Dungeon Meshi. Ah, Dungeon Meshi.
If Yuuki Bakuhatsu Bang Bravern was my surprise favourite from the season, coming out of nowhere with a bombastic start, Dungeon Meshi was the anticipated adaptation I didn't expect to love myself, before it slowly grew on me and became the highlight of my week.
I've mentioned before how much I love the biology/ecology aspect of it. I'm not big on anime food usually, but Dungeon Meshi makes the cooking interesting, they way they dissect both fantasy food and fantasy creatures. It's so delightfully nerdy! I love the cast too, they're all charmingly quirky, but still grounded when they need to be, and they work amazingly as a group. It's cool how you have Laois and Marcille driving the search for Falin, with Chilchuck and Senshi following along, and then you have Laois and Senshi dream up some crazy dish while Chilchuck and Marcille are making faces in the background. They have all these different dynamics and roles and it's fun to see how they mix with each other, when they're in agreement, and when someone's crossed a line no one else can or will follow. It can't be overstated how much thought, love and care has been put into each character and the world they live in.
For me the series turned into something special around the time they reached the lake, while the past few episodes with the red dragon fight and aftermath have been blowing me away. I knew there was something off with most of the group, I sort of new what the plan was all along, but actually seeing them search for, dig out and put together Falin's remains was chilling to watch. It mimicked their earlier behaviour, but with a much more sinister context and I wasn't sure how to feel watching the characters get to it so matter of fact.
The animation and production has been amazing too. It's been such a joy to watch, and I've been side-eyeing all the comments I read from people who didn't want Studio Trigger to adapt Dungeon Meshi because ...they've done series with fanservice in the past????? Those comments annoyed me so much for being mostly unfounded and hypocritical I had to bring them up lmao.
I have no idea what to expect from the rest of the series. For the most part I've suspected some sort of political intrigue, but the new trailer showed me more adventuring and more monsters, which I'm honestly much more interested in, the way Dungeon Meshi does it.

I'm in a weird mood to watch anything, but I had to watch the finale of Yuuki Bakuhatsu Bang Bravern before the twitter spoilers got to me.
It was a fun series, made with a lot of love, but I have to bring up this one tweet I've been unable to forget ever since I saw it back in February, of how much potential this show would have to keep going for what seems like forever (like they did in the 90's), with all sorts of silly episodic adventures. While I loved watching it, I can't let go of that idea.
I'm genuinely so sad modern series, especially original series, are so short-lived. Suisei no Majo got 24 episodes compared to the 50-something other Gundam series seem to get. Ikuhara's shows have gone from 3-cours to 2-cours to 1-cour to 1-cour minus an episode compared to the last. And while there are amazing 1-cour series out there, these shows I mentioned all have large casts with complex characters who would benefit from more screen time and some down time as well. Bang Bravern had to rush a lot of things, and while it's not a huge complaint of mine, I guess I'm leaving this series thinking "wow that was entertaining, but can you imagine what more it could've been?"

Guess who ended up crying at her thesis supervisor's office already. We were only talking about what I should pick as a topic, I guess I have a lot of baggage and concerns over it lmao
I feel pretty bad rn, although it was good that I was able to communicate with her how I'm putting myself under a lot of pressure over this, and I'm ambitious so now she'll help me make my thesis as good as possible :)

I'm liking Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road so much more on my second watch! I always liked the premise, but I have a hard time with characters who are very one-note, happy to go along with anything with their only personality trait being their love for another character, so I spent the first half of the series wondering if I'll ever start liking Akari, or she starts showing us more personality. She does, but we don't get to see it until halfway in, and even then it's very subtle in the sense that we only get some glimpses to what she's been through and is working towards. Out of all the unfinished yuri adaptations I've seen, this is the one I'm desperate to get a continuation for. There's so much build up the anime never gets to (not that I know what's going on in or with the LNs).
Going from what seems like blind infatuation, to "I've re-winded the time we've spent together more times you can imagine and will continue to do so until I find a loop where you successfully kill me" is very sexy.

Great Pretender has also been interesting, we finished the arc about Cynthia's past which I absolutely loved (she's the best), and jumped from art forgery to ...child trafficking??!?!??!
I was NOT ready for that to be a heist. I'm not sure if our protagonists are the best group to handle a case like this, having innocent children among the victims feels very... tonally strange. We watched episodes 16 and 17 today, which revealed the involvement of Edamura's dad, and now I understand why Laurent decided to go for it, and why this story was added to the anime. I'm very curious to see where they'll go with it, luckily I don't have to worry about anyone too much here, since it would be against the spirit of the series.
Also wow, each new episode manages to push Laurent more and more into the asshole territory.

Today I continued with anime club anime after a long time and I'm a ball of worry and anxietyyyyyy
For a while now I've been thinking it won't end well for Franz and I don't want to see him hurt :( It's like I imprinted on him. He fits my favourite tropes and preferences exactly, from being the loyal childhood friend and trusted best friend, to the deliciously tragic gay pining that's always present, but in the background, to his acceptance of the situation, and dedication to support Albert regardless. I'm also drawn to characters who are the voice of reason, and willing to question things and put in the work to get some answers, but he's not overbearing with it and has a fun side too.
For the past, idk handfull of episodes?, my worries that the Count will kill him in some way have only gotten stronger. It's been painful and anxiety inducing to watch the episodes with that in the back of my head. We watched episode 17 today, titled "The Confession" where the Count reveals his scheming to Albert. First of all, ouch. Poor guy. Also the knife gets twisted when Franz sees how Albert is still yearning for the Count, and how he'll never hold the same place in his heart (what a love triangle) and then HOW ABOUT ALL THOSE DEATH FLAGS HE RAISED IN THIS EPISODE??!??!??!? From the letter Eugénie needs to deliver for him, to the carefree drinking and laughter of how Albert will beat the Count in the duel, to Franz getting up before him, THIS MAN WILL NOT SURVIVE ANOTHER EPISODE AND I'M NOT READY FOR HIM TO BE GONE

this post is not gonna be well put together but i am having feelings
mean girls is trending right now because the musical movie just came out and i feel insane. idk why i do, it was stupid of me to think that most people Got It, no one ever gets it, it was always about the memes and the aesthetic.
the first mean girls movie was based on a nonfiction book called queen bees and wannabes. it interviewed and discussed the social caste system in teen girl friendships. how they hold each other to these insane standards of heternormative femininity out of sheer terror that they won't meet those standards themselves. the way they leverage their relationships for some small degree of power in a world designed to strip them of it, even if it drags other girls down.
the "you can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week and on wednesdays we wear pink" speech was not an original creation for the script. it's a QUOTE from a real teenage girl. those were REAL RULES.
then the musical came, and it was one step removed from the intended messaging of the film. OG mean girls was not perfect (and was extremely racist), but it said what needed said. the musical leaned on the comedy more, but still left a heartfelt undertone, and still critiqued the systems in place. of course no piece of media is going to be perfect, but it was about the conversation.
then this new movie comes out and it is washed over in the veneer of white hollywood feminism so thick you can't see anymore. the problematic aspects of the original movie are taken out to avoid "offending" when the offense was the point. it becomes toothless, it becomes some other thing entirely. they changed karen's line "i expect to run the world in shoes i cannot walk in" to "watch me as i run the world in shoes i cannot walk in." because choice feminism is in vogue, suddenly this character whose entire point is that she doesn't think deeply about WHY she does anything is suddenly hip to the fact that the world is against her.
i think of sokka losing his misogyny arc in the new atla. i think of the Heathers remake casting the bitchy, identical heathers as queer and hollywood-fat outcasts. as if the story, the meaning, the allegory is hidden in the sets and the jokes and the music. it's a whole new thing now, and it's a thing that means nothing in particular.
the plastics should not wear jeans. they should not have curves. their queerness should be suppressed, painful. their sexuality is not a slay, it's the only thing they think they have of value. the santa dance isn't sexy, it's shocking, it's mortifying - they are children.
they're not mean because "we are all mean." they are mean because they are girls in a world that brutalizes them and crushes them into a standardized shape. they are mean because the world is mean to them. they are mean because it gives them some power back. they are mean because it's the only weapon they have.
the landscape of femininity today has shifted to camera-ready makeup at the age of 10, stringent performative hygiene standards, and avoiding being caught on film while having a genuine emotion. the consumerism, the fatphobia, the racism, the classism, the homophobia remain. We could have had a conversation about that.
