An analysis on Hikaru’s view of love
I feel like this is one of the most complicated things to talk about when it comes to this manga. There are several views regarding this and I truly believe that it all comes down to perspective and I don’t believe in any kind of way that my view is or should be the universal one. I just wanted to make this for fun
When it comes to “Hikaru” and his view of love I’ve saw some people interpret it as asexuality and aromanticism but I personally see it differently.
It’s not that “Hikaru” can’t love , he’s just unable to understand the kind of love human feel for each other since , fundamentally speaking , he’s not human at all.
And this is not something that only comes down to love , but also to family and friends.
He seems to lack the empathy that characterizes humanity. He doesn’t understand the concept of life since he never had it , and still to this day he doesn’t really feel bad for almost killing asako because he doesn’t understand the value life has for humans. Because it’s an otherworldly concept to him , you don’t really die , your soul just changes shapes. That’s all it is to him. And the same goes for love , the way he views this feeling will always be warped by his own nature as a monster/god.
Especially in the first chapters you can see how “Hikaru” doesn’t even view Yoshiki as his own person , but rather as something he possessed and that he had ownership over. He considered Yoshiki rightfully his since he took over the real Hikaru , thus making him also expect to fill the same role the real Hikaru had in his life.
You can see that also in chapter 3 , when he tells Yoshiki that he’s the only one that should be sticking to him , that he shouldn’t look at anything else apart from him.
Also in one of the few special chapters , where a girl ends up confessing to “Hikaru” , Yoshiki ends up feeling extremely hurt over one of his comments because it only keeps showing his lack of empathy and understanding when it comes down to human relationships. “Hikaru” wonders if that girl confessing to him was almost like the bird in the video they ended up watching and Yoshiki then tells him off , wondering if then “Hikaru” also saw him as some kind of pet he just had around for fun.
But even tho “Hikaru” can’t understand love the same way humans do , he still craves for it desperately. Much like Yoshiki’s dad tells us that when you’re lonely and hungry for love you end up craving it even more , that’s what “Hikaru” has been doing all this time. And even tho I truly believe that he’s trying to change , and that he really does care for Yoshiki and his well-being , he’s like a starving animal. Because his monstrosity will always come first compared to his pseudo humanity. He’s like a starving dog. When you tell a dog to not eat after putting a piece of meat close to him , he’ll be able to resist for at least a week until his hunger will take over.
The same can be said for “Hikaru” , who’s instincts to take and consume always take over when he’s close to Yoshiki. He has been able to hold them back all this time because he felt like he had something much more important , aka Yoshiki himself , but he can’t keep resisting for much longer and he knows this.
Because at the end of the day that’s the only way “Hikaru” knows how to love

So uhm since people are talking about my tiktok I’m actually kinda upset about two things :
1-them saying that I’m accusing mokmoklen of queerbaiting when I’ve literally put a GIANT red disclaimer saying that I am in no way accusing the author since the story it’s still ongoing and I was just going to make a rundown of what the author has done recently that has made many upset with the recent chapter
2-that after reading my 30 slides all they’ve got was me saying that the queerbaiting is because Yoshiki’s ancestor is a woman WHICH IS NOT THE CASE AT ALL.
What has actually upset many , me included with hikarugashindaupdates as well who’s a dear friend of mine , is how mokmoklen has been backtracking from the original idea of the story and is now trying to erase all the subtext and implications of their feelings for one another.
When the story first started it was advertised as BL and horror , and the kind of dynamic she wanted to develop for Yoshiki and Hikaru was way different compared to what we got now (I talked about this in detail in my video so if you wanna know more look it up).
Around the beginning of volume 3 a shift happened. It first started with mokmoklen deciding to remove the BL tag , which tbh at that time still didn’t seem like that big of a deal. Especially to me , I’ve always felt like the story didn’t need to specifically be categorized as BL for Yoshiki and Hikaru’s feelings to shine through.
But then she started to make clear how “Hikaru” CANT whatsoever feel or understand human love.
Now this is where the first problems start , because in the first volumes you can clearly see that THIS is not the case AT ALL.
And it’s not proven only by his overall behavior in the story , but also from the art she used to post.
To be fair I wouldn’t even been mad about Yoshiki’s ancestor being a woman if you told me in volume 1 , because to me it was clear that Yoshiki and Hikaru loved each other.
And fundamentally speaking , since the story is still ongoing , I know that Yoshiki’s ancestor being a woman doesn’t really take anything from the possibility of Yoshiki and “Hikaru” still ending up together. But what truly upsets me about this it’s the intentions and the meaning behind this choice.
Plus the fact that mokmoklen made it clear that now Yoshiki doesn’t feel anything for “Hikaru”. It also worries me how she still hasn’t made Yoshiki open up about his feelings for the real Hikaru either. It’s as if what was so clear to us in the first volume is now being precluded to us for whatever reason.
Hikaru and Yoshiki’s love for each other and their homosexuality is one of the main points that makes them who their are and why they act in certain ways. Their struggles to accept their orientations in a closeted and homophobic village are what makes them such layered and complex characters.
And I literally concluded by saying that I do NOT believe that if this ever turns out to be queerbaiting she ever intended for any of this to happen since the beginning. Something is going on in her life because she has delated most of her BL works on her private accounts

I was right about this but it still feel like such a loss , wdym Yoshiki’s ancestor is a woman ………………….
SPOILERS FOR CHAPTER 23.2 AHEAD
now that we have more informations this kinda changes the context to a lot more things.
I’m starting to wonder if the villagers actually had some kind of religious ritual and believed in sacrifices ? Because Yoshiki states that people started to cut their heads because of their belief but of course it’s not like everyone did it every other day of the week 😭😭. So would it be possible for them to believe in sacrificial rites and what not?
What if Yoshiki’s ancestor was the new sacrificial lamb this time around and the taboo Hikaru’s ancestor committed was asking for the dead to be brought to life again? Not only he would’ve gone against the beliefs of the village , breaking a taboo for them in some sort of way, but he would’ve also broken a taboo on a fundamental level , about the whole cycle of death and rebirth that we know mokmoklen has been trying to hint something at.
Because yes the taboo could’ve also been “the two of them were gay so they cut off his head” , but this doesn’t personally hold up because then why didn’t they decapitate Hikaru’s ancestor as well? Why only Yoshiki’s if they both were men in a happy relationship?
And I personally believe that the price someone would have to pay ,if they did , in fact , bring someone back to life , would actually be much more long lasting and hard to repay compared to being in love with a man.
Like Hikaru’s ancestor committed a taboo so severe that people of their village have been forced to pay the price of as well for at least ALMOST 400 years. Like that’s crazy
Also pls CAN SOMEONE GIVE US SOME DAMN CONTEXT ON YOSHIKI’S FUCKASS DAD CAUSE WE DON’T EVEN KNOW A DAMN THING ABOUT THE KIND OF PROFESSION HE DOES AND IF HE MIGHT BE CONNECTED TO THE CHURCH OR SOMETHING ARGHHHHH

I think that the fact that Yoshiki ended volume 2 with such a positive and determined look on his face being like “Yeah I will just teach him how to live among humans” to his mental plummeting in vol 3 shows how Yoshiki finally woke up from his delusions and realized that what they have is not going to work.
“Hikaru” fundamentally isn’t human , as much as he pretends to be he can’t truly understand what humanity is and he never will , it was an honest mistake on Yoshiki’s part believing that something good could’ve actually come out of this , and that’s because at that moment he was still grieving Hikaru’s death and found it difficult to differentiate who Hikaru and “Hikaru” were as individuals.
Its only around chapter 21 that he finally accepts Hikaru’s death and is outlook on the situation totally changes.
Whether it’s a change for the worst or the better it’s still up to debate and something we’ll have to see by how the story progresses , but at least now Yoshiki realized that he can’t expect change from someone when him as well can’t bring himself to see “Hikaru” as the real one. It’s something impossible and he finally accepts that.

i was looking for 'hikaru's 'idk :(' moments in hgsn and i realized its rarely there besides kinda the above pages until vol 4. i really think yoshiki ended this arc in vol 2 with "i'll have to teach him." and then proceeded to not really teach him anything or even question hikaru again, lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
by volume 3, yoshiki's stabbing hikaru bc he's given up after hikaru fucking up again😭 the events between "i'll have to teach him" and "let's look into it", yoshiki really just hangs out with hikaru (but now knowing he isnt the original hikaru) and assumes accepting him as a friend and letting him take out a hostile ghost or two solves the initial problem of hikaru not entirely having the same perspective of humans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
only hikaru putting an effort in to stabilize yoshiki's mental state in return for earlier gets yoshiki back to actually trying to think about the problem with hikaru's support
i know people are joking he's also currently avoiding thinking abt other events going on (dead guy on news, the fate of the old guy) and i think thats similar, lol. yoshiki's not fully able to handle it all with just him and hikaru. he goes from "i'll have to teach him" after laughing off smth hikaru did that he didnt like to "lets look into it" after establishing boundaries. i think he's definitely developing in that regard, and maybe more if other characters aid them..?

YESSS YOU GET IT , I COULD TALK ABOUT HOW HIKARU WASN’T ACTUALLY SUCH A GOOD PERSON EITHER BUT AT THE SAME TIME HE WAS ALSO JUST A KID WHO SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN BURDENED WITH ALL OF THAT UGHHHHH
It always blows my mind how mokmoklen is able to make us mourn for a character we will never know.
Hikaru is presented as this guy who brings happiness to others. He was popular among classmates and girls , he was selfless and caring , he took care of Yoshiki when his parents fought and even in his final moments he thought about Yoshiki’s happiness instead of his own salvation.
But he was also a liar , he sometimes manipulated others to get his way out of things , and this makes you realize just how much we don’t know of the real Hikaru and how it’s actually okay if it stays like that.
We will never know him apart from Yoshiki’s idolized version of him , or from how “Hikaru” decides to portray the individual that he now occupies the body of.
Even the higher ups in the village were more preoccupied about the ritual getting carried out than actually wondering what might’ve happened to the Hikaru that they presume is still alive.
It’s as if Hikaru has been objectified to a point by the people in the story that what we end up knowing is the perception others have of him , rather than him as an individual and I feel like this makes this sense of longing and grief deepen to an even greater extent
PS: it makes it even sadder to me because it solidifies this idea that he truly was just an ends to a mean. As soon as he was born his duty was to carry out the ritual , it actually didn’t matter what he thought about it and people cares even less about that.

I think nobody pointed it out yet but in yesterday’s chapter we can see that “Hikaru” was reading some interesting books. Two of them were “the little mermaid” and “Frankenstein”
Now of course we all know that in the little mermaid , she wishes to become a human to be with the man she loves. In the Disney version she is able to live the rest of her life happily ever after WHILE in the original tale the little mermaid ends up turning into sea foam because her love isn’t corresponded.
I know you guys could say “but wait , how do we know we should take into consideration the original version of the tale?” And the answers is because of the second story.
Frankenstein seems to perfectly parallel what’s been going on in the story so far and let me tell you , that is not good.
In the story a doctor is able to sew together parts of dead bodies to bring it back to life, much like the great brainsnatcher was able to put back Hikaru’s body after his fatal fall and bring it back to life.
The monster is actually a very gentle creature , much like “Hikaru” seems to see the world with childlike wonder and innocence , but at the same time both of them get shunned away for different reason.
The monster doesn’t understand that it’s appearance is frightful to humans , and once it tries to mix in with them they run away terrified. While with “Hikaru” he’s unable to understand the concept of human life and this doing actions that scare others (Yoshiki) even tho his intentions are somehow good (to carry out Hikaru’s dying wish of protecting Yoshiki and making him happy in his place)
The problem is that the monster from the original story , with no love left for humanity , asks to his creator one last wish before completely departing to live in solitude (much like “Hikaru” keeps talking about how he should go back to the mountain). He asks for the doctor to make him a female counterpart , a lover , to share his life with. And doesn’t that sound just like what both Yoshiki and “Hikaru” have been saying? With “Hikaru” purposely reminding the viewer that even if he doesn’t express it , Yoshiki is his. He belongs to him , and as long as he doesn’t have to give up this borrowed humanity of his then he won’t have to bring him back to the mountain with him.
While Yoshiki is ready to give up his everything if it means that “Hikaru” can find a place to live as he pleases.
We could also add in the fact that in the manga it’s been said many times that Yoshiki is mixed with “Hikaru”, starting to become the same as him.
In the story the monster’s counterpart gets killed by the doctor himself , thus making the monster decide to seek revenge by hunting its creator. The story ends with the monster killing it’s creator and then committing suicide.
Let me know what you think cuties 😘

Whatever goes down next chapter Yoshiki is probably going to feel bad about it and take all the blame once again and this actually breaks my heart, because essentially he was the one that hold onto “Hikaru’s” other half and he was also the one that brought him to do this by his crazy attempt at killing him. So yea Yoshiki is probably going to be overridden by grief and he will blame himself as always for things that are actually out of his control.
It’s also a very bad situation from “Hikaru’s” perspective as well because yes , he is most probably going to hurt Yoshiki, but at the same time he’s completely out of his mind right now and he can’t be completely blamed. He’s completely working on instincts :(
He’s like a starving animal that can’t control himself anymore
I would also like to add the fact that even tho I do too love “hikaru” very much , at the same time I’m aware that he is in fact dangerous. So of everything went down I would literally try to run for my life in any way. While the first thing Yoshiki does is get all worried and check if he’s hurting LIKE UGHHHHH I HATE THEM (pos)

I know that we all make fun of Hikaru’s death because he IS a fuckass loser but at the same time I can’t help but wonder if it was the work of some kind of spirit at the same time.
It’s too big of a coincidence to me how when he died he was lucky enough to encounter the brain snatcher , plus we know that the brain snatcher kept malevolent spirits away so what if it was actually around there to send away the spirit that caused Hikaru’s death and then everything went down as we know?

silly drawing idea if you want to use it you don’t have to:
Yoshiki and/or “Hikaru” with cute hair clips  (Like sanrio or harajuku style)

Love ya ∩^ω^∩
OMGGGG I LOVE THISSS SHUT UP.
I can totally see kaoru forcing Yoshiki into this , and it’s even cuter considering that Yoshiki canonically lets her play with his hair.
I feel like Yoshiki would die of embarrassment but he’d pull through for his sister
“Hikaru” would look kinda weird with them since he has more of a boyish charm to him , BUT he’s canonically good looking so he’d make it work somehow 🤧
