Drabble [Check-ups]

The sound of wooden door creaks open wide, followed by the clunking of the glass bottles as the box is settled on the floor "I brought you supplies, Anders" 

"Just leave it there" The blonde mage was just finished healing the last of his patients and looks up towards the voice, " I'll take care of it later, thank you--Oh Hawke! you don't have to."

"Don't worry about it" The woman with honey locks smiled " I just happened to bump into Lirene at the market. The poor lady, there seem to be not enough helpers so she has to run the errands herself. I was already on my way here looking for you so I decided to lend a hand."  

"Looking for me? Is there something you need?"

"Don't be silly, can't I check on a friend? Oh! I also brought some tea that Merril gave me a couple of days ago." Hawke holds up a small plain pouch. 

"I...um, thank you, Hawke"

"No no, thank you! Last time was a bit of a clutch, isn't it? I never doubt my brother's skills in battle, but sometimes his overconfidence and stubbornness can get to his head and didn't check his surroundings."

"That's what I'm there for" the healer grinned at Hawke, and earned a giggle in return.

"I had a friend like you once. Got in all kinds of trouble, dragged me along. Didn't think I'd be doing that again" Anders remembered Warden-Commander Cousland fondly back then, or perhaps she should be referred to as "Her Majesty" since she's also the Queen of Ferelden. Strange how that works; Young, passionate, gracious, fiercely loyal, 'and righteous', his spirit friend hums in the back of his head.  "I got a bit weighty the last time we talked. Sorry for putting that on you" "You'd be surprised how people just tell me their darkest secret. I must look trustworthy" she shrugged. 

"You look...something. True, Proud. Like even if you don't agree with me, you'll be honest. I just...I hope I didn't seem too selfish when I told you about Justice.” the mage rubbed his hand behind his neck “I didn't know what would happen. I figured a willing host, a friend...it had to be better than playing the demon and haunting some corpse" Furrowed brows knitted together, Anders couldn't help but feel a bit guilty for dumping this sort of information on her. 

Hawke tilted her head in a thoughtful manner, "We can't always predict the outcomes of our actions, We can only make them with a true heart." a knowing nod and a reassuring pat on the arm.

Anders never expected such gentle, warm, and most of all, understanding response, his heart blossom a little. "Kind, wise and beautiful. You must have made a deal with some demons, yourself" as soon as the words left his mouth Anders find himself in a blushing mess, scratching his own cheeks sheepishly.  " I'm sorry, I shouldn't presume. I just... we've hardly met and I feel like I know you...Am I making you uncomfortable?" 

Hawke blinked several times with a face of astonishment. 'Well done, Anders, well done. You have just stab yourself in the foot' Anders thought to himself. 

But then, she laughed ” Doesn’t mean I want you to stop” such crisp voice lightens the mage’s heart once more. 

“I’ll keep that in mind”

  "Growing up in the Circle, everything is about order and rules and the Templars." Anders huffed. He doesn't know why he is telling Hawke such intimate things and yet admittedly, there's an air about this woman in front of him that for whatever reason that made this usually anxious and overworked healer relax and trust her somehow. The words just come out so naturally  "The apprentices, we found ways to make that bearable. Karl and I, he was the first. We could forget that out in the world, we are nothing but the Templars' slave. We hadn't been together for a long time, but still, it hurts." 

"I'm sorry to hear that." 

"It's the bloody Templars!" Anders curls his fingers into a fist in frustration. "They don't see us as people. They don't care that Karl was someone's son, someone's lover." He can feel his rage intertwined with Justice...or perhaps it is 'Vengeance' now, boiling underneath the skin, biting every word as he speaks.  "If you are born with magic, they hear about it. They search your little rat bit village and find you. They tell your parents they'll be thrown in prison if they ever ask about you, stripped of their rights in the eyes of the Maker. And if you run away, they hunt you down, again and again, and ..." 

But then the mage noticed pools of water had gathered around the pair of stormy blue, glistening like crystals. The next moment, streamed down her rosy cheeks. Just like that, extinguishing any hint of anger within him. 

"You are....crying" Anders speaks softly. It warms and breaks his heart at the same time.

"Oh, I...I didn't notice haha" Hawke quickly wiping away the tears with the back of her hand. "I just…I can tell that Karl was more than just a friend when you have to… ‘give him peace’ ” she sighed, ”No one should have to go through that. I’m sorry."

“No, thank you. Hawke” for lamenting for a stranger.

Hawke’s expression was quickly replaced with a beaming smile, like a sun that appears from behind the clouds. “Well, would you like some tea?”

“Ah yes, sure. I suppose I could take a break. I’ll go and prepare the water” Anders promised to himself, and Justice: he would never want to make her cry again.

A/N: It's been sitting in my google doc for a while. Basically a bit of "rewrite" on one of the companion check-ups on Anders in Act 1. The second half of the dialogue was supposed to be like ‘exclusive’ to m!Hawke in-game. But fuck that, I can still see Anders telling this kind of information to my lavender (Purple/Blue) Hawke

They are not a pair; Anders did have a crush on Hawke for some time, but later eventually develops into more like sibling-like care.

Fur Coats

Say what you want about Ferelden ; mostly “blant-taste” food, practical wear or otherwise.

Orlesian dresses may be beautiful and extravagant but their fashion changes every season, it’s rather wasteful tbh. Most clothes might have not even been wore more than once (amongst the nobility, bc apparently the second time is a disgrace).

Ferelden with their more conservative culture, on the other hand, has simple yet most classic and elegant designs of fur coats in all of Thedas. Treated with care and reverence and are often family heirlooms that pass down in generations.

Commissioning for a new fur coat/cloak are often deem with much gravity and importance ; synchronising with it’s actual physical weight. Such as for War heroes & Veterans, performed a significant feat for the Crown and the people of Ferelden, and/or the Coming of Age birthday present for the heir(ess) to a noble family.

The gold &red fur cape used for royal coronations has existed since Calenhad and has been one of the most important relic in the Theirin line.

It’s interesting that you mentioned Anora and Maise have much in common;

Cordelia has a stronger foil with Loghain ; such as strong nationalism, loyalty and love towards their beloved Ferelden and the distain & distrust for foreigners (especially Orlesians) - which would also come into play regarding the consequences of Anders’s leave of the Warden later on.

So, since previous we were having discussion on Anora on another post; I’m curious, what are your HC regarding the Ferelden’s Dowager Queen post DAO?

(I’m assuming you mean for my playthrough here. If that’s not what you mean, please let me know and I’ll answer you properly)

My headcannon for post-Origins Anora:

Firstly, a fool could see that Anora is best suited in a position of power, able to use her talents for her country. Much to Eamon’s annoyance, she is named conditional heir to the throne, “conditionally” depending on the King and Queen not having children. If they did, Anora would be in line behind them. She is also granted her father’s Terynir, Gwaren, which is where most of her time is spent. She is a firm but fair Teryna, and her rule puts Gwaren well on the way of recovery from the Blight.

Although it was partially Maise’s intervention at the stand (and partially Alastair’s, prior to the battle of Denerim) that spared Anora from the executioner’s block, she and Maise are understandly icy towards each other for some time, but eventually come to form a mutual respect, possibly even a friendship. (As I’ve said in quite a few posts and reblogs, Anora and my Warden Maise Cousland -or anyone’s f!Cousland, really- have a lot in common, both personality-wise and in the way they were raised. Maise’s deposition of Anora had nothing to do with liking or disliking her, but rather a view of necessity). She wants little to do with Alistair, however. Especially since he reminds her so much of Cailan, which is painful.

During Inquisition, she communicates heavily with the palace. She was opposed to granting the Rebel mages sanctuary in Redcliffe, and was more than willing to point out her correctness when things went south. Even with the mages being spirited away to Skyhold, Anora remained on guard, and did her best to keep the peace in Gwaren. What does the future hold for Anora? We’ll see, when #TheDreadWolfRises

Mutual pining is delicious but recently I've been very into a variant, mutual pining where they both know the other one loves them but some very valid noble reason keeps them apart (like a sacred job or the timing is so bad right now, not like a spouse) but they both know they'd be together if circumstances were different but they aren't and there's nothing either of them can do about that except....maybe.......what used to be So Important that they had to stay apart starts to seem not as important anymore.......but what if the impossiblity of being together was the appeal for both of them in the first place because neither knows what to do with a romantic relationship and they'd only disappoint the other person if they actually got together......it's better to stay as they are rather than risk everything in their life for the chance of something more.....and yet

Ideally these characters come Very Close to having honest good communication together but something remains unsaid, always unspoken, and also there's a LOT of tense handtouching

3 facts about Euryphaessa “Thea” Hawke: 1) has a habit of stress eating but never seems to gain much weight, most likely converted into mana. 2) Extremely patience person, slow to anger & jokes a lot but when reaches to boiling point, her hair would levitate (looks like floating in water) & air in 5ft radius feels like sub-zero, due to emotion-magic overflow. 3) she has 1/4 elven blood; Malcolm is elf-blooded from his father side, Thea’s great-grandparents are escaped elven slaves from Tevinter

I did read what OP said, as well as other people’s reblog.

Alistair/Cousland pairing is my own main canon but they are besides the point. Even if my OC is not romancing Alistair, most of the time (but not all the time) I would still likely have Alistair on the throne; Anora is an exceptional candidate and excellent character of her own but it is more to do with simply my OC(s) often comes to the conclusion they know about Alistair’s character in person more than Anora. (While joined rule between Anora & Alistair is an option, I personally just don’t have the heart to so)

I was just expressing using my own canon as example that I feel there are alternatives for Anora to remain active in Court and use her brilliant mind to have an impact in Ferelden for the better even she’s not the ruling Monarch. (I am quite disappointed we did not hear more of Anora in the later games as if she disappeared into obscurity unless she’s the [one of] the ruling monarch.)

I don’t dislike Anora at all. I think she is a wonderful and intelligent woman. Though my reasoning of putting Alistair and my Cousland on the Ferelden Throne is quite very similar to @herhighness-thequeenofhearts

Still, regardless one might think about Anora and her father Loghain Mac Tir. Legally speaking the Dowager Queen Anora would still be the heir to the Terynir of Gwaren, if she’s willing to take it.

Personally I think Anora would make an excellent Chancellor to the ruling monarchs. (At least that’s what I HC in my own Canon, in which Alistair & Cousland invites her back to Court after some years of Anora being under house arrest in her own maison back in Gwaren) Bc tbh after knowing how Eamon and especially Isolde treated Alistair in his childhood. My Cousland doesn’t really trust Eamon and have arguments with the (former) Arl of Redcliffe several times at Court

on the one hand i adore how fleshed out the backstories for all the dragon age origins.... origins are, but it's also hilarious that the mage origins got shafted. cause yeah, you get the tower stuff, but like. amell is only retroactively confirmed to be related to hawke, with supplemental information adding information about their mom etc etc, but fuckin surana is just a great big question mark and i think that's hilariously beautiful
