YESSS i don’t do much character x character bc there’s not many ships i like. but for them. i will always make an exception !!! this is also the oldest request i have so. my bad!
also this is an au where the killing game does not! happen! bc f asunaro rights !!!
joe and sara are the perfect friends to lovers; because they’re so close most people can’t discern which one they actually are. it’s a natural progression, with a lot of one-sided pining on sara’s part. she tries to support him as he goes on dates with other people in his class but none seem to ever work out. joe never feels the way he feels when he’s with sara with them, but joe being oblivious doesn’t connect the dots and assumes it’s just because they’re not as close friends as he is with sara.
joe is the one who first confesses his feelings. it’s a few months before their graduation, he finally understands why it is he’s so nervous about graduating. imagining his life without sara? it’s not something he wants to think of. he’s known her since he was little and maybe his feelings for her were a little more than platonic affection. like he loved her more than anything.
knowing he can’t live with his feelings any longer, he runs to sara’s house first thing in the morning, pushing past her brother kai and making his way upstairs, where she had just finished getting dressed for school. he’s out of breath, chest heaving but managing out the words: “sara! i love ya so much, sara! will ya be mine?!”. she’s so happy because she’s been waiting for so long, but she still throws all her pillows at him for barging in her room like that.
nothing really changes once they get together in their dynamic. joe has always been affectionate with sara and vice versa. in fact, had it not been for joe parading around the halls at school announcing that him and sara are finally together no one would’ve guessed.
it takes a while for their first kiss to happen, both of them are inexperienced and nervous and never know when the right time is. it happens naturally, they’re doing homework together and there’s a lull in the conversation; a quiet pause when they’re just looking at each other. joe’s eyes flit down to sara’s lips and suddenly he feels himself grow warm. he mutters a quiet “can i kiss you?” and sara nods slowly. the kiss is quick and sweet, but it has both of them red-faced and excited for more.
they looove karaoke dates. it’s the easiest way joe can get sara to laugh, and sara enjoys watching joe making a fool out of himself for her sake. plus, afterwards joe can always take sara around town, the two holding hands and looking at the shops. neither of them have much money, so it is mainly just window shopping (and making fun of how overpriced everything is).
speaking of shopping! joe loves gifting sara cute things. sara has a weak spot for all things tiny and cute – and joe has a knack for finding things like that. after a few years of dating, sara will have a plushie collection that could rival a collector’s.
joe’s loves the attention he gets from sara. joe has a lot of friends, but no one who sees him for who he is like she does. sara listens to his problems, cares for him beyond how funny he is or how he can make others happy. she genuinely cares for his happiness, and for that, he wants her to be with him forever.

i still don’t understand why recovery isn’t romanticized more. getting better after being at your lowest point? working hard and doing what it takes to feel safe again? knowing that occasional dips aren’t the end of the world? changing yourself and ridding your life of toxic behavior/people? i’m sorry that sounds better than any edgy miserable story i’ve ever heard.
