Since the toxic Scarian anon came out with their comments, I’ve been feeling as if this might be time to speak about something that weighs on my mind.
Hermitcraft Scarian is also inherently toxic.
Please, hear me out. This is important and the fact that our community has let this slide for so long is something that seriously disturbs me. When our community lets toxic behaviors like this pervade into our literature, we perpetuate this ideal relationship that is abusive and tells us that this kind of abuse is acceptable.
Hermitcraft Scarian is toxic in the reverse way that Third Life Scarian was represented to be in the previous anon’s confession. Grian appears to be the abuser while Scar, over and over again, is the victim.
Most importantly is the way Grian belittles Scar for his intelligence. Every time Scar and Grian interact, it makes me cringe and I just wait for the moment that Grian says something demeaning or calls Scar stupid, even if it’s subtle. Perhaps the subtle wording is even worse, it mocks Scar in a way that he cannot understand but the audience obviously can.
Scar and Grian are also police apologists. If you have seen any of Hermitcraft season 10, you’ll know that Scar has been hired to police the shopping district. He has made multiple jokes about “keeping people in line” to ensure they abide by the law. This is a take I’ve seen too often in the Blue Live Matter movement. They either support cops or are willfully ignorant to the fates of so many people who have suffered from police brutality.
There’s so much more wrong with their relationship, but I just needed to get this off my chest.
Mumbo is also an enabler. Probably the worst kind.

Caleb Is Autistic
Caleb Widogast is an autistic bean: a masterpost.
-Special interest in magic (the dude is self-taught just from reading a heck of a lot of books throughout his life)
-Hyperfocus on his books, while we’re on that subject.
-The reaction he has in the bathhouse to finally being somewhere somewhere quiet, and peaceful, and isolated where he can recover himself is relatable af tbh.
-How blunt he is just in general: (eg: ‘Can I read your books?’ ‘Go away.’ Caleb ‘I don’t have time for social niceties’ Widogast. He’s really just like that in general, though, most of his interactions are just. Pure blunt/simple statements)
-Very literal in his thinking: ‘What kind of establishment do you take me for?’ (rhetorical question) ‘Well it’s a barn, ja?’ - a)- he answers a rhetorical question and b)- he takes everything completely literally.
-Submerging his head in water is a Sensory No and that’s why he avoids it (he also doesn’t like showers for the same reason, but baths are good)
-He has a shutdown after the fight with the two zombie guards in episode 2, he stays alone in a tent, in the dark, in the quiet for quite some time afterwards as he collects himself while the others are looking for him/getting their stuff together.
-He also goes nonverbal at the same point (Liam specifically says, at least twice, that “I don’t say anything but..” “During all the busy work I’m, like, not saying anything but I keep giving worried looks to my little friend.”)
-Combat is noisy, loud, bright, intense and just generally super overwhelming sensory wise (which explains the above two points, and also why he hangs back a little)
-He literally happy flaps every single time Nott uses a spell because of how happy he is. Like he gets overwhelmed, can’t speak for a moment, flaps his hands, and gasps. Like. Peak Autistic Culture right there.
-The ‘social anxiety’ moment in episode 6. Like a)- social anxiety is pretty frequently comorbid with autism (for, like, obvious reasons) but also the fact he informs the group of this and the blunt, deliberate way that he just gets up and walks out.
-’hahaha got you!” “It was a joke??” “No I thought we were all going to die.” does not even comprehend his own jokes what a dork. Also completely socially inappropriate comment tbh, zero understanding of the current mood. And then the super blunt follow-up. Just. Literaly everything.
-He sends Frumpkin onto Beau’s lap to distract her/keep her occupied/her hands busy…which implies that he does the same thing so like…Frumpkin is the official disaster crew magic cat stim toy. Confirmed.
-The above also makes sense as to why he wants Frumpkin back in cat form so badly. (That and the whole this is a Change and I’m not entirely fond of it thing).
-Also that single-minded fixation he has on goals - like turning Frumpkin back into a cat while the others are like ‘uh, Caleb, people are dying rn is this really the most important thing?’ and he just…But cat. He’s very sort of, no, one thing at a time, I decided I was doing this I’m now wholly focused on it to the exclusion of all else.
-Very methodically counting out his gold coins one by one by one (and probably making a neat pile of them let’s be honest)
-Definitely shows signs of scripting his conversations - the bathhouse interaction felt scripted/very planned, as did the initial confrontation with the guard when he demanded to see Norda after they killed the devil toad.
-Also explains why he’s a really pretty good actor/liar in these controlled situations that he’s prepared for, but socially awkward/useless in other, less-controlled/more on-the-fly situations.
-Dyspraxia: ‘I stubbed my toe’ while trying to stealth through the mines.
‘I feel like we’re seeing more and more of Caleb’s social awkwardness’ actual Jester quote.
-Captain Literal Strikes Again: ‘You want to burn the mine to the ground? Underground?’ Figure of Speech, Caleb, figure of speech.
-Rocking™
