Oh, it was that kind of meeting.
Sorry.
I'm back from the meeting. I need some time to think

Tumblr media
Can you just imagine if you stepped into a puddle to find no ground beneath it? If there was an undertow that pulled you under, sunk you into a cavernous, flooded tunnel, and pushed you past where you could reach the surface again? The tunnels get tighter and tighter, the current faster and stronger as the earth itself pulls you into an embrace that will swallow you whole. How long would your air last, I wonder, in those conditions. Or maybe you would give in to the waters, and never have to worry about air again.

I don’t think my lack of breathing is helping with the Angie situation. Luckily I’m picking Charlotte up today, so I should be able to stay with her for a bit.

I can only imagine. Time for take two of trying to talk some sense into her.
Can someone tell me why I came back from my walk to find Angie curled up in a corner, covered in blue rocks, and muttering about “fake tumblr people”?

Uh-huh. I’ll add it to my list of names to sort through.
Angie got officially discharged from the hospital today. The good news is that she says I can stay with her for a bit. The bad news is she’s still convinced that she’s the only real human being in existence so. Mixed bag.
Since she thinks I’m not real, it’s proving hard to figure out what fear this could be. Sometimes it seems like the isolated and abandoned feeling from my dream in the foggy London street, but the way she interacts with other people sometimes… It’s the same way I would have reacted to those jittering mannequins if they were trying a little harder to seem human.

Any news on how Charlotte is doing?
Still recovering. Dr. Lock says she should be good to leave as soon as later today. I don’t know enough about medicine to have my own opinion on it.
Brief conversation with one of the guys who was in the book, and he didn’t seem to have any of that existential nihilism that Charlotte did from it, so on the paranormal side of things, I don’t think that book has lingering effects—maybe because people aren’t expected to be able to escape.

I meant a practical difference. Regardless of if she’s under the impression that she’s a brain in a vat, or thinks that everyone else is existing without a qualia, it’s the same behavior.
The Stranger… I’ll write that down.

Well, since reading those Kirk papers with the Leitner plate, Angie has taken on solipsistic tendencies—that’s with the philosophical definition, mind you, so I don’t just mean “selfish.” I mean her behavior implies she genuinely believes other people are not real. (This isn’t even the point of those papers, which were meant as a refutal of physicalism, but I digress.)
Other people are reading it as rude, but I think she’s scared. The way she’s been looking at everyone, even at me, it’s like… well I’m not sure how to describe it.
I managed to get her to stop being physically violent at least, just by talking her through with “if other people aren’t real, then attacking them isn't going to do anything." Honestly, I’ve never understood the point of solipsism because even if it is true, there’s not any reasonable way to accordingly adjust your behavior, so I may need to do some more reading to figure out a good way to argue this.
