c: jealousy, xiao is bad at feelings, first kiss
It’s strange—this foreign feeling of jealousy curling uncomfortably in his chest, still festering now long hours after you skipped off into the city with the Wushou dancer hot on your heels. It leaves a foul, acrid taste in his mouth, the frayed edges of his nerves humming with restless energy.
He almost wishes he ventured into the city for the festival, just this once.
Almost.
If only to see the curve of your smile illuminated by the glow of the lanterns.
To hear the bright sound of your laughter over the din of the crowd.
To feel the excited beating of your heart—
“Stop sulking, I told you to come.”
The sound of your voice interrupts Xiao from his thoughts, followed by the feeling of your shoulder jostling him as you come to stand beside him, both of you gazing off into the distance to watch the wind carry several stray lanterns up into the endless night sky.
“You had more than enough company,” he replies evenly, not allowing himself the opportunity to glance over at you, though he feels the warmth of your body pressed against his bare shoulder. “Someone who enjoys crowds far more than I do.”
He has no right to you, after all.
You’re quiet for a moment before a small laugh escapes your lips.
He finally turns to look at you, furrowing his brow at the amused grin on your lips. “What?”
You casually lean your body back against the cliffside, fingers curling around Xiao’s soft belt to firmly tug him forward. He stumbles, nose nearly brushing your own as he catches himself, both hands planted against the rocky surface on either side of your face.
“Don’t tell me you’re jealous of Gaming,” you tease, eyes glinting as you tilt your head.
Xiao sighs, glancing sideways to avoid your gaze. “He’s far more…sociable than I am.”
A small huff of air escapes your lips. “And?”
“...and perhaps you would prefer to spend your time with him, rather than wasting it with me,” he finishes, one hand curling into a fist, gloved fingers scraping against the stone.
All the time you’ve wasted dancing around this something with him—something that he’s not sure he even knows how to give you.
“Or perhaps I prefer stubborn, reclusive yakshas who don’t understand the concept of kissing someone when you like them.”
Xiao inhales sharply, amber eyes meeting your own. “I’m not stubborn.”
You laugh again, and he revels in rich sound, regardless of if it's at his own expense, drawn to it like a lazy feline to the afternoon sunlight. “Then what would you call it?”
His thumb brushes against your hair, eyes trailing over the planes of your face—soft, gentle shapes that he’s long-since memorized as he mutters, “You humans and your troublesome emotions.”
Emotions that have come alive inside of him in spades since you came stumbling into his life, yawning awake from an endless dormancy to bask in the warmth of your perpetual glow.
Emotions that leave him restless and wanting in your absence.
Emotions that draw his gaze to the delicate curve of your lips, something that may very well be desire flaring red-hot in his gut.
“Xiao—”
It will always be his undoing—the way you say his name. Whisper-soft and reverent, like nobody ever has before.
But in this moment, it’s far more than that.
It’s the sound of the last of his restraint crumbling, yielding to an unrelenting pull he can no longer deny, not when every part of him is crying out to touch you.
To hold you.
To ki—
“Xiao, please.”
He kisses you.
Xiao cups your face in both of his hands and kisses you hard, claiming your mouth with his own like he’s wanted to for far longer than he'll admit.
And as a tiny, pleased sound escapes you when his tongue slides across the seam of your lips, a nearly imperceptible shudder runs through the adeptus as he realizes the full weight of the power you hold over him—the way you could bring him to his knees.
The way he’d let you, without a second thought.
