For one, Darryl genuinely believes that Carol is too good for him (and that Marco is too good for Grant 😭), and she’s sort of sarcastic and of course very argumentative. He was also into her older sister Stacy in eighth grade lol, who still teases him about their kiss sooo I assume she is also sort of ‘mean’ in the way Darryl likes. And this enters headcanon territory, but I imagine Carol was the sweet/goody two-shoes younger sister while Stacy was the more rebellious older sister (I mean, she played Mary Magdalene lol). Sweet Matilda is also very sassy. And Darryl obviously likes getting into arguments with Henry and Glenn hehe

Grant’s first crush (as far as we know) was a ska-punk skater boy with an eyepatch… enough said. He also thought Glenn was hot (which I think was more about the abs but shh). Marco is very sweet but, again, Grant wholeheartedly believes Marco is too good for him. I have several fics worth of headcanons about Andrew (Grant’s only other named crush/relationship in canon) lmaooo, but in my mind he is also sort of mean and cool

Lincoln… well he literally married Scary 😭 He obviously thinks she is SO cool, and she almost killed him once so! Point made. But I think Chris also adds to it. Again, we don’t know much about them, but the one thing we DO know is that they were also kind of argumentative and maybe even controlling? And the cast compared them to Carol lol. I don’t say that to imply that Chris or their relationship with Link was bad; I LOVE Carol and Chris, and, like Matt said, it’s just one thing about them that doesn’t define their relationship/character or whatever. It’s just an interesting pattern :3
