On 11th august 1492 Rodrigo Borgia was elected Pope Alexander VI. with the help of cardinal Ascanio Sforza
The actions inside the Sixtina during the conclave of 1492 remain a secret even by now. But from the few information we have, this can be said for sure: If we look at the first three ballots, the only ones we have knowledge of, there were obviously two different parties: The leader of the first was Giuliano della Rovere while Ascanio Sforza lead the other one. Ascanio himself, even though an influential cardinal with a lot of competence, was too young to be elected. When his main candidate Oliviero Carafa was still not able to enforce by day five of the conclave, Ascanio had to look for another candidate. Rodrigo had already gained four votes from the rivalry party – five if Raffaele Riario Sansoni could be won for their side as well. Most importantly, there was also a thing only Rodrigo could give to Ascanio: the post of the Vice Chancellor which he himself occupied by that time. The chronist Stephano Infessura noted in his diary that Rodrigo sent in addition to the offer of that post four mules stowed with silver to Ascanio’s palace to buy his support. If this is true or not is unknown, as well as the location the two negotiated (agreements bargained on the toilet are actually documented for medieval times). It is however a fact, that Ascanio gained indeed the post of the Vice Chancellor, also Rodrigo’s own palace and the profitable archdiocese Eger. Later, the marriage between Lucrezia Borgia and Giovanni Sforza was arranged as well. To get Rodrigo elected, the two cardinals were buying the necessary votes in the night from the 10th to 11th august. The benefits that were sold at that night all belonged to Rodrigo from which he had gained a lot through his time as a cardinal in Rome. They were successful and therefore able to buy almost all of Giuliano’s party followers. It is said that in the last ballot, on the morning of the 11th august, Rodrigo was elected unanimous. It is most likely that Giuliano and his left fellows joined the election in accessus. Even though the relationship of Ascanio and Rodrigo was neither close nor unproblematic, Rodrigo stated later, that his election was only possible with Ascanio’s help.

[Where will you dwell for eternity? Elysium?] -When you are alive, you can either be fully alive or half alive. When you are dead, you are completely and unalterably dead. I will be nowhere.
