i shouldve known i was butch when…
i went shopping for a prom dress in my senior year of high school and burst into tears because i felt like i was pretending to be something i wasn’t. it felt as if i was shopping for a mask, or a drag costume.
i often thought “i’d treat her better” when seeing straight couples.
i watched the barbie movie in a full cowboy outfit and held the door for every single woman leaving the theater because it was all i knew to do in that moment. the movie cemented for me that i will never, ever be a feminine woman. i am an inherently masculine person, and the ways in which i want to interact with femininity and womanhood are reverent - an outsider, but a lover and protector
i always envied male characters and identified with them.
my femme girlfriend at the time called me her handsome boy and i about died.
i had Intense Feelings about every single one of my childhood best friend’s boyfriends, having to hold myself back from embarrassing her by giving each of them the whole “if you hurt her i’ll beat you up” talk. lol.
my suspenders phase. my backwards hat phase.
being WAY too excited to help my other childhood friend lift her garage door every day after school
these are some ways i’ve experienced butchness!! this is def not a “if you do this you’re butch” list, or a “you’re not butch if you don’t do this” list. a lot of these experiences overlap with my transmasc identity as well!! i find that they’re very closely intertwined.
