I think AOS fandom is probably just a lot of “Where’s Fitz how dare they not give us Fitz they must hate him” right now which is very frustrating.
It’s sad that Iain is apparently not in much of this season. But it’s really mean and frankly weird to say that writers or people on the show hate him or vis versa.
First things first: There is a lack of Fitz because Iain was unavailable. If you think they would purposely write Fitz out you haven’t been watching the same show as the rest of us or reading the same interviews. Fitz is massively important to the show. Iain is massively important to the show. WHY was he unavailable? Don’t know for sure and frankly it’s no ones business but his. Actors are real, actual people and deserve privacy and respect and to not have everything they do scrutinized constantly.
But while everyone is speculating, here’s the thing: If there was any bad blood between Iain and the writers or anyone they would have just straight up written him out of the show full stop. They could have just Shonda Rhymes-ed him and written him off in some awful way that makes no sense if they really wanted. It would have been a hell of a lot easier for them to do than having to justify his disappearance throughout the season while still reminding us that Fitz is still out there somehow involved in all the chaos.
Meanwhile, if Iain had bad feelings towards the show he could have simply not come back at all. But we KNOW he’s coming back even if it’s briefly and ON TOP of that he’s still been involved in all kinds of promotional stuff despite still not even being glimpsed onscreen. He’s on the damn poster. He’s given multiple interviews. He’s involved in cast zooms in which he said how much he misses seeing everyone since they wrapped. And this is all a full year after the show finished filming. No one does that much unnecessary work unless they care about what they’re doing and the people they’re doing it with.
If you watch any of Elizabeth’s live YouTube videos she does during episodes, you’ve seen how much of the cast and crew she’s gotten to come onto her show. The AoS team clearly became a big family who still care about each other and keep in touch. Everyone undoubtedly did the absolute best they could, including Iain.
So please stop speculating and saying mean stuff and getting so angry at people who were just doing their very best to make something special for you to enjoy. For free. If you’re that upset, just go read some fan fiction like the rest of us.

When all is said and done, I hope that May and Coulson will be training the next generation of agents at the new academy. Some new recruit will be like, "Mr Coulson sir, we thought you were dead?" And May will appear from behind the students and give Coulson that "business now, but later..." look and say "he's just that good." The students will turn around, see Melinda freaking May and then pee their pants and all will be well with the world.

This.
I am just so impressed with the writing for this episode, specifically that fight scene in the pod. DJ Doyle did such an amazing job allowing Fitz and Simmons to basically air their dirty laundry in a way that was cathartic for both the audience and the characters. He also managed to make it equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking. He allowed us to laugh at some of the ridiculous obstacles that have kept these characters apart without reducing their experiences. I’m genuinely so grateful.
