A little bit about CCCD
The Centro Civico Cultural Dominicano, Inc. was founded Decemer 14, 1962. It is a 501 (c) 3, not-for-profit organization and is the oldest Dominican organization in the United States.
In addition to being an active organization  for the past 53 years, promoting cultural heritage and integration to the mainstream culture, CCCD has always demonstrated concern for the youth who will be the future and has always encouraged integration into the modern establishment through education.
CCCD is within the Washington Heights and Hamilton Heights area. These areas have been and continue to be immigrant dominated. As a result, the concentration of minority groups, and late arrival of persons from Latin America, often creates a lack of services to immigrants that may result in the following issues : health and nutrition issues, unemployment, crowded schools, deteriorating housing among others. These conditions prevent many immigrants from flourishing and competing with others who are provided the best resources. However, CCCD is instrumental in bridging the gap by carrying out an enriching program that may empower immigrants in our community and provide them with the information and networks they need to thrive. At CCCD we utilize museums as a source of knowledge, we support the arts: drama, poetry, reading, writing, acting, crafts, and dance, we work closely in collaboration with other organizations in our community to provide our young and adult community members the tools they need to be better prepared to enter and compete in the American society.
The CCCD art program and Francisco Chapman-Veloz gallery are one of CCCD's proudest achievements. Our gallery has been host to many artist, mostly painters, but also photographers, sculptors, and artisans. CCCD has presented solo and collective exhibits that include works by African-American, Latino, and other artist in the community as well as around the nation. CCCD has provided much needed space and exposure to the vibrant artistic community at no expense to them.
CCCD is not only a home to painters but also a venue in which many other artist may It be musicians, poets, writers, or actors/actresses may come and share their talents and also increase their exposure. In CCCD's Literary Monday's we host an open mic that is open to anyone who would like to share their art. We also have a Friday program this is dedicated to cinema and theatre.
Other than our mission to preserve and stimulate the growth of art and culture, CCCD also had developed a diverse legal program for the community. We work closely with the Dominican Bar Association to bring seminars on crime prevention, domestic violence awareness, immigration reforms, tenant rights, stop & frisk, as well as other subjects. Through this programming we hope to provide community members the information they need to be able to protect themselves, their families, and their belongings.
