact artists, and the only people who bitch about this are losers. Who will probably keep bitching about it as long as they romanticize the output of a culture they refuse to more seriously engage with.

I haven't kept up with the localization discourse around Unicorn Overlord, and im not going to since what most of the people talk about has nothing to do with actual localization and it's all just another political shitslinging thing.

But having heard about how much they localisation has jazzed up the dialogue for the game, I have to wonder how fucking bland the writing for this game is in Japanese. As the game is, a lot of the time the overly thetrical writing with old timey english flourish is really the only thing makes a lot of the characters have anything stand out about them at all. In terms of just writing I mean obviously.
