Vibes to plot in 5 steps
How many times have I heard the issue of having vibes only with zero plot? Well, if this is the case, you probably already have a lot more than you think! It’s only a matter of organization. In this post I’ll take you through it in 5 steps, and hopefully you can go from a vague atmospheric idea, to an actual story!
No plot, vibes only? This is a very common phenomenon in writing.
Here’s a step-by-step on how you can go from having only an atmosphere, a few random scenes and two strong characters, to a full cohesive outline.
Step #1 - Build a setting
Usually, when you have vibes for a project, it means you have some kind of a visual, likely an idea of an aesthetic or a setting you might want to use. So why not start there?
Gain clarity over the setting by exploring:
the size of the location the attractions, buildings, entertainment, iconic spots
the types of characters you might meet there
the weather, the flora, the fauna
the sounds and smells
Think about how these elements can contribute to your plot and become a source of conflict!
Step #2 - Round out your character arcs
As a vibes writer, you probably already have an idea of who your characters are, or at least what they feel like. It’s time to dig a bit deeper into this.
Work out:
their major flaw, and how they will overcome it
their external goal, the thing they’re chasing during the plot
their voice
their backstory
how they fit (or don’t fit) into the world you created
Step #3 - Think about relationship arcs
Are there any relationships you want to explore during this story? These can be romances, friendships, family, enemies etc! But I strongly recommend laying out your character one by one and determining what their dynamic looks like with another, and whether it changes, grows or falls apart through the story.
Step #4 - Identify your major plot points
Here is where most outlining falls apart, so don’t give up now! Let’s identify:
your inciting incident
what your character(s) decide to do about it
what obstacles they need to overcome
the plot twist in the middle where they learn something new
their adapted plan of action in response to the new info
the moment where they lose all hope
how they bring it all back
what is different about them by the end
Step #5 - Bring it all together
Now’s the part to bring in all your subplots and details to wrap it all up!
What characters did you come up with in step #1? What do they bring to the story? What complications can you bring in from the location you’re using? Have you got any minor characters whose arc you want to tie in somewhere? Do you have a behind-the-scenes for your antagonist that you can hint at?

i told you to stay there.
it's my job to protect you.
i'll come with you.
i can't stand having someone follow me around all the time.
don't you have anything better to do than just stand there?
i don't need a bodyguard. i can take care of myself.
you won't even know i'm here.
you make me feel safe.
may i please come in?
if you need me, i'm right here.
i won't let anything happen to you.
we'll talk in the car.
stop sneaking away from me!
get behind me!
they think you need protecting.
your life is in danger. that's why i'm here.
don't call me that. my first name is fine.
maybe we should get to know each other, considering you're going to be around me all the time.
can you take me home?
i feel safe with you.
you're very intimidating, you know.
i'm just doing my job.
i don't think we're allowed to do that.
i'm not supposed to drink on the job.
stay with me. please.
i can be myself around you.
i don't see you as my bodyguard. i see you as a friend.
what if someone sees us?
i'll take extra precaution.
keep the paparazzi away from me.
i'm not used to the whole bodyguard thing.
i'm coming with you.
take my jacket. you're freezing.
i would lay down my life to protect you.
why do they think you need a bodyguard?
i didn't ask for this.
if anything happens, you get behind me. understand?

muse a is a personal assistant to a billionaire and their most recent task is to find that perfect someone for their boss. it is proposed that muse a should go on pre-dates before anyone is considered to go on a real date with the billionaire. one night, muse a sits across from muse b, another billionaire — one who is cuter and kinder than they expected. the two of them hit it off, they get along and make each other laugh. muse b doesn’t make fun of muse a when they can’t pronounce a certain dish or wine; muse b actually thinks a lot of the dinner is overpriced and pays for the whole thing, treating muse a to dessert and a ride home in their town car. a is sold on b meeting their boss — they think that b is perfect, not realizing that maybe that spark would on exist for the two of them. not for muse b and their boss.
things change when muse a gets a call from their boss saying that the date went horribly; only for their next call to be from muse b, who enjoyed their time with muse a so much that they want to go out with them again.
muse a doesn’t understand — they’re a simple personal assistant who lives with two roommates and is using these pre-dates as meal tickets. what does this perfect billionaire see in them anyway ? muse b is charmed completely, wanting to spoil the other with dinners and gifts. they had such a spark, such chemistry — but will this date cost muse a their job ? will they make it past date 2, or was it just a one time fling ?
