Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).
When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".
When the boat is still being built, your say "it".
When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".
When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".
When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.
If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").
If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")
If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").
If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.
If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.
I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.

is it needlessly pedantic of me to get annoyed at people who think any 5/7/5 structure is an actual haiku? yeah, because haiku is innately untranslatable and therefore following the actual structure is not just pointless but actively impossible. however, this does not change the fact that i am annoyed. motherfucker doesn't even incorporate a kigo.

the secret to writing good smut that doesn't feel like you're just repeating the same words for junk and fucking over and over is to spend your effort writing about everything happening around the sex and everything happening inside the heads of the people having sex and before you know it you have four paragraphs of introspection and two paragraphs describing the space and it's okay to use the word cock again

I have attempted to generate a stellar map of Gunsmoke/NML, because I've been long fascinated by the supposed differences between the star positions and how that will influence the way humans see the night sky. First image is said map shown in equirectangular projection - which means equator areas are stretched out, while polar are squished together. This is a beta version, as I have not yet figured out how to work in the orbital movement.
Two images below the first one are showing the views from corresponding north and south poles of the planet in polar projection.
Under the cut an explanation on what suppositions have been made, and the method description.
Firstly, this method omits the celestial movements altogether, since that requres much more work. I want to address that in the future, because without properly setting the orbital parameters, it would not be possible to see how sky looks at certain times of year on the planet's surface, which is my actual goal.
Second, I have used collection of stellar data called Hipparcos catalogue, specifically I/311, The New Reduction. This catalogue was chosen, because it is most easily accessible and full list of stars below apparent magnitude 8 I have encountered.
Third, this map is made on supposition that the planet has axial tilt 0 degrees.
Earth's axial tilt comparatively is about 23.4 degrees. My justification for this choice is that this partucular axial tilt for the planet will provide a justification for even and seemingly unchanging climate. Earth's one being so significant means the planet's surface is being heated unevenly at various points of the orbit, which leads to change of seasons.
It seems intuitive (at least, it seemed to me before I looked into it lol) that distance from the Sun got to have more influence on seasons, but since Earth's orbit is almost a circle, the way Earth tilts (away or towards the Sun) is the crucial factor.
With axial tilt being 0, the climate will change depending on the latitude, but seasons will be nonexistent in the way we know them.
It also aligns with my headcanon that SEEDS ships fell on the planet, for the most part, in a relatively narrow stripe along the equator, or close to it - no tilt will explain how the whole inhabited area is just the same warm and dry desert area.
However, this concept, while fun to speculate on, makes it hard to create the map - I had to somehow cover this change, because in my opinion it would be logical to assume that survivors will create their own local celestial coordinate system for their needs, like launching and maintaining satellites, which existence is a big part of main plot in the manga.
So for now I have settled on using earth's equatorial coordinate system, suppose that SEEDS survivors will keep the reference point of vernal equinox (which was likely a mistake, because the existence of that point itself is due to said axial tilt), and then do two linear transformations: transition to a chosen point, and a turn to put the axis vertically. The calculation were done in Python, but I will not share my code - it is undercooked and I'm ashamed htrshtrsth. I will share the file if asked personally though.
I have double checked some of my data through the program called Celestia, which is digital planetarium that lets you create your own space objects and observe them.
The question of location of the binary in space was a bit of a random choice. This number, HIP 500002, is a fictional Hipparcos ID for a potential position for this star.
Tumblr media
In this image you can see where it is on Earth's sky. It is going to be in same area as alpha Centauri (in fact, its the star you can see half-covered by the red marker lol), and justification of it is because this area of space has a lot of bright stars packed relatively close, and thus I expected the sky to look pretty.
Next thing is the distance. This one was tricky to estimate, given how soft sci fi in Trigun is, but I have remembered a panel from vol 4 chapter 1 in Trimax:
Tumblr media
Going from this "nearly a hundred years" and the fact that in this exact chapter the Earth's signal gets back to them, I concluded:
lets suppose that Earth has superior communication capabilities - they have arrived on the scene less than a year after this message was received, and via some sort of warp technology no less, so the response was near instantaneous and at best took a few years on their part.
however, SEEDS ships do not possess similar technology, and they use more familiar to us IRL means, in this case, the fastest known thing in the world - electromagnetic waves. Since 1 light year is exactly the distance that light covers in one year, the estimate will be close to 100 light years.
"nearly" is a bit vague, but lets take a rough midpoint between 95 and 100, 97.0082 LY. 0082 is added for flavor.
So, the coordinates for this fictional star are RA=220.2, DE=-65.56, Dist=97.0082 LY.
I have tried two more positions, one in northern hemisphere close to Vega, alpha Lyrae (with same exact distance as HIP 500002, just different declination and ascention), and a binary that @sponsoredbyadhd pointed me to, delta Trianguli (HIP 10644), also in northern hemisphere. The latter system is ALMOST perfect for the Trigun system, however it is a bit closer to Earth than I thought it should be, around 20-30 light years (however, the delay in Earth's reaction can always be explaned by various political/natural setbacks and decoding issues), and also both of them have quite subdued star maps. However, the 500002 one is really bright with star parameters I've chosen, and with how it is a fictional star system, I'd like it to be as inconspicous as possible lol, which means it gotta have magnitude below 7 - invisible for a human eye.
In conclusion, this is really not... conclusive yet, but I really hope I will eventually get to a point of creating a few maps as they would have been seen by people on the surface, and a mock-up calendar!
I also think it's good enough to try and create some new, Gunsmoke-specific constellations on this map, because even at the distance around 20-30 LY they completely lose shape, and 100 LY is at the edge of stars visible from Earth with naked eye, so yeah.
If you see any peculiar shapes here, or on pics below, let me know! It would be sweet to imagine people just... being people and making stuff up for day to day navigation, and I think SEEDS survivors will be doing just that.
