as far as i know, there was this virus (The Flood) that was released by the Angels (the christian death cult) to either kill everyone or turn them into monsters. the virus has the power to shift someone’s bone structure and muscles to make them into the twisted creatures we see in the book. if you get infected, you either die a painful death or are left in a state between living and dying in which you turn into a monster. multiple people that have been turned into monsters, especially if they were together when they “died”, can merge into a bigger monster. (we see this at the church). hope this helped!

just finished song of achilles
it was pretty good i guess. i enjoyed most of it, especially the end, but i do have some complaints- largely, the ones surrounding the representation of patroclus’s sexuality and gender roles in their relationship.
the author seems to have this sort of attitude that there needs to be a feminine one and a masculine one in the relationship, even though they are gay. it is as if she is trying to have one of them be the “woman” and one of them be the “man”. just because one is gay does not mean they cannot enjoy masculine things. this shows itself with patroclus. he and achilles are supposed to be equals in a sense, and yet he is designated to the role of the sidekick- the “woman”. he practices medicine instead of fighting and seems to need achilles in order to do anything. i disliked this aspect of his character strongly, especially in the last half of the book.
another thing that bothered me pretty massively was the sex scenes between patroclus and women in the book. the author goes above and beyond to show that he does not enjoy it. in that case, why include it? why was it necessary? did we really need to know that patroclus slept with achilles’s wife and didn’t like it that much? you don’t need to prove he’s gay by having him hate having sex with women.
overall, though, it was fine. i do love some good (or at least decent) representation, especially in genres that aren’t just ‘modern day coming of age’, and this fulfilled that. the plot was fine, the characters rich and for the most part likeable, and the nitpicks i have didn’t really affect my experience too much. (except for the women sex scenes. just why?)
i rate the song of achilles a 7/10, with minus 2 points for the bad representation and some frankly uncomfortable sex scenes.
