When Rebecca Sugar mentioned White was inspired by the designs of Nell Brinkley of the early 1900’s, I took that and ran.
Growing up, my father was obsessed with the silent movie from the 20’s Metropolis. One of the first “science fiction” movies ever. The futuristic. repressed society, the stunning linework reminded me so much of Homeworld.
@holicmodedesign on Instagram was instrumental in helping translate this vintage yet futuristic vibe in White Diamond, marrying early Hollywood glam with something foreign and alien. I can’t wait for you to see the entire design at Katsucon when I get the chance to shoot her.
Added a silver glaze over this stunning gem from @hamsterparade on Instagram to fit with the overall aesthetic. Tights though not visible are from @welovecolors
Huge inspiration from the incredible art of @bunnymoondoji on instagram
I can’t thank you all enough for helping me change my mind.
Sailor Melanin was actually born from an Instagram post on my personal account. I decided to wear two puffs in my hair to work, some glittery makeup and wood moon earrings. I took a picture and captioned it “Sailor Melanin”. My friend was like, “ooh. That would be a cute cosplay!” I agreed, but didn’t think about it until I was in Joanns and walked past some kente fabric.
I bought a body suit from capezios and made the skirt and collar from fabric I bought from Joanns. I actually struggled a bit because I tried to use a pattern I bought…and it was waaaaaay undersized. Numbers lie.
I was super surprised by the response at the con. It went over way better than I thought. I had never been stopped for so many pictures! People told me they were inspired by me, and I was shocked. I inspire people? That was a crazy thought to me. I just thought it would be great to present the idea that there are black girls who grow up with magical girl dreams too.
I met my best friends through cosplay. I am relaxed and most at peace when sewing a cosplay. Cosplay brings my family together. I found confidence I didn’t know I had, pride that was dormant and a way to physically advocate the things that matter to me.
I don’t care who you are, cosplay is for everybody and EVERY BODY. Never do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable just to meet a standard. Cosplay the characters you love because you love them:)
Can you believe that I’m only missing the glove and a couple of details on the stormlord buckle and then I’m done!?? I’m so hyped to be a barbarian babe

Great Fairies
These four sisters live in fountains located at various points in Hyrule, and they possess secret techniques that allow them to strengthen Link’s equipment. Each of them speaks with a different vocal inflection, and they all have different ways of expressing their interest in men. It’s said that Cotera is the guardian of Kakariko Village.
[Top-Left Note]
Their hair flutters in the opposite direction of their wings.
[Top-Right Note]
Gems are randomly interspersed throughout their hair. You can see them from the front as well.
Me: Okay, now I have to make a stage costume, and the con is next weekend.
Also me: *focuses on the tiniest details that no one cares about to avoid sewing the costume*
(The buttons are pretty… done, I guess - that’s the nicest thing I can say about them. They’re mizuhiki cord hot glued to some black worbla. If you zoom in on the reference picture you can actually see that the buttons are woven out of something. COSTUME DESIGNERS…)
OKAY SO HERE ARE THE PICS. Inspired by this post by @pipistrellus (@pipcomix)
These are 16th century Renaissance inspired hotpants, panelled with navy velvet with a red silk lining and hand-embroidered butt slogan, which I believe is like 300% historically accurate. They’re actually modelled off a genuine Tudor pattern but then made ridiculous because who am I.
Worn with thigh highs and a 18th C shirt cuz it was all I had to hand and frankly shirts don’t change that much lol.
First off, I am blown away by the amount of love I received for my Jester costume!!! She was amazing to make, so much fun to wear, and all around an incredible experience from start to finish!! I have a bad habit of getting sucked into details but I think it worked in my favor this time around! There were so many little things about Jester’s outfit I wanted to get just right, and fussing over them was honestly half the fun.
The beautiful photos taken of the completed costume were done by a dear friend of mine @ivorivet, who isn’t just a fantastic photographer, but also an amazingly beautiful talented cosplayer in her own right!! I can’t thank her enough for doing my solo shoot and I love her to bits 💖💖💖
Other helping hands are credited to @dontevenlikecoconut, @centeris2, and @artofnana, who all did little tasks on other costumes so I could focus on Jester, or drove me up packages from home so I didn’t lose my mind the night before con. 💙💙💙
I did something a little different this time around with my WIPs! If you follow me on instagram (pearlybaecosplay) then you would have seen the hell crunch that was on my insta stories all month!! If you missed it, no worries!! I saved all my Jester WIPs onto a collection on my insta profile, if people were interested in seeing extra details and some video progress.
One last thing before I let y'all go; my ko-fi is still active!! So if you like my work and appreciate these big costume writeups, please consider donating a coffee or two!! The link is available on my blog, or you can type in pearlybae at the site and find me that way!
As per usual, more details of how I made this costume are under the cut!! 🍭
Ahhh, as soon as the E3 trailer dropped for the Pirates of the Caribbean trailer for KH3 I KNEW I had to make this cosplay. It was so much fun to do and I loved every aspect, especially making the keyblade!! Hope you like my cosplay! Many more photos to come!
Tutorial on how I made this cosplay and keyblade will be on my Patreon:
