~+~
A quick self-confidence boost and reminder that I drew when I was feeling scared with starting my own webcomic…
But I had to remind myself that the only way for me to get better…
Is to keep trying.
Here’s hoping that you fellow artists don’t give up either; you can do it friend. I know you can.

Lighting is often underestimated in illustration – a lot of illustrators and beginning artists look at it as a decorative element, or as purely a tool used to showcase the form. A lot of beginning artists are afraid of shading and of using harsh lights. But even with the lighting mastered, even with perfect rendering and good understanding of form in space an integral element of the light remains missing in their pieces.
Look at the samples above: the same character’s head has been used in every thumbnail, and the only thing I have tweaked was the cropping and manner of light used on the features. Every single one of these frames tells a different story and gives off a different vibe simply by using light to focus on the features I want you to focus on.
Read how lighting can be used to enhance character, mood, and interaction within your pictures below the cut.

Okay, so you know how a while back ago, tumblr had these posts showing gorgeous sparkly liqueurs (Viniq) that tasted like grape candy and mistakes and then I stupidly drank the red version and hurt myself?
BEHOLD THE RED DEATH: NEVER AGAIN
Tumblr media
So, I had a hunch that the sparkly pigments I use in vodka suspensions to decorate my cookies were probably similar, if not the same thing, and if this were true, we would not be chained to nasty-tasting drinks to obtain the magical sparkle.
So, obviously, this called for some experimentation.
I worked with two dark liquors, a cherry lambic and a cheap red wine a friend left at the house, but obviously, I think any somewhat translucent liquid, alcoholic or not, would work. Opaque liquids like milk wouldn’t do at all. I do think the pigments will show best against darker colors, but I may try another experiment with some cider i have about the apartment.
Experiment 1: Cherry lambic with NU Silver luster dust
First off, a VERY LITTLE pigment goes a long way. Also, ignore the ‘not for consumption.’ The pigments are widely used in wedding cake preparation and have been tested and okayed in Europe. They’re non-toxic and safe for consumption but haven’t been tested by the FDA, which is why the label.

That looks like a lot more than it is. I literally took a pen tip and pushed a tiny bit in, but it spreads like crazy.
Tumblr media
Result: YES, IT DOES THE THING, but the foam obscures the cool view from above.
So I was a doofus and left the NU Silver at vrumblr‘s place, so when I decided to try again with red wine, I went with Super Pearl, a white pearly version, which is less shiny, but still pretty bright.
Tumblr media
Again, this is the tiniest bit I could get in there with a toothpick.
Tumblr media
YAAAAAAS. WHY DRINK THE RED DEATH WHEN YOU CAN HAVE WHATEVER YOU LIKE?
Tumblr media
So pretty! I think it would be even more pronounced with the NU Silver, so there’s that. This would be so fun for a party. Or fancy kid’s birthday, I don’t know.
BUT THEN THE MAGIC HAPPENED
I decided to try a less neutral color, and went with SUPER GOLD luster dust, because WHY NOT GO SUPER?
Tumblr media
I used the same wine as before, and this is what happened. I’m going to say right now that the pictures don’t do it justice because it glowed and sparkled.

This should work with a red soda or juice, or any dark juice or pop. The darker, the better, I’d think. Have fun!
Anyhow, you can go to an online shop or hit up a cake decorating store (a real one, not Michael’s or JoAnn’s, if you have one) in your area, but I highly recommend getting yourself some gold luster dust. I suspect any of the bright gold luster dusts like old gold, aztec gold, or antique gold would also work. Don’t bother with the stuff they have at Michael’s. It’s banana-colored and has almost no sparkle.

A new series of prints by artist Roger Peet aim to address a tricky topic: cultural appropriation. In his series In//Appropriate, which debuted at Portland State University’s Littman Gallery this month, Peet printed images of white Americans engaging in cultural appropriation in black ink on tall banners. Frozen in time, Miley Cyrus joyfully twerks with her tongue in its signature position, a hipster wears a keffiyeh, and Katy Perry smiles in her American Music Awards geisha costume. Behind them, another vision of whiteness—a violent one—is printed in red: Miley is starkly framed against a scene of police in Ferguson, a bohemian white girl in a feathered headdress is juxtaposed with an iconic photo of a mountain of buffalo skulls.
To accompany the images, Peet constructed special glasses made from cardboard and red plastic. These are “whiteness goggles,” a sign explains. When you put them on and look at the images, suddenly the red, violent image disappears. Viewers are left with just the visions of Miley, Katy Perry, and Elvis with none of the violence behind them. The viewers are forced to consider the blinders that race creates: one of the privileges of being white is the ability to ignore racism. All too often, the reality of the white supremacy is rendered invisible to people who don’t want to see it.
“When you put on the Whiteness Goggles, the colonial, military and police violence that underpins casual cultural consumption disappears,” explains Peet, in his artist statement of the project. Peet himself is a white immigrant to the US from Britain—he works as a politically minded printmaker with the Justseeds Collective. In addition to well-known celebrities engaged in cultural appropriation, the In//Appropriate show includes an image of Peet, foregrounded holding an American flag against a backdrop of the war in Vietnam and Afghanistan. Including himself in the show was important, Peet says, to show that as a white person coming from England, he faced few hurdles in immigrating to the United States. “I was welcomed with open arms,” he says—a contrast to the racial stereotyping many people of color face when they immigrate the US.
Read more about the show—and listen to voicemails from people calling in to discuss cultural appropriation—on Peet’s Tumblr.

So I was out to eat and this child(maybe 3 years old) in the booth next to us started crying loudly. The mom tried to calm him down but he started to go into tantrum mode and fussed even more. So she picked him up and walked out of the restaurant to a bench outside our window. We could hear her ask him, “look at me, what’s upsetting you?” To which he responded with more crying. So she says, “Well you’re clearly overwhelmed, so we’re going to sit out here and take a break until you can compose yourself and tell me what’s wrong.” Which is exactly what happened after a couple minutes. Anyways I just think it’s so good to speak to your children in a logical, respectful manner instead of shushing them and leaving them to deal with their stress alone.
