History time! Welcome to Folly Beach! (It's the western tip of the 7-Mile Beach, and most secluded beach, near an abandoned lighthouse). At one time it was called "Coffin Island" (named after the Coffin Plantation owners--come on, Coffin Island sounds cooler). The beach hasn't had the best history, considering no one knows why the original inhabitants, the Bohicket tribe, just up and moved, especially when the land was deeded to William River in 1696 >.> (We know why) 🏴‍☠️ Or that in the pirate age, every ship departing and entering would be bombarded by Pirates (Blackbeard & Bonnet). Blackbeard had a home here (supposedly, because studies show he's actually from Goose Creek, SC). Or that rumors were that the bodies of the plague and cholera victims were dumped here (giving it the "coffin island" name. Or that Multiple battles including Civil War and bodies of the 55th regiment (based off of the movie Glory) were found here. Even a lighthouse built in the 1800's was decommissioned due to oceanic erosion. It's now just sitting abandoned, when Morris Island used to be it's own tiny city! History Time with Bucky! . The Angel Oak tree, much like, Charleston, has it's checkered and bitter history, so a (TW) if you don't want to read sad stories. The recorded history says it was on the land The Cussoe tribe used to inhabit. (Kusso and Natchez, who settled around the Edisto river--if anyone wants to Google) -- And a rep of Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper purchased the land from the Cussoe Indians in 1675. (This may be true, but I smell dirty politicians) 🏴‍☠️ 42 years later, the land became property of plantation owner Abraham Waight in 1717, (a seriously rich dude who owned multiple plantations) who eventually handed the property to Justus Angel, thus, the name of the tree was born. Angel Oak. (tw) Being on a plantation is cringe, the slaves who worked there considered the tree to be a bad omen, especially when vultures would sit atop the tallest branches to get their food. Multiple folks has sworn to see glowing apparitions around the tree, and angry, demon-like figures who protect it from harm. It's survived hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, land developers who wanted to put up condos, and the general cruelty of man for the past 500 years. (Some folks say the tree is protected because of the Indians and the loss of the folk who died there) This tall boi stands at 65 ft (19 meters) covers up to 17,000 square feet, and has about 40k visitors a year! Not bad for a tree! 🌳 Sadly, when we arrived, they were closing the park for the night, so we were very rushed and didn't get to embrace the beauty of this nature beast. History (sort of?) Post: @thegriffonpub is one of the spots we visited when everyone in our group was desperately thirsty and low-blood sugar-like hungry. (We're in the south, but we're not in the suffering humidity south, so we weren't used to all that smolder) It's right off the coast and a local hidden gem in Charleston. The Griffon is a local Irish pub, with all the charm of... an Irish Pub, with tons--and I mean probably $25k worth of $1. bills. Much like The Burger Bar in Bristol, TN, their establishment is wallpapered with $1 dollar bills, except these date back 20+ years, before it got new owners in 1996. It has your basic bar food, sandwiches and beer of all kinds, and a mix of tourists and locals. 🏴‍☠️I haven't found history on the building itself, other than it may have been built around 1806, way past the Golden Pirate Age. History Post! "The Pink House" is the 2nd oldest residence standing in Charleston. It's gone through a bevy of ownerships since the late 1600s until today, including a tavern, brothel, a law office, art gallery, and it's currently a private residence. (I didn't realize this when I took these photos--oops). It's original structure was built from 18" thick Coral stone, shipped from west India, which gave it a natural pink color (unlike Rainbow Row's Pastel). It's over 1,000 sq ft, has a courtyard and 1.5 bath, and 🏴‍☠️ Many witnesses said Blackbeard and his crew visited often (while it was a tavern/brothel). In Charleston, SC, there's a building with two marble steps that leads to the oldest liquor store in the US! Since 1686, it has been a store to only sell alcohol continuously. . When we arrived, staff gave out paper towels (Handler was drenched in sweat) and deodorant 😂 and then offered us a sample of the local Southern Pecan Bourbon. It was yummy, sweet and strong! We bought a bottle for celebration! .
