I think with something like that, you can do whatever works best for the story. It's like the "rule of funny" (going with whatever would be funniest in the moment even if it contradicts some previously established rule - which is something the Muppets do a lot of the time). There have been productions I don't necessarily consider canon, like Muppets Haunted Mansion, but I've used them as canon in a fic just because it had more emotional weight for the characters that way. And I've treated Treasure Island and Christmas Carol as historical AUs, just cause that was the story I wanted to tell. There aren't really any hard and fast rules, and no wrong way to do it!
I'm curious
So to those of you who write stories or create characters in the Muppets universe, do you consider any Muppet Movies/series cannon events, or productions the muppets produced in universe??
Muppets Mayhem I like to consider as cannon events, but things like the 2015 series I think qualify as both (since they break up the episodes of that series with one on one interviews with the characters)
However, aside from the original Muppet Movie, I don't think I've ever asked myself if I consider any of the movies as cannon things that happened, or movies the muppets made in universe.
Asking because Walter is mentioned in parts of Hired Sparky, and I don't know if I should treat the movie he appeared in as something cannon that happened to the Muppets, or something Walter was hired to act in

Hiiii! Do you have anything you can share so far about He's a Keeper? I can't wait for the next chapter ❤️❤️❤️
🥺🥺 Aww thank you so much!! Hearing that really does motivate me to keep at it!
Hmm well I'll talk a bit about the fic as a whole! I'm not sure how much of this is coming through in the fic so far, but as I'm writing, I think a lot about this post I made back in August, and the idea of the Shack being home for Zoot. And I think about the importance of home and the importance of memory, and how those are two things that Zoot never really got to have. So that's kinda always in the back of my mind, and something I'll get into some more with later chapters. (rn I'm 2900 words into chapter 3! But it's also a hot mess that will probably need a lot of reworking so 😅)
And for something less heavy… fun fact, I actually bought a bag of Funyuns while I was writing that last scene, so I could make sure they came in small enough sizes to be ring size. ✨Research✨!
Thank you for the ask, I really appreciate it!!

⭐I don't have any stories in mind in particular, but I would like to hear your thoughts about anything you have written that you would like to share!
Ooo thank you anon!! So much to choose from… but since chapter 2 of He's a Keeper is fresh in my mind, and I'm actually pretty happy with how the Lips/Floyd/Zoot scene came out, I'll take a moment to ramble about a paragraph from that:
But that was just how they were, like night and day. Lips kept his trumpet pristine with an elaborate cleaning ritual, and Zoot left his saxophone covered in fingerprints and smudges, insisting that the patina made it sound better. They both had the same love for their instruments, but showed it in completely different ways.
This is a hc I've had for a while, them taking care of their instruments in opposite ways (one of those hcs that's sorta-canon? We know Zoot never changes his reed or cleans his spit valve, and I think some merch and promo things have talked about Lips keeping his trumpet clean. But I took both those things and ran with them cause I'm all about the opposites-attract with this ship.)
But as I was writing this, it hit me that the way they express their love for their instruments really represents how they express love in general. Lips wants to take care of his trumpet and doesn't want anything bad to happen to it. Much like how he fears anything bad happening to his loved ones, and how he's had past jobs in caretaking roles. Whereas Zoot has to have a tangible reminder of love - those smudges on his sax serve the same function as a photograph. It's like the Garfield "to be loved is to be changed" meme, it's physical proof that you loved something or someone.
I didn't get into all this in that scene because it's Lips' POV and I don't think this is even something he'd really be aware of or have been thinking about at the time, but it occurred to me as I was writing it and I just really liked the thought of it. Yay ✨symbolism✨!

Fanfic Writers: Director’s Cut
Reblog this if you want readers to come into your ask box and ask for the “director’s commentary” on a particular story, section of a story, or set of lines.
Or, send in a ⭐star⭐  to have the author select a section they’ve been dying to talk about!

Based on a Richard Hunt quote about Bunsen and Beaker’s relationship, “Beaker is a character very few people understood. They all just said, 'Oh, he's so stupid.' No, Beaker wasn't stupid at all. Here's this very kindly old professor who's always doing these things that never quite work, he's not really quite in this world, and Beaker grew an affection for him, and a dedication. He would do anything for this guy. He was there not because he was stupid, but because he cared about him." ❤️

When working on a big multi-chapter fic, it's always wise to have something else on the side that's weird and Just For You where you don't even have a plot yet but the vibes are good

No you're so right, I've thought of this too!! Peter Linz did say in one of the backstage pass podcasts that Alice Dinnean came up with calling him a chrysanthemum based on classic literature, so it does sound like there's some symbolism going on there too. Though he never said where exactly it came from (I tried looking, and I did find this poem - "The Last Chrysanthemum" by Thomas Hardy - which felt very Lips to me. Especially with the chrysanthemum blooming late, and Lips coming later to the rest of the band and having his personality developed later.) But yeah I definitely think there's more to him being called a chrysanthemum than just how he looks, and the death symbolism is way too fitting.
BROS I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING. So you know how Lips got called a “chrysanthemum” in Track 7: Eight Days a Week right? And you know how Lips immediately assumed Animal was dead when he was missing and how he also assumed Nora was dead and when the band got together just to find her again he was literally ready for a funeral. I just remembered that chrysanthemums are a symbol of death and when I remembered that I just realized that Lips being called a “chrysanthemum” makes even more sense about how he assumes anyone who is gone or literally just does something is immediately dead/dying. Some of you dudes probably already thought about this but I just wanted to talk about this.
Also I know he was just called that because of how he looks like one but I think this is better instead
