fern didn't get more than a word in before his brother broke down. what happened? why, even? he never cries. neither of them do.
as he goes to hold finn, as though helping him up from a grave wound, the possibilities flicker through his mind.
"hey—hey...!" he tries to sound comforting. it only half works. from the grimace on his face, it's clear he knows it, too. fern pats and hugs, dread twisting a little knot that keeps growing the longer things pan out. "c'mon, man... talk to me. what did you in? who do i gotta beat up?"
☄️ Nope, he can't hold it in anymore. First birthday without...
He's absolutely lost it. As much as he's tried to distance himself from the pain after all this time, every ounce of grief and heartbreak came flooding back in an instant. 🦋

usually, being 'away' means something terrible happened. even without the foggy memories from his time as finn, he can say confidently this fact is true of both sides.
with a hup, fern drops to face finn properly, be on his level.
for a moment he stares, wringing the ble volume with soft care as with any relics of childhood.
"...so what did it this time?" he's almost as quiet as finn when he asks.
☄️ "Um..." A 'thanks' didn't even feel like the right response. Was he glad to be back? It was hard to say. Familiar things were comforting, but painful at the same time - painful because there was something obvious missing, making even the familiar seem alien.
How did he even respond to this? Forming any sort of coherent conversation felt like pulling teeth. It was part of the reason he'd disappeared for so long.
"I needed to be... away," he says quietly. 🦋

The Last Of Us: israeli politics in The Last Of Us Part 2; Neil Druckmann openly supports israel
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Rick Riordan, the author of the books has made zionist comments neutral to Israel and the genocide
The Umbrella Academy: Aidan Gallagher openly supported Israel on instagram with a post "I stand with Israel", post is now deleted
Deadpool 3: Shawn Levy, the director of the movie is a zionist
Dune 2: Timothee Chalamet made a joke on SNL about the genocide in Palestine
Any Disney movies and shows including Inside Out 2, PJO, The Eras Tour movie, Moana 2, Marvel content: Disney is funding Israel, it has been announced that a new Israeli superhero will be joining the MCU
