“i can’t do this anymore” says a girl who is not only going to do it but do it well

hi everyone, long time no see! coming back to tumblr with a pitch that one friend rated 12/10, another 15/10, and no one less than a 10 (that i will be mentioning for the purposes of this post).

so basically me and my girlfriend are in our final year as university undergrads, and are fighting for our lives for stuff to put on our cvs / master applications that falls in line with our degree programs and interests (english literature for both). as much as i'd like it to, 'spending well over 80 hours mapping out dnd sessions' for some reason doesn't tend to appeal to employers or admissions offices.

this is where VULTURE CULTURE comes in.

we've laid out the principal tenets on the 'about' page, but a tldr for whoever is interested:

At Vulture Culture, we aim to take the works of people they may not necessarily feel the best about, works that may not otherwise see the light of day, and give them a ‘home.’ We believe that there’s no such thing as a story not worth telling. By not charging submission fees (be so for real) and keeping our guidelines few, we also hope to erode some of the traditional barriers in publishing, and create a more accessible space for all.

in other words, GIVE US YOUR LEFTOVERS.

we are a literary magazine that will accept anything that exists in the mid range of what you love and hate. have you ever wanted to be published but where do you even start? here. are you unsure what to do with that old work that's been sitting in your drafts forever (it's good enough to post, but not good enough to be picked up by anyone of significance)? hi.

our first issue theme is NEW BODIES, and we are just as curious as you to find out what that means. deadline is march 1st, 2024.

come help us be employable or whatever. also in return you get to clear up some draft space and see your name in print. together, love wins 🏆

ok deep rooted personal issues guessign. I feel like at least one of them is u felt u were deeply unlovable (in a romantic way) in high school. I also think some sort of guilt issues maybe surrounding family. and maybe some issues surrounding sex but in the way that makes people weird authors not in the way they makes them catholic tradwives.

oh this is fun.

1) actually no! i was in a steady relationship from ages 14 to 18, so exactly all of my high school experience, before going on to be in two more, nearly back to back (still very happily in one of these). i was always very secure in my love life, but did have another fun flavor of the issue, which was 'what if the other person likes me more than i like them, what if i'm not feeling what i'm supposed to be feeling about them' etc. just this constant second guessing and internal micromanagement. this is still technically an ongoing issue, but i'm a lot calmer about it now (if what i can give is enough for the other person then it's enough for me too, i'm not going to hold myself accountable to a bar of feelings i made up in my head). but anyway yes i loooove subverting expectations. what if i was so lovable actually and that was part of the problem.

2) not family per se, but my relationship with my mom (single mom only child household) (mom has no social life outside of her work) is.. a little layered. it's not guilt necessarily but 'i'm all she's really got going for her interpersonally' does add some interesting features to our dynamic i think.

just to give you all an idea of the kind of person i am, one of my old high school acquaintances (i am not going to use her actual name for this story) recently chimed in on our email chain (not my idea) saying she was getting married in may (we are 21). and the way she decided to phrase it was 'in other news, im getting married (rip stacy fakename)!'.

and being both a) greek, where women do not change last names when they marry, and b) the product of a single mother household, it genuinely didn't occur to me that what she meant was that she was planning to take her future husband's last name. and i genuinely thought she was making weirdly timed commentary regarding femicide statistics and potentially masking a cry for help

Σε όλα του τα παιδικά χρόνια είχε μια εμμονή με τη θρησκεία με αποτέλεσμα να παρατήσει το σχολείο στα 12 και να πάει να σκαρφαλώσει το αντίστοιχο Έβερεστ για να δείξει ότι το πάνθεον τον θέλει όσο το θέλει κι αυτός. Το πέτυχε αλλά φυσικά πήρε και το μυαλο του αέρα. Οι γονείς του επειδή τον θεωρούσαν νεκρό αφού ήταν τελικά ζωντανός αποφάσισαν να τον αφήσουν να πάει να γίνει μοναχός κι έτσι ξεκινάει η ιστορία του. Γιατί να τον ψηφίσετε

είναι μια ναρκισσιστική μάζα από κόμπλεξ που φάσκει και αντιφάσκει και αιρετικός με τον πιο ανορθόδοξο τρόπο. Στο σημείο αυτό έχει γίνει τόσο μανιακός με τη θρησκεία του που φέρεται λες και είναι ο ίδιος μέλος του πάνθεον. marinko is a disgraced surgeon - previously one of his town's best, his life took a spiral for the lovecraftian horror-esque after a patient died under his care. marinko, in a state of unchecked shock, stayed by her body for days at a time, and coped in the worst imaginable way by finally deliriously romanticizing it- realizing there was something beautiful about death too, that it was just as multifaceted as life, etc. that the inside of a dead body is just as interesting as an alive one. that is around the time when more patients started to die under his watch, his mental health spiraled further, and some choice incidents of gravedigging were reported (this is what happens when you don't switch career paths). a lot more stuff happens in the meantime for him mentally, but eventually his fall for grace features some less than savory rumors concerning him and the bodies of his patients and marinko being forced to flee town. rn he hangs out with a terminally ill woman who makes her living by retrieving the corpses of addicts, extracting the drug that killed them, purifying it, and reselling. they were childhood best friends. she has agreed to let him cut her open when she dies. he loves her too much to let her die like that. he also can't wait.

i don't have any writing for him yet but stay tuned and vote him if you like fucking crazy potentially necrophilic doctors (he denies fhe rumors) with long hair 🙏🙏
