Writing about a child rapist did not make Vladimir Nabokov a child rapist.
Writing about an authoritarian theocracy did not make Margaret Atwood an authoritarian theocrat.
Writing about adultery did not make Leo Tolstoy an adulterer.
Writing about a ghost did not make Toni Morrison a ghost.
Writing about a murderer did not make Fyodor Dostoevsky a murderer.
Writing about a teenage addict did not make Isabel Allende a teenage addict.
Writing about dragons and ice zombies did not make George R.R. Martin either of those things.
Writing about rich heiresses, socially awkward bachelors, and cougar widows did not make Jane Austen any of those things.
Writing about people who can control earthquakes did not make N.K. Jemisin able to control earthquakes.
Writing about your favorite characters and/or ships in situations that you choose does not make you a bad person.
It’s a shame that in this day and age these things need to be said.

Now feels like a brilliant time to bring up how much I adore the book Lolita, The Lives of the Mayfair Witches series and Anne Rice’s bi genre redefining Vampire Chronicles, and like the late great Octavia Butler and Anne Rice, how few fucks I give about people who clearly don’t understand queer history. Also, ily kinksters and ‘weirdos’ (platonically), let’s be friends!! 🥺

Genuinely 90% of historical fiction would be so much better if more writers could get more comfortable with the fact that to create a good story set in a different time period you do actually have to give the characters beliefs & values which reflect that time period

( ‘why do you hate black people?’
For pointing out that every founding father save for Adam’s and Tallmadge owned people and it was deemed normal at the time? Sounds like anon can’t read. My first gf and best friends ever were black people. Above is a list of the slaves Washington brought with him to Philadelphia a city which in theory abolished slavery during the war. Say their names and stand with Haiti, Sudan, Congo and Palestine and against all manner of censorship and against nationalism and white supremacy and then anon we can talk.
Also not gentle reminder that: I’m brown and the English enacted violence and slavery on my people for 50+ years after they ‘abolished’ slavery on the English mainland so crackers in my inbox best shut up and stop pretending they know shit about racism. )

( an anonymous on my personal tumblr rather rudely asked me what I thought of including slavery as an aspect of your Amrev RP. )
( Answer: don’t like: don’t read! )
( It’s not my business, in any capacity, but to police anyone’s fiction writing is authoritarian and everything I hate. I wouldn’t personally do it and it’s one of my personal icks but if it’s tagged properly I can merely block the tag or the thread, condemning real people over historical fiction is childish and authoritarian by definition. So, to be blunt, anon fuck off. You wouldn’t survive my ancien regime x vampires x smut x abuse of clergy/catholic/church/historically accurate divine right of kings and the 18th century 1% and nobles born into their respective privileges and other powers x French Revolution wip. )
( also I’m not a girl (that is misgendering) I’m a nasty bi genderqueer and the kinky quaintrelle gray ace your parents said to avoid, you should be afraid of me. Also I’m brown and fiction isn’t activism. 🤷‍♀️ )
( also to assert anyone’s fiction should be censored is parroting Hayes Code and a great way to expose your fascism and discredit yourself. )

all these guys are acting shady, the AmRev ladies are the ones holding it down
False: we’re all terrible by the standards of your times, we of the fairer sex simply look better in our being objectionable.

Could you guys IMAGINE if Ben Tallmadge, preacher’s son supreme, found this out? I can hear the scream coming from New Windsor as I write this
