Hey, @viscountessevie, I just wanted to ask... a while back you had sent me a wonderful ask inquiring what I would change about HWGA, and I just wanted to ask... is a 10k response too long?

You know what, let’s take a moment to thank Mamma Mia! for being unproblematic in the sense that three older men meet and bond with this young, beautiful girl, and there’s not an ounce of ick or interest on any of their parts other than instinctively becoming her dads. ❤️

Benny Andersson: Part of the reason Mamma Mia! works so well is because the songs are all familiar. I personally think the first Mamma Mia! is really good. The music in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is good, but I’m not so keen on that story because there was no story, and there was no Catherine Johnson. X

I don’t know how I missed this, but this is a good post indeed.

Mamma Mia things I think about all the time:

- The implication that Fernando is Donna’s father and that both Meryl Streep and Lily James were playing a half Cuban

- How they used some of the guitar and piano solos from Abba’s live performances as background music

- How Harry ends up alone and should have really gotten with Bill. With the way they’re touching all the time? Come on! and they’re the only one’s looking at each other on the poster instead facing forward

- The random religion swapping with no explanation. Like they mention something about Catholic guilt and her mom, which makes sense because her mom spent time in Mexico I suppose which I guess is why they have a Catholic? priest, but then in the next movie they appear to remember that they’re in Greece and swap to a Greek Orthodox one but if that man is Greek I’m a monkey’s uncle. I was raised Greek Orthodox and that is the least hairy orthodox priest I’ve ever seen, greek or no. At least give him a beard. And he’s missing half of his costume pieces

- Speaking of which, they should have stuck with the Catholic if they weren’t going to do a Greek Orthodox baptism because no one was running around in circles or spitting and I demand authenticity at least in these aspects

- the use of Hasta Manana in Mamma Mia 2

- Look Stellan Skarsgard says kissing Julie Walters hurts his back because she’s so short. It makes far more sense for him to kiss someone more his height, say, I don’t know, someone he danced with, someone he did the Titantic move with, someone who he tied up on a pier, someone who he can be… spontaneous with, you feel me?

- Given that we’ve established the Latin American conection, what with Mexico and Fernando etc. I’m thinking if we get a Mamma Mia 3, they should throw in some of the Spanish versions. Please. I need it. They’re brilliant. 

- Speaking of which, I don’t know how they’d do it but I need If it Wasn’t For the Nights in there

Watching Mamma Mia now that I’m older, I can now say with absolute certainty: Harry so had a crush on Bill.

Two things-

The fact that the second movie robbed us of the dynamic between these four is still beyond criminal.

Can the world please give us these moments in better resolution.

Once the cast was all set, Johnson made some changes to the script to make sure it served each actor. Spending time around the cast and getting to know them gave her a better idea of how far they would go in their performances. For instance, she wrote a scene in which Bill Anderson — one of Donna's former beaus, played by Stellan Skarsgård — is in a towel and flaunts his bare butt.

"I thought, 'He won't mind getting naked.' And I felt quite confident that if I put that in for Bill, Stellan would be up for it," Johnson said, adding, "Spending time with them very much informed what I was writing." x

Okaaaaaay, but with that logic, Harry/Colin got involved in that scene how? 🤔 😉

Apparently now is the time to find a way to contact Judy Craymer and beg her to make the dads as gay as possible - or at least give them something to do in the third film that she's in the early stages of developping...

Ahhh, right you are, dear anon! I sometimes kick myself for ending a relationship a few years back that had a slight bit of a connection to Judy Cramer through the said person I was in a relationship with, as it’s fun to pretend that would have given me any sort of ground to be like “OH HI, CAN YOU MAKE BILL AND HARRY A THING.” 🤣

I digress, but yes, I wish there was a way to successfully get the message across to Judy that we need the gay dads. In reality, in knowing the likelihood of them going down that path is tragically low, I agree, I wish fans could collectively let it be known we just want the legacy cast to have center stage this time. (Please, not Ruby and Fernando, PLEASE.)

We waited 10 years for the first sequel, how many more for the third installment if it ever comes to pass, and I will forever complain that the original cast (sans Amanda to an extent) were horrifically underused in HWGA, and the plot re: the characters were… insulting at times, infuriating at others. When I saw Judy claim she knew there was a way to bring Meryl back, it’s just like, yeah, duh, you had better, because killing off *THE* Mamma in the Mamma Mia franchise, in such a careless way needs to be rectified. (Although who wants to take bets now it could possibly be another flashback film where this time we actually get to see Donna’s demise. I actually think that would be the best way to go about it, because they did such a huge plot point so haphazardly in HWGA, it’s flummoxing. Like Donna was just some throw away character you could just be like “she died a year ago.” and have that be okay. They have to fix that, right?) Actually anon, that reminds me, I have a whole rant about that article saved, which I should post and not turn this response into a rant. For now I will say, let what made the first film work so well in the first place actually get the care it deserves, in what, if it really happens, would realistically be the final installment… and give us gay dads. 😏

In short, I try to temper my expectations, because I know how the world works when it comes to big movies and the community, and in the grand scheme of things it seems most people just don’t see Bill and Harry as a serious possible paring, but darn, if any of you know to make the potential seen by the higher ups that be, GODSPEED AND PROSPER. Or at least please let them know to do better by the “legacy cast.”. And if you need to spam my blog 10,000 times, I give you permission because I swear, sometimes I make persuasive arguments. If not, you guys, please tell me to shut up and stop making a fool of myself. 🤣)
