Katsuki lays on that little hospital bed like he has for weeks, the machines a loud buzz in the quiet of the night, the lamp above them dimmed but bright enough for the nurses as they make their rounds. Inko is laid out in the cot adjacent, her worn, thinning face still twisted in anguish even as she sleeps, still in her day clothes with a blanket tossed over her shoulders.
In his arms, Deku rests fitfully, his breaths uneven and laborious. His hair tickles Katsuki’s neck where Deku’s head is tucked under Katsuki’s chin, the two of them turned close to each other, Deku pulled tight against his chest.
And Katsuki doesn’t sleep, his eyes tiredly glued to the way the heart monitor jumps, vigilantly keeping watch.
Sometimes there’s a skip, the line flat for a single second, and Katsuki’s breath catches in his throat every time, before it starts again, Deku’s dry coughing filling the room. Inko jerks up every time, eyes wild and frantic, but Katsuki shakes his head at her, and she lays back down again with tears in her eyes.
But she falls back asleep regardless, exhausted. Deku barely stirs.
Running his fingers through Deku’s curls, Katsuki waits, and he doesn’t give up, like everyone else seems to. Like Deku has seemed to. He doesn’t want to live this life, a hero’s life, without Deku. He hasn’t for a long, long time. And, even if everyone is bracing for the worst, even if Deku is trying to give him that damned amazing quirk, Katsuki isn’t going to be alone.
Because Deku’s going to live for a long, long time.
Katsuki swallows, his throat tight, steeling himself. “Izuku,” he whispers. His voice is croaky, and he hates that, how vulnerable he is, but for Deku…
“Kacchan?” Deku slurs, shifting ever so slightly. He tilts his head back to glimpse Katsuki’s face, his eyes tired but smiling. A slow grin stretches his haggard face, and Katsuki hates how much it almost reminds him of All Might. “Did you say my name?” he whispers as if in awe.
“Izuku,” Katsuki repeats, just to see that smile widen a little more, green eyes shining.
“You haven’t called me that in so long,” he says, a hand coming up to rest on Katsuki’s collarbone, his thin fingers mindlessly tracing along his shoulder. There’s a pain in Katsuki’s chest, his skin pebbling under his shirt where Deku’s touch leaves a warm trail.
“Yeah, it’s been a while,” Katsuki croaks. He clears his throat, and shifts a little way so he can see Izuku clearly, still cradled in one arm.
Deku is so small now, so thin and frail, and he looks so, so tiny against Katsuki’s side. Katsuki hates that, too.
“I got a question for you.”
Deku hums, his eyes closing and his head already listing to the side, lolling against Katsuki’s shoulder, drifting away again.
“Will you marry me?”
He can feel the hitch in Deku’s breath, but Deku doesn’t cough. He opens his eyes slowly, and despite the haze of pain, he stares at Katsuki with sharp clarity. And Katsuki waits, a fist around his heart to match the cage trapping Deku’s. It’s a long, long moment before Deku moves again, his hand moving up to press against the side of Katsuki’s face, cupping his cheek.
“Why?” he asks, his voice too quiet in an already too quiet room.
Katsuki doesn’t let himself hesitate, not on these words he’s been holding back.
“Because I love you.”
And Deku smiles again, and it’s different, soft and sweet on the edges, and Katsuki knows it’s a smile that has only ever been meant for him.
