Suburbs are not the same as rural or “undeveloped”. Instead, the suburbs are (a lot of times) developed in the most economically inefficient way possible. They drain resources from the city, from the surrounding area, and they do so even at a cost to the people living there, who have to travel to ridiculous lengths just to get groceries.
The problem isn’t necessarily density (though it is part of it). The problem is mixed zoning. Having miles of single-family homes is economically unsustainable because there is no offset for the cost of maintaining the roads, sewers, and other public infrastructure that needs to keep expanding to serve those homes. Cities, and mixed zoning suburbs, are way more efficient. And the people who live there have an actual community, and places to interact with their neighbors nearby.
I live in the suburbs because I love having all of the forest preserve nearby - but making the housing more dense would only improve that. It would mean we take less space for manicured lawns, make more things available within a walkable distance for people, and allow them to run their businesses from nearer to their homes. And it would mean less endless sprawling of roads and parking lots and industrialized wastelands that serve no purpose beyond giving people who rely on cars space to keep it while they run errands.
The Staten Island Railroad needs to be expanded so that Staten Island can actually be densified to allow for the lowering of NYC rents because there is so much wasted space on that island, like it is just standard American suburbs on there and it could be so much better if we densified it. And density can be most easily allowed for by expanding transit

This is misinformation, and quite frankly, disrespectful. There’s enough valid criticism of Chicago police, and enough proof behind the Attourney’s Office’s murder of Fred Hampton, that we don’t need to lie and fabricate outrage in order to remember it and inform.
The grave is vandalized, but has been that way for a while, and they do not know who did it. There is no confirmation that it is police and there certainly is no reporting that it is a yearly ritual by local police. I was able to find a single Reddit thread claiming this, with zero evidence attached.
Don’t muddy the legacy of this with lies. Racism exists outside of the police too, and whoever did this deserves to reckon for it. But lying about the actions of police only makes it harder for the real criticisms to make a difference. Don’t add to the noise.
Appreciation to the poster above me for adding some actual info to this though. The original might be dishonest, but the context is spot on and deserves to be shared.

if you've seen that "voting as a fire extinguisher" poem around you should consider reading the full piece, "TO THROW A WRENCH IN THE BLOOD MACHINE: Five (Season-Appropriate) Metaphors for Voting." the author recently wrote an update talking about how he doesn't like the piece being taken out it's poetic context, where it isn't instructions on what to do but a "grappling with a complex idea, providing different possible doorways into critical thinking." also maybe check out his other work!

it was kind of fucked up for wall-e to be that way about fat people now that im thinking about it
#that last part is the first valid criticism I’ve seen lol#it wasn’t fatshaming#but it was absolutely pushing the idea that humans are inherently lazy and won’t be productive if they aren’t forced to#wall e#they could have done this movie and shown people accustomed to life on a ship and still being productive in their own ways#and gotten the same message across about entertainment providing distraction from problems and solutions#but that would have made the movie deeper than they wanted to go

The toadstools grew in a perfect ring the width of a child’s hula hoop.
They were upside down and clinging to the ceiling like stalactites.
“I have concerns,” she said.
“So do I,” they said. “If I step under it, does it count as stepping into a fairy circle? I mean, if a plane flies over a fairy circle it doesn’t count as stepping into it, but do the same rules apply if you’re walking under a fairy circle?”
“Right.”
“Actually, what is the area of effect for a fairy circle? Is it like a sphere that has the same circumference of the circle, so if I just duck underneath it I’ll be fine? Or is it a cylinder? How far up does the cylinder go? Or down, in this case.”
“Right.”
“Some of the many mysteries of the fey we may wonder about forever.”
They continued to stare up at the ring of toadstools. Thoughtful seconds ticked by.
“See, my concerns are mostly about how much moisture you have in your room.”
“Sorry?”
“You have mushrooms growing out of your ceiling.”
“Oh.”
She patted their back with sympathetic pity. “I appreciate that you live in a world of whimsy and delight, and I don’t want to squash that because I love you, but I also really don’t want you to die of black mold.”
“She’s right, you know,” said the goblin sitting upside down in the circle.

i think some of you guys are insane 👍 it's actually possible for a 16 year old to be online friends with someone in their 20s. source: teenagers are actually people who can talk to other people about shared interests.
#this is actually the reason I fought so hard against age limiting the writing site I help run#our community is 16+ but we had some 15 and 14 year olds#and yeah they could overshare#and yeah they were sometimes possibly annoying#but so was I at that age#and the adults that I wrote with and who accepted that were formative for who I am today#I’m not taking that community away from anyone#so we updated our content restrictions instead and tbh best decision we ever made#people can go elsewhere if they want to write explicit material#collaboration is about the community more than the pure expression at the end of the day
