IPQ, do you have a type?
(Content warning for suicide and mentioning of death)
In the rise of Jazz for Two just finished last week and I only watched it yesterday (replaying Doyoon Juha's locker room scene more than 23 times, I believe), there's something on my mind.
So, as many of us know, Jazz for Two is produced (or co-produced?) by IPQ, the same company that currently managing boy group OMEGA X. And as soon as I entered the first episode, I noticed something.
Isn't this kind of story... familiar?
Remember ASTCO? Remember Taehyun and his tragic past and his hateful aunt? Although the same past didn't happen in Jazz for Two, we're introduced to another heavy past of Taeyi: about his brother's suicide. And it pestered Taeyi a lot that he loses sleep.
WHICH MAKE ME THINKING
...does IPQ have a type in picking up which BL manhwa they want to adapt?
I know it's too soon, there are only two BL dramas so far that IPQ produced, ASTCO and Jazz for Two. But I'm wondering. And I can't help but thinking that it could lead to the direction I'm not willing to imagine right now.
Since I learn about data analytics, I can't help if they did research of well performed manhwa and type of romance that are guaranteed to be popular and found about this type, this "the main character with tragic past and someone else that would be him for his ups and downs" kind of type. I guess it's possible? If I'm not wrong, Netflix's first (?) original series was based on this kind of research (what the users enjoyed the most in Netflix).
I don't really want IPQ to actually only adapt or make story with this kind of vibes because, let's be honest, it's hard to convey it to the audience. It required a good writing skills, especially in a tightly budgeted production. Even a production as good as Jazz for Two with 30-40 minutes airing time somehow still fail to fulfill the watcher's desire for good story.
Even The Eight Sense needed 10 episodes of 30ish minutes airing time to make such a good angsty drama with satisfactory story.
If in the future they decided to adapt the same kind of manhwa or even made it themselves, I hope they would find a better writer since the one they worked with in these two dramas failed to deliver the maximum.
Also, IPQ, please just know that sometimes we're OK if the main characters simply has family matters that doesn't include anyone dying, or if the main characters are high schoolers with no concern other than their grades, their friends, and their one sided crush. Or simply give us a college student who simply wants to graduate like Jang Jaeyoung, or a high schooler with people pleasing tendency like Shin Daon. We're down with complex character without the heavy emotional baggage so please... if you want to go down this route, please do it right. Please hire a better writer.
Although "we" in this case could be just me.

Writing Romance Tropes: Opposites Attract
Description: A pairing made up of two completely different people that embrace their differences and fall in love.
Ideas:
Disliking each other as a default because of social status/a certain event that separates them.
Person B doing things that inadvertently hurt person A and regretting it as they get closer.
An inciting event that shows a similarity between them, even if it's small, and allows for a significant change.
Person A's friend group trying to protect them from person B.
They become friends anyway, which shocks everyone to their core.
Bickering but everyone sees it as flirting.
Talking about each other to their friends. Person A trying to convince their friend group that person B is a good person. Person B telling his friends how cool person A is despite them being completely different from their friend group.
Balancing each other out and doing things to make each other better.
Person B pretending to be all cool and confident but melts every time person A smiles
Person A never thinking they have a chance and is oblivious to how much person B loved them
They assume things about the other person that turn out to be completely wrong as they slowly get to know each other.
An argument that leads to a confession or a soft moment.
"I never wanted to hurt you, this is just a big misunderstanding and I'm sorry." "You never apologize." "Well this is important, so I am now."
Over time they acquire traits of each other's personalities
Casual displays of affection
Secret Heart eyes heart eyes heart eyes
Both being too stubborn to admit their feelings
When they finally do it's shocking at first for both of them but they soon realize how obvious it was
Gushing about how much they liked each other and didn't want to admit it
"Every time you looked at me I wanted to cry you were so cute!" "I thought you were glaring at me when I caught you looking?" "I got scared when you noticed so I decided to look mean instead!"
"You're so frustrating! Why am I even friends with you?" "Because you love me." "Yeah? So what! Wait- I didn't mean that-" "Yes you did." "FINE yes I did." "For the record, I love you too."
Both having a special place or object that they associate with each other (maybe the first place they connected, or an object that they bonded over).
Going on adventures together and helping each other grow even after they get together.
Tips:
Make the differences very significant. I'll list a few examples here.
^difference in social class/economic class
^mean manly jock/shy sensitive nerd (but be careful with this! It can be cliche so make sure to put your own twist on it! My example ship does a great job of this)
^Uptight/easy going
^impulsive, hyperactive / cautious, rational
^ordinary person / someone extraordinary (a hero, maybe)
^very serious, hardworking / always making jokes (alternatively, all work / all play)
Make sure their relationship isn't automatically perfect. They're very different people, so there should be some bumps to overcome.
Give them some arguments! They're not going to agree on everything, so even if they care about each other they're going to fight. Let those fights be raw and emotional and significant.
A fight should be something they both care deeply or feel very strong about, not just a small difference between them. (Ex: a difference in values, or a big communication error)
Take your time with this one, allow their relationship to gradually change from annoyed at each other to friends to liking each other to romance.
Example of this trope:
Tyrus (TJxCyrus, Andi Mack): This pairing starts out as destined enemies in the beginning of season two, with TJ being the scary basketball jock that bullies shy eccentric nerd Cyrus' best friend Buffy. But the two quickly connect as Cyrus brings down TJ's walls and make him want to be a better person and TJ pushes Cyrus out of his very small comfort zone. They turn into best friends and after the manipulative girl Kira is out of the picture, they confess their feelings and get together in the last episode of the show.
"Is there anything else you want to tell me?" ~Cyrus
"Yeah... Is there anything you wanna tell me?" ~TJ
"Yes." ~Cyrus.
The couple hold hands and give each other a relieved laugh.
(Disclaimer: some of these may be non canon romances but all have heavy subtext or a form of confirmation by the author/creators)
Tumblr media
This is part two of my romantic tropes series. Remember, this is all advice and ideas, not rules. Build off of them and come up with your own great story :)❤

i think i said it somewhere that i kind of want to see music related bl dramas to see if i liked their soundtrack because so far, i'm liking most of the soundtracks, like sing my crush, wish you, and happy merry ending.
i got the chance to continue watching my school president and i can say confidently that my theory is true. although probably not all, but i love the majority of soundtracks for msp. especially gemini's hook??? it's chef's kiss!

k-bl dramas need to put out their bgm ost album like semantic error and all the liquors. i'm always excited to figuring out which scenes the songs appear
especially you, a shoulder to cry on, i'm genuinely curious about all 3 bgm you used in the drama.

So I was watching Bon Appetit, right...
It was a pretty pleasant watch. It got a bit longer running time at around 25-30 minutes each episodes so we could see some other characters that is not a mere additional. I love Sangwoo except for the fact he's trying to do something without consent that was fortunately got caught by Yoonsoo. Kind of surprised because Seobin made a cameo too. The drama suits my vibes. Mature, not really steamy, the story is pretty good too.
But then the miscommunication happen. The one after the seemingly-a-restaurant-owner ex. The one where Dohoon said hurtful things about Yoonsoo's pettiness and jealousy in his eyes. Seriously when the scenes changed to Yoonsoo's room, I was served a scene of him packing. And of course my brain immediately went, "This guy is going to JEJU after an argument? Seriously?" and I was pissed.
But turned out it was for him to clear his mind, thinking about the recipe in his restaurant, thinking of his restaurant name. Great.
Still didn't get it why he didn't want to sit down for a while with Dohoon before going to Jeju and expressed everything he's upset for and just reconcile without giving Dohoon a heartbreak thinking Yoonsoo was going to go forever and left him after Dohoon realized his own feeling (in which he did, tho, but it took a running Dohoon and his air fryer in his arms for him to pursue a conversation with Dohoon). Maybe I'm dumb. Maybe I need a rewatch. I don't know.
If you can enlightened me about this situation so I could relate to Yoonsoo and support him, please do so. I'm at dark.

the only thing i want to ask to the production team/writers of happy merry ending is why did you guys make seungjun's roommate falling for seungjun? it doesn't really serve any purpose to the story as far as i see it. it added drama, a little bit, but it's never even followed up later.
a breeze of love is also has this kind of character but thank GOD there's a potential new love story about him so that the history of him crushing on dohyun can be developed even further.

sexiest thing a boy can do is put his head to the arrow he’s being threatened with and say, with the biggest smirk on his face, “okay shoot me then”

ok someone probably has thought of this somewhere but i think the act of giving the lemon candy was actually a really important. if i remember everything correctly, taehyun and dayeol's relationship started to shift in a more friendly way with less prank after this scene.
and then in the upcoming episode, we saw that taehyun's step mother gave taehyun the exact same lemon candy to him when she asked if taehyun would go home with her and her husband because he was adopted by them.
the lemon candy could be sort of a sign of the change of relationship. for taehyun and his late step mom, it was when their status changed from stranger to mother and son. for taehyun and dayeol, it was when their status changed from kind of enemies to friends (even though dayeol said he still very much hate taehyun in a later scene, but they're definitely in a better relationship).

if i had a nickel for every time a member of the man blk starred in a bl, i would have 5 nickels. which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened five times. six if you count just being in a bl. seven if you count a cameo in another bl besides the one he starred in.

so the actor who portrayed ban dongwook in a breeze of love is ANOTHER member of the man blk. and so it's safe to say that half of the group had played in bl drama, where the four of them portrayed gay characters.
adding this just in case:
choe chanyi - shin daon (light on me), second lead, woo taekyung's love interest
go woojin - namgoon shiwoon (light on me), but he doesn't have same sex love interest
eom se-ung - yeong woo (behind cut), main character
cheon seungho - jin won (mr. heart), main character, also appeared as cameo in where your eyes linger
shin jeongyu - ban dongwook (a breeze of love), main character
and soon to come
yoon junwon - seonghoon (eccentric romance), main character

i was wondering. i watched a shoulder to cry on and on the scene where taehyun got rest after piggybacking dayeol and confessed (is it confession, tho? anyway), in the video i watched, it said
"If there's someone who likes me, I hope it's you."
which i don't really mind at first. like, it means taehyun feels like only dayeol can understand him, right? that's reasonable. i can understand. and taehyun stated so too in the drama.
however, the original quote actually is "내가 좋아할 수 있는 사람이 너였으면 좋겠어" that if translated pretty literally means
"If there's someone I could love, I hope it's you."
which makes everything imo a lot better.
cause we all know that taehyun didn't even know how to love someone (he literally said it in a scene with his stepdad and step aunt). taehyun never know how it was to like someone. and he then said to dayeol that if he were to make an effort to like someone, to learn how to love someone, it would be for dayeol. and learning to love someone as someone with trauma and never really felt love around him, it's a huge deal, and he's gonna go for it for dayeol.
a shoulder to cry on is really the story of how dayeol who fell first to how taehyun fell harder.

so, i FINALLY watched a shoulder to cry on?
and it's not really as bad as i thought? not something i expect from a drama rated 7.7 in mdl? and i kinda enjoy them (except the prank and... can i say bullying??). it's definitely a huge advantages to have two members of the same boy group, they have bonded for some time before the shooting anyway so their chemistry isn't forced at all. acting wise still needs improvement, yes, but tbh SHIN YECHAN YOU DID A GOOD JOB???? like if he received more acting class before he was casted it would've been FABULOUS.
and i feel like it's that kind of drama where i feel okay without that many intimate skinship (since apparently i have a bit of issue in one drama where it showed so little skinship before).
also TAEHYUN'S MONOLOGUE IS LEGIT MAKING ME CRY?????? HELLO??????
but i was also the person who cries when yechan from love tractor thought he didn't know seonyul that well and cried so i can't really say anything.

Day 21: Show(s) That Make You Cry
I don't remember ever crying over a BL drama. Or weep. Or sobbing.
I probably have done it watching To My Star 2 (I mean I 100% testified that the whole show sole purpose is to make us cry), or Bad Buddy when they were about to run away from home or when they went back to their respective home "broke up". But it's not vivid, and I can't recall exactly. I've also made a tweet about crying when Taekyung said "If I'm not that courageous, I wouldn't be hurt" or something about that line. Still, I don't remember.
HOWEVER I remember that I let a tear drops while watching Love Tractor.
THAT Love Tractor. THAT drama with cute country boy and collected city boy.
Spoiler alert, there's a scene where Yechan picked up a melodica he bought for Seonyul and was tossed by Inseo, Seonyul's ex. Then he cried, saying to himself that he's nobody and I remember hugging my laptop and a tear dropped.
Tumblr media
I guess it shows how Yoon Dojin served range. He can be the puppy that only wants to give his beloved haem lots of love, but he can also be mellow and cried because he thought he's no one. Especially compared to the ex.
If that scene has made me dropped a tear, the dramas mentioned above also should've witnessed me crying, logically. I probably forget about it.

Day 18: Trope(s) You Dislike
Love triangle would be one of them. I've seen a lot of bad love triangle on fanfic and general fic that I don't want to watch anything about it in my BL show.
Or when there's the ex who's coming back or someone who likes one of the main characters. Don't really hate it, but it kind of irks me. I remember I dropped my rating (by a bit) for 2gether because of that particular woman in the last few episodes.
Eunji in The Eighth Sense is also ticked me in the wrong way, but gladly she got the karma she deserved.
Sohee in Light on Me is irking me but I'm glad she went through things with Daon and she eventually apologized to Taekyung, I believe?
Love Tractor has the same trope, but then I can tolerate it (even though he made my Yechan CRY) after looking at his and Seonyul's conversation.

Day 17: Show That Let You Down
There are quiet a lot, other than the show I mentioned on prior days in this challenge.
I remember feeling a little bit disappointed in Kimi no Koto Dake Miteitai, but solely because I expected more drama and conflict but it's just... so fluff, so minimal conflict. I'm so not used to it.
Kissable Lips is also kinda disappointing but because it can be BETTER if they had more episode and more running time.
