This is how we started to live on a boat…

When we moved to London from Tokyo, the first thing we faced was living cost. Needless to say, the rent here in London is quite high especially if you want to live in central. We would like to save money as much as we can until my visa is settled and luckily Simon’s auntie offered us to stay on her narrowboat in London that she wasn’t using.

A narrowboat is a type of boat that was used to transport goods around England during the Industrial Revolution. Nowadays people are using narrowboats as a weekend/summer home, hiring for events and to live on. We’re excited to join the community!

Both of us have never lived somewhere not on land, so everything is a new experience. Some of these experiences are quite intense, but we are having a lot of fun so far:)

ボートに住む事になったきっかけ

もともとは英国人の夫・サイモンと東京に住んでいたのですが、ロンドンに移ることになり、最初の課題が家探し。いかんせん家賃の高いロンドン、zone1やzone2なんかの中心地に住もうものなら東京よりはるかに高いレントを払う必要がある。(もちろん家のタイプによっても違うけど！)

私の英国でのvisaが下り、本格的に移住できるまではできるだけ節約したいところ。そんな中、サイモンの家族が持っているナローボートに滞在させてもらえることになったのです。

ナローボートとは、鉄道や自動車といった交通手段が発達していなかった英国産業革命時代に石炭や氷を運搬する手段として運河が用いられ、それに適した交通手段として製造された船幅が7フィート(約2m)に満たないボートのこと。現在ではサマーシーズンや週末の余暇を過ごす人や、貸切パーティができる遊覧船(日本でいう屋形船みたいな感じ)、そして住居として定住している人もたくさんいて、晴れて私たちもこの一員になったというわけです。

夫も私も陸でしか生活したことがないので笑、この生活の色んなことが初めて。中にはいわゆる”家”に住んでると味わうことが無いような大変なこともあるけど、古い物を大事にする英国人の精神を引き継ぎ、このボートライフをエンジョイしたいと思ってます！
