man if i wanted to like, rewatch all of spn and then write an academic essay on it i could write a paper called “Righteous Men: Power, Abuse, and the Interplay of the Textual and the Metatextual on the CW’s Supernatural” but as it stands actually i do not wish to do this so i’m just going to like, Poast, but like.
dean winchester is the righteous man. dean winchester is the righteous man and this is really complicated. because one of the like, basic tenets of supernatural, meta textually, is that dean always has to be right. the world bends to make him so. if sam ever disobeys dean, it will always turn out to be a horrible mistake, regardless of how it seems. and this is the justification for dean’s need to control sam. like: dean needs, psychologically, to control sam, dean must, according to the show, always be correct, therefore if sam ever disobeys dean it is necessarily a mistake.
and dean winchester is the righteous man. but who defines what is righteous? we know that there is a moral sorting algorithm for humanity, that some go to heaven in some go to hell. we know that we’re meant to QUESTION this sorting algorithm, because of that one joke in 6x20 (”i still question his admittance here” “he was devout. trumps everything”). like, spn never goes anywhere with it but the idea that the externally imposed morality of the spnverse is wrong like… exists in the text.
hell, seasons 4/5 are literally about rebelling against heaven. you could read that as rebelling against angelic usurpers who don’t know the true will of god, the text kind of tries to have it both ways on that at least during s4/s5, but the idea that the entire externally imposed morality of spn is maybe wrong is embedded in the text, if only by accident.
and dean winchester is the righteous man, but according to whose algorithm? the only other candidate for the position is john. how is john winchester a righteous man? he is textually at best a deadbeat dad, and at worst a horrifyingly abusive one. and i’m pretty sure i’m textually supported when i say it’s likely closer to the second one. but he’s a righteous man. and like with dean, the text bends around him. hell, in 14x13, well into the Andrew Dabb Actively Deconstructs SPN’s Whole Shit era of spn, when they’re doing things like “criticizing dean for maybe being abusive to sam” and “acknowledging that cas is in love with dean” and “killing god/the author,” dean wishes for his father back and it’s treated as a happy if tragic family moment, and not evidence that dean has still never healed from john’s abuse. the text is ambivalent about john winchester. he’s an abusive father; he still needs to be a good man.
what i’m saying here, i guess, is that the text of supernatural itself enforces the externally enforced morality of the spn universe, who goes to heaven and who goes to hell and who is a righteous man. but at the same time it criticizes and questions itself. it’s ambivalent. the world bends to make dean right, he is the righteous man. even though often he’s wrong and unrighteous.
dean winchester is a righteous man, but he’s a righteous man by the definition of heaven, an authoritarian regime bent on destroying the world. he’s a righteous man by the definition of god, the final series villain, hell bent on controlling everything. so what does that make him?

Scenes/Things in Supernatural that genuinely don't make sense to me if Dean was straight:
The confession booth scene.
Sam just rolling with the fact that Dean's siren is a guy while still thinking sirens infect people through sex.
Dean being flustered by several men: Gunner Lawless, Aaron, Doctor Sexy, etc.
All the parallels between Destiel and other couples. (A big one being "last night on Earth" bc how do you do that accidentally.)
Having all the gay jokes be on Dean instead of Sam.
Paralleling Sam meeting his childhood celebrity crush with Dean meeting Gunner Lawless.
The boner Dean got when Cas cleaned up.
Dean gulping after Cas does an impression from a Western movie.
Charlie, a lesbian, calling Castiel "dreamy."
The way Mary looks at Dean and Cas when they hug.
Dean wondering why everyone assumes he's gay, while Sam not caring.
The logic that Charlie can't flirt with guys because she's only attracted to women, but then having Dean flirt with the guy for her.
Dean seeming disappointed when learning that Aaron's flirting was fake.
The amount of time Dean and Cas spend staring at each other.
Dean canonically having an orgy with Crowley.
A woman saying that she knows when someone's pining for someone else to Dean, just for us to learn that Dean was never in love with Amara.
The set design and script choices that lead to a cross in the background while Dean said "I do." to Cas after he came back to life.
Edit: To the people who say I can't use the siren as an example because the siren is supposed to be his brother, and therefore his siren being a man doesn't work. If you reread that bullet point, then you will realize that I didn't put it down as just simply Dean's siren being a man. I recognize that the siren is supposed to be his brother. It's the fact that Sam still thinks the siren infects people through sex, not knowing that it's actually through saliva when he realizes who the siren is. So when he sees that Dean's siren is a guy, he had to assume they had sex, and he does not seem surprised by this at all.
