Thoughts on Shadow Flight Culture
Based on notes from a couple of discord conversations / dumps
The emergence of the Veilspun sheds light on a few peculiar aspects of regional culture specifically in and around Wispwillow Grove. The denizens here have a strange way of things that can be confusing to outsiders. They pay special reverence to the eyes.
For centuries, Veilspun have lived in these woods, and the people, draconic and not, know their dangers well, even if many of them did not know the veracity or true source of said dangers. They know to guard their gaze for Veils may hypnotize anyone who looks upon them.
To reveal one's eyes is a great sign of trust, something done only in the safety of familiar company. Outside of the home gazes are cast away. To demand eye contact from a stranger is a great insult. To hide one's eyes from a friend is nothing short of a slap in the face.
Those from this region are easy to spot by their unusual behavior, never lingering in one spot for more than a moment. Multigaze dragons in particular stand out for their usually keeping all of their eyes covered or closed but one or two.
The practice of blindfolding originated here and thrives even in communities which have long forgotten the reason why such things are necessary.
Roads and trails are designed to be navigated by hearing, smell, and touch rather than vision.
All together it makes the region treacherous for outsiders to navigate both physically and socially as the slightest misstep could find them lost in either respect.
But it's better to be driven out by the locals for violating an unspoken rule than to open your eyes in the wrong place and be very much truly lost forever.

Imagine:
Pearlcatchers who lost their pearl that keep producing the slime for it. The slime drools from their mouth, coating their teeth… It keeps flowing, flowing, flowing…
Their teeth grow a little bit every day. Shined by the black liquid constantly spewing from the dragon’s mouth. Their teeth eventually fuse, growing into massive, deformed fangs that are made of pure, opalescent pearl.

If the banescales were eradicated because of their ferocity in battle, is that perhaps why the Flamecaller made coatls? They are so much softer than her first children. They speak in song and give gifts to share their affection. The encyclopedia describes them as "an agreeable lot" who give gifts to "placate enemies and competitors."
After the loss of the banescales, was the Flamecaller's heart so broken that she made children who would not prompt such extreme retaliation?
