Greaser is a name given to an American youth street style that was predominantly visible in the 1950s and early 1960s, although it is possible that the style was present in the late 1940s, as the greaser look is aesthetically related to the style of dress adopted by the early motorcycle clubs and gangs of the postwar period.
The problem with dating the greaser aesthetic relates in part to the fact that the term “greaser” seems not to have been applied to this look in writing until the middle of the 1960s (see the Oxford English Dictionary for key dates of use), well after the street style had peaked in popularity and begun to fade from use and morph into a new aesthetic.
Thus, ascertaining when the look emerged is contingent upon locating dated photographs, an effort that presents challenges for the researcher. While a specific date for the advent of the style may be elusive, a well-documented history of the polysemous label is informative. The word “greaser” has been applied since the 19th century as a pejorative term for underclass laborers, especially those of Mexican origin (Bender 2003, xiii). The term has also long been used to indicate a profession: that of a machine “greaser.” The greasers discussed in this entry were generally male, often but not exclusively working class, typically white, and often involved in (or associated themselves with) American hotrod or motorcycle culture.

Note
I am so tired of this narrative. I have studied film, literary criticism, adaptations, etc and can confidently say: The Outsiders (1983) is great movie and an amazing adaptation of the book (especially the Complete Novel version.)
An adaptation is supposed to be different. It’s just not realistic to expect to get the exact same information in two different mediums. Watch some of the deleted scenes, they tried narrating and it did not work. The reason it works in American Psycho would not apply to The Outsiders because Ponyboy is not a deeply psychotic individual whose POV clashes with the images on screen. Additionally, careful viewers of the movie do get the gist that there is some history between Paul and Darry, they understand that Bob hurt Johnny, just because it’s shown instead of told doesn’t mean it’s entirely absent.
As for the maturity level, it’s a kids book. It’s very realistic and raw, but it’s a kids book (there’s a reason it’s a classic Junior High reading assignment) and alienating the main audience to show a darker vision that isn’t entirely present in the text material is just... not the right choice. The book is dark, yes, but Hinton is not explicit with it.
Francis Ford Coppola is one of the great directors ever and he was the right choice! We are very lucky. Any other director in any other era would have butchered the material.
TUMBLR DELETED THIS THE FIRST TIME CAUSE I WENT TO FACT CHECK AND AUGH
Anyway
I might be insane but
I don’t like the outsiders movie because, it leaves out a lot of details that, in the book, was Ponyboy’s internal monologue
Now this is the insane part
I think the movie would benefit with an American Psycho style narration
That would give the movie the ability to share little details that were missed out on because they couldn’t be cleanly explained in the original style
For example, at the rumble in the book, Ponyboy explains that Darry and Paul were once buddies, that played well together on the football team
This creates a deeper meaning to them being on different sides of the rumble because of their economic standing
In the movie, I don’t even think they say Paul’s name, let alone explain his relationship to Darry and why it’s important he’s the one to step up to fight him
This could be fixed if there was really any style of narration. But I think the style of narration used in American psycho really helps to explain Patrick Bateman’s thoughts, feelings, and what is actively going on around him. Including things that are darker in nature, like death.
Which is kinda what the outsiders is about and what was missed in the movie
I’m so normal and they should remake the movie exactly how I want it cause my ideas are the best /silly

Writing Research - The Sixties
The 1960s was a decade that began on 1 January 1960 and ended on 31 December 1969. The 1960s was also refers to an era more often called The Sixties, denoting the complex of inter-related cultural and political trends around the globe. This “cultural decade” is more loosely defined than the actual decade, beginning around 1963 and ending around 1974.
“The Sixties”, as they are known in both scholarship and popular culture, is a term used by historians, journalists, and other objective academics; in some cases nostalgically to describe the counterculture and revolution in social norms about clothing, music, drugs, dress, sexuality, formalities, and schooling. Conservatives denounce the decade as one of irresponsible excess, flamboyance, and decay of social order. The decade was also labeled the Swinging Sixties because of the fall or relaxation of social taboos especially relating to racism and sexism that occurred during this time. [1]

I feel like Sodapop would be obsessed with sandwiches. Peanut butter and honey sandwiches specifically.
I feel like if he was upset at someone and they gave him a sandwich, he’d immediately forget that he was upset.
I don’t know, he just gives off those vibes
I'm pretty sure in the show he makes sandwiches in an apron

So how bad is the outsiders musical?
for people unfamiliar with the source material or not big fans, they seem to be eating it up
everyone else.... not so much.
the most neutral view i have taken from the la jolla previews and what we have coming out is that from the general outset, it fails to be a musical. people tend to praise the score while universally, the songs have not been well received. a lot of reviews and people online have stated that the songs aren't memorable and they tend to forget them in a day which is crazy when it's, you know, a musical and your first aim should be creating memorable music. they also state the boys are shirtless way too much on stage and some of it is inconsistent.
secondly, the character choices are bad. i'm still waiting for more confirmation/flat out spoilers for the changes they've made. from last year at la jolla it was pretty much confirmed and stated that (1) cherry has a huge romantic role with ponyboy, (2) sandy was turned into a soc and was made to get an abortion, (3) the entire message about police brutality was removed, despite the musical mandating the only two greaser characters that die be POC. it seems as if cherry's romantic role has been pared down a bit but she still has too great a role with romantic overtones and too willingly crosses class lines she adamantly refused to cross in canon. dallas' death was modified but he still is not gunned down by a cop.
so, well.
Tumblr media
the thing i've read and heard consistently is that the staging is good and the rumble is the best part. that's it. there's one obvious sponcon account on tiktok trying to push a fandom but the official accounts across the board have low views, particularly for this age group. i'm waiting to hear more and get more spoilers.
(in delulu news though: i do like that darry openly doesn't like dallas getting close/being friends with ponyboy. i'll take that for fanon fic fodder. that's it.)
