hello mae! i need your help:( how do you come up with clothes? i found your blog yesterday and saw your link and zelda designs (i’ll leave the link below, tumblr won’t allow me to attach it since i’m going on anon) and the clothing is just amazing… i struggle so much with this, creating outfits and with character design, but especially, the clothes ahhh :((( are they based on anything specific? on real life fashion…? i like that it looks historical, but it has that fantasy feel to it. i wish i could do something similar ahh, your art is beautiful, i’m obsessed :’D

first of all thank you for reaching out to me I am honored!

I really wish I had access to the original file of that artwork so i could tell you if i had any reference pictures, but I think a lot of the designs I came up with were just brewed in my imagination. I remember being inspired by viking/nordic style imagery and I think there is also a studio ghibli influence (nausicaa, princess mononoke).

My advice for getting better at clothing design would be to draw fanart of characters whose designs you love. If you are specifically talking about designing historical/fantasy outfits, look at the clothing of old artworks and try redraw it with other characters wearing it, I think the more you are exposed to it the more your brain is able to pull different elements from things youve seen (and practiced) to create something original.

When drawing that zelda artwork I did not care if things made sense or were 'realistic' I was moreso experimenting with shapes and colours, and I had a lot of fun with it!

I'm not sure how much my advice would help so I would also suggest to look for tutorials online that go into much more detail!

hey thank you for reaching out! I currentley don't have a store for my art, and I also don't know if I have a higher quality image of the rex and king picture as I drew it in 2017 so the file is god knows where, You deffo have my permission to print the copy from tumblr for your own personal use! I appreciate you asking and hopefully I will get a shop up in running in the near future.
