New chapter of As The Valkyries Sing Their Song is up. Yes it’s not Friday, and yes I’ve been behind, but as part of a nannowrimo challenge I got the story finished last month.

So, I’ve been busing working to finish up As the Valkyries Sing Their Song as part of this challenge. And yes, I have made it to the end. My reward, this lovely mood board, I’m so happy about. 

But also for anyone following the story on A03 it may appear to disappear for the bit. The plan is to submit it to the collection on December 2nd, and then the whole collection will be published on December 5th. So there should be lots of other wonderful Sylki stories showing up that day.

The ultimate power move in a vampire/fairy rivalry would be the fairy inviting the vampire over for tea. The vampire has natural dominion over anyone who invites them into their home, the fairy has natural dominion over anyone who violates the laws of hospitality, and neither can refuse the appointment without showing weakness, so it’d just be a constant headgame of the vampire trying to manoueuvre the fairy into a position where the obligations of hospitality allow the vampire to eat them, and the fairy trying to trick the vampire into doing something that would allow the fairy to declare them a poor guest.

So out of no where I had this random thought. Loki (the TV show) is a lot like the Terry Gilliam movie Brazil (one of my favorite all time movies by the way). The dystopian tyrannical bureaucracy, the guy who daydreams of greatness chasing after the terrorist girl next door. I mean okay there’s lots of differences, nothing in Loki was as terrifying as the evil air conditioning repairmen... the weirdness like this... 

(yes it is a movie were the hero is an office worker, even thought it doesn’t look like it).

But anyway, it got me thinking of something odd that’s either changed in me, or maybe Hollywood. There are a few very different versions of the movie, the Director’s Cut and the Love Conquerors All version. Gilliam annoyed that Universal hadn’t released his film, held a private screening for several movie critics, who voted it the best movie of 1985. But then when the studio released it, they did their own edit, changed the ending, and it was not well liked. As you might guess the Director’s Cut is quite as happy an ending as the other versions, and that’s the version I love despite the fact that well, love sort of conquerors all, but not really because the world is too messed up for that.

But these days I just wish Hollywood would allow characters to be happy and not always kill off one version of a couple. Again I don’t know if this is in a change in me, or in media these days. I used to love tragic endings, but it feels like everything is a tragic ending now, so I’d like to someone to brave enough to let people be happy.

Which is maybe why I’m okay with the end of Loki. Sure it’s not a perfect happy ending, but it leaves room for one in the future. It lets the characters be complicated and angry, and things can get better. I just hope it doesn’t go the way of one of them (statistically it would be Loki) dying to make a tragic love story.
