Whether you be cruising or chilling through the day or night, UMYS has the soul sorted and the mind elevated with his truly diverse array of beats.
Adding a layer of vibrations and sonic sounds to hip hop classics old and new and experimenting beyond genres, UMYS is one of those musical brains that one really shouldn't miss as his music sets moods not to mention emotions beyond expectations.
Bringing together stress relief in the form of his beat-tapes, chill flips vol.1 and 2, both released last year in July and August. Then add to the mix his new years day phonk blessing - Phonk Nights Vol. 1, a collaborative 7 track beat-tape with sr.sn - fellow North Carolina native, friend, and musical vision, and you just can't go wrong, as UMYS provides a catalog for any situation that requires some bounce or a burst of creativity.
A true gem of the production world and appreciator of fellow creators, UMYS presents quality, and with that enjoy our words with the North Carolina beat-smith, making moves and shifting boundaries within music.

Your go-to artist when you were 15: A$AP Rocky

What you love about your hometown: The people, all my very best friends are from my hometown and I always love going back home to see everyone.
Tumblr media
Thanks for that Warren aka UMYS (pronounced YOU-MISS). I'd like to start by asking, what inspired you to start producing in the first place?
Did you have any help or musical experience before you began producing? When did you start experimenting with beat-making? And also what keeps you producing in the present?
I started producing when I was 16 years old. One of my hometown best friends, linanthem, used to come over to my house during the summers and work on beats in my living room and watching him work was so inspirational.
Pretty early on in our friendship he helped me learn FL Studio and I started off making shitty trap beats no one would ever rap on hahaha. I took some guitar lessons early on in life but basketball took over my life until I was about 18 and then that’s when I started making beats every day.
My passion for music keeps me sitting at my computer every single day trying to learn and experiment with new sounds.
You're from a small town Wendell in North Carolina, small-town vibes here for me too. How do you feel being from a small town benefits you as a creator?
Does your community effect the music you make at all? What do you feel are some cons to making music in a small town?
Being from a small town as a creator definitely has its pros and cons. Some of the pros being I’m a well-known name in my hometown but some of the cons are the lack of connections that can be made.
Luckily, Wendell is just outside of Raleigh which is a really big city so that allowed me to dive into that scene as well and make a lot of connections throughout the 919.
The community around me most definitely inspires me. When I hear something I like, I’m instantly inspired to hop on my computer and make something with a similar vibe to whatever I just heard.
What is the North Carolina music scene like and how do you feel your music fits into the mix? Can you share a few of your favourite artists coming out of North Carolina?
What do you feel creatives are doing right there and also what places would you recommend our readers check out if they're ever in the area?
Where do I even start hahaha. The music scene in North Carolina seems to be growing every single day and the really cool part about it to me is we all seem to have our own unique sound.
Some of my favorite artists in NC are, Maasho, Sonny Miles, Dot Wav, Felix Wood and Curtis Waters.
My favorite producers are the homies of course, GMO, sr.sn., linanthem, primoux, B4 and MFM. I feel like all the creators around here know each other and we are all friends and/or mutual friends.
All the musicians I’ve met in NC have been nothing but nice and ready to work. If you’re ever in North Carolina, you should definitely check out Raleigh. There are WAY too many amazing places to eat.
Tumblr media
Back onto your music, I've raided your Bandcamp, and honestly so much goodness there, I'd like to talk about your three tapes available on Bandcamp separately, but the first one I'd like to have a chat about is your July 4th, 2020, 13 track release "chill flips vol.1"
This is a true gem of a release, thank you for making these beats that just take you to another world of listening, much respect. Chilled and healing samples and flips of the likes of Danny Brown, Playboi Carti, Eazy E, Lil Wanye, Marvin Gaye, Kendrick Lamar, Tupac, and more, you take listeners on an elevated journey, much love.
What was "chill flips vol.1" like for you to create and what do you enjoy about this tape overall? Being your first beat-tape, can you share what inspired each track from this release and what you personally enjoyed about each track?
This is definitely one of my personal favorite projects but one of my least known. I never got too into Bandcamp but wanted to put a tape up there which is why I released chill flips as an exclusive on bandcamp.
chill flips vol. 1
a milli (flip) - I love this track so much. I feel like this really sets the tone for the rest of the tape and allows you to relax and get comfortable for what’s ahead.
J0000008.WAV – This was actually the first beat I made using my SP-404sx. It was a little bit of an experiment but turned out so well.
die like a rockstar (flip) – This beat is inspired by the producer stxn.x. The chops in the song were made by him. Definitely one of my personal favorites on this tape.
i was in a really good mood when i made this – This beat is a real feel good beat. I definitely made this in a really good mood hahaha.
a damn shame – Some more inspiration from my man stxn.x with his smooth drums
can't relate bro – This is probably my favorite flip I have ever made hahaha. What’s better than Playboi Carti on a smooth lofi beat.
fast cars, bad b*tches, and designer clothes – Lil Pump but it’s lofi LMAO
i'm not mad – This one was a fun one to make. Extremely simple beat but so chill.
backseat freestyle (flip) – The keys on this track really bring it together. Definitely one of the more chill ones on the tape.
i'm on a diet_ - This was one of my first flips to really pop off on Soundcloud so this one is a special track to me.
tomato salad – I actually made this beat for a Kenny Beat’s Beat Battle and it came in 5th place. I liked it a lot and thought it was a good vibe to add to the tape
thug 4 life – I honestly really just wanted to make a Tupac flip on this tape and this is what came out.
high school – This is another early one to pop off for me. Such a simple yet beautiful flip.

Tumblr media
You followed up chill flips vol.1 within a couple of months with chill flips vol.2 released on the 8th of August 2020, and for sure this release is another blessing to the ears. Blending old with new, words, samples, and bass-lines like a natural, this release is a solid ode to those you flip much respect.
I've enjoyed chill flips vol. 1 and 2 in various environments and for me vol.2 is perfect for mornings to motivate your day, your plays on tracks by Migos, Playboi Carti, Nas, Barry White, and more is beyond refreshing, thank you for this release.
What inspired you to release chill flips vol.1 and 2 reasonably close together? Also, what did you enjoy about putting this slightly shorter beat tape together? Do you have a favourite from the mix? If so share your favourite and why it appeals to you the most?
Also, have to ask on your track "wow" who did you sample in the beginning? Her vocals add so much to this beautiful Post Malone flip.
You have a gift with that btw, by blending samples to create a unique journey. How do you come up with these little blended treats? Is there some sort of process you follow with these particular tracks?
Link to chill flips vol.2 here -
https://umys.bandcamp.com/album/chill-flips-vol-2
Honestly Chill Flips Vol.1 and 2 dropped closely together because I was just really excited about them hahaha. My favorite from the two is either Can’t Relate Bro or Cheese in my Pockets.
Both of those are 2 of my favorites till this day. I liked the facts Chill Flips vol. 2 is shorter making it easy to sit down and listen to from start to finish and I feel there’s never a dull moment on that tape.
The track wow actually got me a strike on Soundcloud because of the Post Malone vocals hahaha. The vocals at the intro were actually from Splice and it just seemed like the perfect intro.
Thank you so much for the kind words about my sampling. I honestly just go through a lot of trial and error and stick with what sounds best. I try to not overthink in the process of making music.
It’s supposed to be fun and I don’t want to ever make it not fun by getting frustrated. If I get stuck, I move on to another beat and come back to it later and try again.
Tumblr media
Thanks so much for your insight so far, it's much-respected, your solo releases have a lot to offer, variety, and mood with each play, thanks again for what you're doing creatively.
Something you also showcase through your SoundCloud and Bandcamp is your ability to collab with taste and precision. I'm referring to your January 1st, 2021 collab release "Phonk Nights Vol. 1" that you co-produced with Raleigh, North Carolina producer talent and best friend of yours sr.sn.
"Phonk Nights Vol. 1" has to be one of the best releases of this year and you and sr.sn worked brilliantly together on it. I get the feeling things are really natural when you work together is that true?
How did you two meet and what inspires you to collab with sr.sn often?
You've collaborated before this beat-tape was released, beautiful works as well. What was it like working on a whole tape together compared to single releases? And what made you both want to release a Phonk tape?
Can you share your favourite track from "Phonk Nights Vol. 1"? Also, can you give us a run-through of what inspired each track from the release and what you enjoyed about creating each one?
I am so glad you enjoyed it so much. We had such a good time making it. sr.sn and I met in our early years of high school because we had a class together. It seems like after that we just became best friends. I don’t think either of us could tell you exactly how we became best friends, we just did. Ian is really easy to
work with because we both have our own sounds, but they blend together so nicely. It’s not like that with everyone but Ian and I have a whole folder of beats that are just great. The story behind Phonk Nights is actually really cool. We made the whole entire tape from December 22nd-28th and then released it on New Years so it was an extremely quick process. We play video games together almost every night and on the 22nd we were in discord and we made Wocky Slush. After that, we kept making 1-2 tracks a night and I think the only day we took off was Christmas Day. Then, all of the sudden we had 7 really solid tracks and wanted to just throw them on a tape. So that’s how Phonk Nights happened.
Tumblr media
Phonk Nights Vol. 1
Sum Expensive w/ sr.sn – This sample just seemed like the perfect sample to have as an opener. This track really sets the tone with a really smooth and mellow start followed by a hard drop.
Wocky Slush w/ sr.sn – This was the first track we made for Phonk Nights. We also released it as a single and this was around the time that wocky slush Tik Tok went viral and we both thought that video was hilarious.
Ghost Ridin' w/ sr.sn – Probably my personal favorite on this tape, the vocals and the beat just match up so well. This track is a vibe and has a real nice bounce to it.
Pop a Perc w/ sr.sn – This track was one of our first phonk collaborations and definitely a fan favorite from our collabs.
That's How All my Partners Roll w/ sr.sn – This one was such a quick cook up and just resulted in perfection. A very simple melody with some hard 808s, you can’t go wrong with that.
I Get da Bag w/ sr.sn – One of my favorite samples on the tape. Switched the vocals around a few times on this one and finalized it with some Gucci hahaha.
Splashin' w/ sr.sn – We were both so excited about this one. It’s the perfect closer to the tape.

I'm honored to mention you've also put together a blessed mix of moods and sounds for the beatsfortheill Soundcloud - "UMYS & the Homies Beatsfortheill Mix"
It is compiled with tracks by yourself and your best friends which makes it that little bit more special. Tracks by the likes of sr.sn, linanthem, sleepdealer, fk linny, GMO, and B4 all talented in their own right but blended together, you get a listening delight and story thanks to your mixing on this favourite for myself, thank you.
Firstly, can you give us a paragraph about what inspired this mix and what you tried to create with it?
How did you feel while you were making it? And finally, what do the people mean to you that you feature in the mix? And how important is it to have good friends around you while you create?
I have been so excited to talk about this mix. I had such a great time making it. The concept behind the mix is it’s only my real-life friends who also produce.
I take so much pride in how amazing my friends are at making music. They all inspire me every single day. I love these guys and would take a bullet for any of them. I always love having people around when creating.
It’s really fun to be in an environment doing what you love with people that you love.

Here at beatsfortheill, we have a love for various forms of art.
Can you recommend a few artists from different fields that you think our readers would appreciate? if you can link them even better. What do you enjoy most about their work?
I am a huge fan of Rude Manners and all of his work musically and artistically. His socials are @rudemanners and his art account is @daltonmannerud.
He’s a super genuine guy and has done some of my artwork for me. Definitely be sure to tune into everything he’s doing.
Also, a really good friend of mine and the best photographer I know, Giulio Giannini. His Instagram is @giulio.rose.giannini and you should definitely go check out his shots.
He has done a handful of shoots with myself and other upcoming artist and producers out of Raleigh and is a really good guy. Not to mention he’s a great architect with some wicked designs. Please be sure to check my man out!
Musical Recommendations?
Anything by bsterthegawd, Lil Gotit, Wifi Gawd, LO$ER, DJ Yung Vamp, and Swum have been heavy in my personal music rotation lately.
How important do you think downtime is for creatives? When you take a break from music, what do you like to do to recuperate and replenish? Also, do you have any other interests away from music that helps you when it comes to creating a track?
I think that giving yourself some downtime is extremely important. Sometimes when you just lock in and over work yourself, your mixes may start sounding sloppy and just little details you may just skip over them.
It’s good to do stuff to refresh your brain and give it a break. Personally I use video games, basketball, and quality time with my friends as breaks from that creative mindset.
I really love movies so I often include iconic movie scenes and quotes in the intros and background in some of my beats.
Do your family know you make music? If not, why? If yes, are they supportive? Has your upbringing influenced the music you make at all?
What about your upbringing (ideas, traditions, etc) have you carried with you through to adulthood?
Yes! My family has been nothing but supportive which is awesome.
My dad calls me every day and always asks how things with music are going. I wasn’t really raised in a musical household, so I didn’t really have any inside influences when it comes to music.
But I do share the same values and traditions with my family and spend almost every holiday with them. I remain very close with my family and family is something that has always been important to me.
Back to your music, it must be mentioned, your latest EP release "Changes" which came out via Kindbrew Records on March the 5th of this year. It's got that lazy Sunday kind of vibe, smoothed through with jazzy vibes all round, love this release, much respect.
You've worked with Kindbrew Records in the past with your single City Lights which was officially released later through Changes. It's a soulful retreat by yourself, the single, and the EP, much love.
What's it like to work with Kindbrew and what was it like for you to release an EP with Kindbrew Records?
Also, what did you enjoy about making Changes? What do you enjoy most about exploring and creating music from varying genres? Can you share what sort of feel you were going for with Changes?
I absolutely love Kindbrew Records. Coldbrew is doing a great job with the label and is a good friend of mine. I really enjoyed making Changes. I was going through a bit of a hard time when I made that EP and I wanted to express myself through that tape.
I told myself a long time ago that I never wanted to limit myself to a single genre and wanted to be known for having a wide range of music. I love experimenting and trying out new sounds.

What keeps you humble as a creative?
When I send a song to one of my friends and they tell me it doesn’t sound good hahaha.
I appreciate honesty and I typically rather get feedback and criticism when I send an unreleased beat to someone rather than them just telling me it sounds good and that’s it
Tumblr media
Umys and linanthem
How do you keep yourself in the right headspace with everything that has been going on this year and last with the various obstacles the world has had to face collectively?
I just try to focus on the positives. I try to remember all the great relationships I have with people and how well music is going, and I always try to always look forward and never back. Living in the world right now is not easy and I encourage anyone that is struggling to reach out to a friend and just talk to them.
What helps keep you positive?
Generally, I am just a really happy person and I believe that’s because of all the amazing people I have in my life to be thankful for. It can be hard to stay positive especially in unprecedent times. But, it’s good to surround yourself with honest and loving people and I am so thankful to have people like that in my life.
Tumblr media
B4 and Umys
Musical Influences?
linanthem of course because he’s who got me started and I’d say some of my other biggest influences are Monte Booker, bsd.u and swum.
Any shows or releases coming up that we should keep an eye out for?
Right now I am in the planning phase and trying to figure out who and where to release some projects through. But, I do have a single coming out with Lodge Records on June 11th!
Any Last Words?
Thank you so much for taking the time to get to know me and for all of the kind words and questions. S/o to beatsfortheill!!!!!

Words with Jetson
Tumblr media
Our next interview is with a producer and rapper out of a beautiful place known as Tauranga, in New Zealand, This creative is known as Jetson.
He happens to be one of my cat, Rain's personal favourites for sleep time and regardless of the amount of thumping bass Jetson's music creates and picture frames it knocks over, I understand why he sleeps so sweetly.
Probably a lot to do with the fact that bass has rhythm, just like the sweet sweet words Jetson correlates with his word-plays in tracks such as "Milk" and "SENSEI". Not only impressing cats, Jetson has made moves and connections beyond the long white cloud, proving isolation doesn't always silence brilliance. Jetson brings words any generation can hold some sort of relevance to, words that allow one to notice life moves fast and slow and sometimes you just have to chill and become an observer rather than an instigator.
This is something I feel Jetson has accomplished with his rather low-key approach to releases and interviews.
Jetson is a natural, a true prodigy of sound and a sharer of moods, and to me, is a reminder that with a little bit of passion and persistence, great things can happen, whatever your field.
Jetson’s collective and label - Chill Children is evidence of that, as through it , Jetson is able to work and release with producers and beat-makers all over the globe.
emo the optimist, BACKWHEN, fuyu, eets, and junyii are just some of the diverse talents working with Chill Children and everyone on the catalogue are game-changers that make music that’s anointed in chills.
Creators that push boundaries and portray emotion through sound in the most soothing way, one must check Chill Children.
So with that I hope you enjoy rare words with the nuance wonder, and in his own words.
Sit back, relax, get baked, create, f**k it.
Enjoy and much love.
Hey man thanks for the opportunity to share words. Let's start with a few random quick questions to get things going. Favourite Beverage: Lemon water. Favourite thing to do in your down-time: Make music/skate. Views on Reincarnation: It will be cool if it is true but I guess it doesn't really change anything if it is 🤷‍♂️ Favourite Food: Sushi. Favourite Album of All Time: Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders A song to break it down to: Ethereal & Playboi Carti - Beef A song to chill to: Durand Jones & The Indications - Cruising to the park Do you prefer Sunrise? or Sunset? Why?: Sunset, because I'm never awake for sunrise. A childhood memory in regards to music: I remember saving up to buy Graduation by Kanye West and listening to that shit front to back for weeks straight. Favourite Place to be: Probably on an island.
Tumblr media
Thanks for that, so let's start by asking what inspires you to produce and not only produce but continually produce, what to me is an array of tunes fitting so many genres?
Do you have a set of goals in place when you release a track or do you just hit upload and just hope people are feeling your sound?
What I like to listen to is constantly changing so I like to challenge myself to try and make the things that I'm inspired by.
I like to think that you never know what you're gonna get when you listen to my music but I've still got so much to learn and experiment with. I just try have fun with it and not think about it too much.
How long have you been producing music, and what did you find was hardest to get the hang of when it first came to producing beats?
I had no music theory knowledge or anything when I started making beats (I still don't have much) so there was a lot to learn right away.
Probably the hardest thing that I still battle with is knowing what you should release, what you shouldn't etc. It's hard to balance knowing when something is finished and when it still needs work.
Could you give a quick run-through of the process you follow when it comes to making a beat?
I try to change my process as much as I can to keep things fresh and fun for myself. But I really enjoy hearing a sample somewhere like keys, a quote or a rapper I want to remix, then I start working with that piece and see where it goes.
I'll mess around with the beat for a while and sometimes a track comes out. It can take one day, it can take months. Just depends.
Oldies are always goodies in my books and I have to mention your "bumps from 2014" mixtape, it truly is something special.
What inspired those little bumps? What were you doing back then? Also, can you remember the mood you were in when you made them?
I'm glad you like it haha. That was when I really had no clue what I was doing in terms of making beats, I was making all of those 'off the grid' in Ableton so I was placing drums in random places, I had no idea what bpm the samples were or anything. I really didn't know wtf I was doing, just going off of a vibe.
My mood was really just being excited about making music, I was living in the basement at my mum's house blasting beats on the speakers all day.
[bumps from 2014] - https://soundcloud.com/sleepgodd/bumps-from-2014
You are also a rapper. My favourite NZ rapper to be more precise so thank you for the vibes you create. How did you find out you had it in you to rap and how old were you?
Damn, I appreciate that ✌️ I started rapping with a friend of mine, Jesse aka j cafe when we were around 20. We'd sit in my room smoking weed, and free-styling over beats on Soundcloud all night.
Then we decided to make a track, so we found a beat and jumped in the closet to record some vocals on the laptop microphone.
We put it up on Soundcloud and I've been addicted to making music ever since.

Cover art for Jetson’s 2019 rap release - bluntscraps
Album cover art by Takuroh Toyama
When did you first start rapping in front of others? What did it feel like in the beginning compared to now when you perform live?
I was insanely nervous the first time I ever did anything live and that feeling really hasn't left me lol.
Except now I know how to deal with nerves a bit better and actually enjoy the whole experience of doing something live.
I definitely think I'm a lot better now than my first time doing it, but I still kinda suck 😂 Staying on topic with your rapping, material-wise you have mad skills, your music is forever helping me chill out so thank you.
When did you start writing down your words and turning them into structured songs? Do you have any other artists that inspire your writing style?
When I was younger I really liked the flow of rappers rather than what they were actually saying.
Dudes like MF Doom and Earl Sweatshirt really influenced me at the start wanting to come up with lines that were catchy and different.
To form an actual track I usually just mumble over beats to get the flow, then I start placing words in the spots where I think they fit.
Does your family know you make music? If so what do they think of it, any dance parties in the Jetson Family Household?
My immediate family all know and support my music. My mum used to have one of my tracks as her ringtone for years lol.
No jetson dance parties yet, but seems like every year more people in my extended family know about my music.
You were also a member of NZ Duo, Chill Children of which you rap and produce with yet another kiwi talent, both having low-key approaches when it comes to presenting yourselves through social media. What happened with that?
Me and J Cafe started Chill Children as a rap project in the early days but we moved to different places in the world and started doing our own solo projects so things sort of stopped happening with it.
I still credit those times with really getting me started on music though. He's still making dope shit and we'll probably link up on a track soon.
Tumblr media
So then it became a sort of collective community, and through your Chill Children Soundcloud, you allow a platform for other artists to have their music heard.
Much Love on the concept, What inspired you to start sharing other artists music and what keeps you sharing? I'm very grateful btw, too many gems.
I work on music a lot with my friend emo the optimist (aka kodama) and we always wanted to run a label/collective kind of thing so we could release music from artists that we really liked.
After me and Jesse started doing our own thing, Chill Children seemed like the perfect place to start doing that.
It's one of my favorite things to work on as we have a hand in working with the artists on every release. I just love that we're able to share so much music that we really like with the world.

Any new Chill Children material we should keep an eye out for?
We always have new music from new artists dropping so definitely follow our instagram/twitter if you want to stay updated on it.
We're currently working on a phonk compilation with guys like DJ Yung Vamp, Genshin etc. It's gonna be crazy 🤯
Back to your solo releases through your alias Jetson. What made you want to start putting out your material alone? Also, do you have a favourite Jetson release?
I really felt like I had to release music solo to see what I could do.
I've learned so much about myself through that process, became more confident and a better musician.
Probably my favorite rap track I've made is called 'Escape'.
Not many people have heard it but it's on Spotify and other places.
My favorite beat I've made is probably 'dylan rieder'.
Have to ask, are you working on any new releases we should keep an ear out for? If so, what can we expect with your coming releases?
I just released an album on Bandcamp called THROWED TAPES which was really influenced by DJ screw and other phonk producers.
I'm working on a lofi R&B tape for Bandcamp, a lofi beat tape, and I really want to release a rap EP.
Who knows when those will come out though haha
Taking it back a little to your rapping again I have to mention "Milk". What inspires the words in this track?
Also please share the story behind your track "Melancholy"? The words are somewhat mesmerizing, thank you!
With milk, I just heard the beat from bsd.u and really wanted to make something weird that just followed the flow of the beat.
On melancholy I tried to think about what I was saying a little more. The instrumental is so introspective and smooth I knew I had to come correct on it.

Must Cops on Bandcamp
So we’ve entered, well and truly into the last days of 2020. With chain stores opting for Christmas getups in November and the festive spirit blossoming early these ways, I simply can’t hate.
Mariah Carey Chistmas playing from the backyard as my nieces enjoy arts and crafts with their Nanna I feel it’s sort of necessary to take in these good vibes after the year 2020 has been.
Instead of listing the trials of this year I thought I’d take advantage of Bandcamp Friday that happens on the 4th of December, and share some releases I believe are worth the cop, and a few reasons why.
If you’re not aware 100% of all purchases made on the 4th of December go directly towards the artist whom you choose to support, no cut to Bandcamp just cash straight to the creative, if you can, take advantage of this opportunity.
The following is a list of releases in no particular order that I believe are worth checking out on the 4th from various genres and creators, enjoy and much love.

Minutes - Sadiva
Released a few days before my birthday on the 18th of May 2018, Minutes by all-round top sheila out of Melbourne, Australia - Sadiva, is a musical blessing and true revelation of sampling goodness.
Putting out beats at a high calibre from the early days, Sadiva is an artist to check out if you’re into beats with atmosphere and bounce. Musical sound-capes bless the ears as each beat plays over.
Minutes is a true must cop to any beat collectors catalogue. Smooth, memorable and true, you’ll get a taste of beat-making bliss with this second album released by the talent that is Sadiva, don’t miss her.

blend tapes vol. 1 - tkdwn
Edmonton, Canada local tkdwn released this four beat tape, May 16th of this year and for me this release was sneaky, and furthermore showed tkdwn’s diversity and ability when it comes to producing unique and time-less beats.
Like tkdwn’s other beat-tapes “loopdreams.” and “you can (get thru)”, blend tapes vol.1 gives you a true taste of what this creative has to offer from the first track.
As blend tapes starts with a eery yet all too consuming and slightly familiar sonic 80s feel, through-out the first track “kickbacklike” nothing but goodness is expressed.
Not to mention the flawless tweaks and use of vocals on each and every one of the tracks on this tape. tkdwn builds a scene and emotion in a way that feels natural, a true example of one who is dedicated to developing their own unquie sound, much love for that.
If you’re a fan of Hip-Hop and beats you should check this guys whole category out you won’t be disappointed. In the meantime check blend tapes vol.1, it’ll be something worth adding to your collection.

Lazerz - weirddough
I’d like to start by saying if you’re a fan of Hip-Hop production and boom bap goodness then for sure check out this truly genuine goodie by Las Vegas talent weirddough. Soulful transitions and drums for days this release is a masterpiece in my eyes.
The smoothest transition from his May album Programs in Color, Lazerz shows that with time weirddough and his sound utter nothing more than progression and cohesion.
Funky jazzy numbers that will have your head bopping and your soul tweaked, this is yet another must cop in my books.
Name your price and go on an adventure courtesy of weirddough and his collection of beats that are a true blessing to the beat community.
Must listen tracks on this release for me is “Gold Wrangz“, it’ll bring a twinkle to your soul and “Nightcrawler” which is one of the smoothest beats ever, the gat is out of this world, not to mention the drums.
Appreciation beyond words for this artist, his music has done wonders for my nervous wreck of a brain. Chill and bounce to this blessing by beat-smith talent and all round genuine being, weirdough.

WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD - Nick Hakim
I wouldn’t be being true to myself if I didn’t include this heart-warming 12 track release by Brooklyn based Washington DC native, Nick Hakim whom has been soothing my soul for years now.
Since the release of Nick Hakim’s first studio album Green Twins, Nick and his live band have taken listeners on a journey beyond words and expressions with his intricate song-writing and soulful pipes that offer the rasp that carries Nick’s story-telling to times past and present.
WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD for me, further elevates and expresses Nick Hakim’s abilities when it comes to sharing ones essence. Personal revelations and experiences woven ever so sweetly together to deliver an album that has carried me through some of the hard times of 2020.
A little different from my other recommendations but it’s worth the cop without a doubt.
Nick Hakim and his band work wonders with this release. I recommend you play this album start to finish to capture its true goodness but for first time listeners getting your ears familiar, check “ALL THESE CHANGES”, “QADIR” and “CRUMPY” all unquie and delicate tracks that will give you a taste of this multi-instrumentalist ability and sound.
Thank you Nick this release is a blessing to sore ears.

house Bound - JonQuil
Heading down the route of funky house beats with this next release by another Melbourne, Australia talent JonQuil.
house Bound released on August the third of this year was a set of songs that brought a lot of joy and bounce to my 2020 covid experience. Where others were less fortunate I had this album, something that made waiting room waits more than bearable.
Sexy production on another level, check this release out, if you like music that makes you move then this is a must.
If you can, play this one all the way through but just to get a taste check out “Morning Smile” everything about it is trance inducing magic.
Thank you JonQuil, you and this release are absolute gems.

Black & White EP - Please Wait (Ta-ku & Matt McWaters)
Released December 13th 2019, the collaborative glory that is Ta-ku and Matt McWaters - Please Wait, brings together Black & White, a masterful storytelling of tracks that paint the most alluring moments with their sounds.
Please Wait pulls at heart-strings with their ever so dreamy first track “Mt. Keele” that dabbles in instrumental blessings and swift odes to the soul. As the ep plays through you are greeted by stunning vocal displays and production that overlap in the most blossoming way.

Words with Gnarly
Tumblr media
Our next interview is with London, UK based multi-talent, Gnarly, someone who is working blank canvas into art of the soundscapes. With her exceptional abilities when it comes to beat-making, production, and might I add finger drumming. Gnarly lays a foundation that triggers head bops, sways, and moments of stilled contemplation.
Lay back on Gnarly's February 12th release "One Takes Vol. 1" and those moments of contemplation will become moments of focus and intent. One Takes Vol. 1 is a release that encourages productivity, not just of the body but of the mind and soul.
Each track is a journey of bounce and trigger, chill back and get moving. As washing piles become non-existent and rooms febrezed, with Gnarlys "One Takes" playing in the background, yet in the foreground, we have this humble creative doing her thing to ensure the beat culture stays strong in not just the UK but also worldwide.
With her online show “Secret Sauce”, which showcases original works by beat-makers from all over, beat battles with respect, not to mention the smoothest of sounds.
Moments are being curated with this side-project that is offering producers, finger drummers, and beat-makers an honest home for their beats to be interpreted with appreciation and true responses. Much respect for this concept.
With 12 years of experience in production and a mediative stance on finger drumming, Gnarly is an act that lovers of all things chilled, treated with care, in a tumble wash of all things hip hop, shouldn't miss. With respect for the roots in mindset and attention to detail to be expected, Gnarly is proving actions speak louder than words, and the actions Gnarly is making are well approved of here at beatsfortheill. We look forward to gaining more insight into Gnarly's creative endeavors with these following words with her. So enjoy and much love.

Tumblr media
Thanks for that gnarly. So, I thought I'd start by asking, what got you into producing music in the first place? Did you have a very musical upbringing? Also, can you share what you use to make your music? In the beginning, did you ever think you'd be performing live shows? What keeps you humble?
I’ve always wanted to do music ever since I could remember. My mum got me a piano when I was 6 and lessons from our local Church piano player. I’m classically trained to an intermediate level but lessons and structure in that sense never suited me so I stopped grades at the age of 15 but carried on playing and taught myself Guitar and Finger Drumming.
I had clarinet and violin lessons at school too but never stuck with those. I actually wanted to be a rapper when I was younger and that’s how I got into making beats, I realised I enjoyed making beats much more than rapping but I guess the performing bug stuck with me. I felt like words never adequately expressed my feelings.
At school I did Music GCSE, I was a Music Tech Scholar for A Levels and went on to study at University and got a degree in Sound Arts and Design. I was pretty unsure what path I wanted to take for a while, whether that was going to be as a singer/songwriter, recording/mix engineer, live sound engineer, composing music for sync, being a producer or performer and I ended up doing a bit of everything I guess which has led up to me being so versatile today.
I currently use Maschine MK3 by Native Instruments with Ableton Live 10 to create and perform.
As a producer I didn’t know if I wanted to be a performer in the beginning but I realised I wanted to be more than just a bedroom producer. I wanted to play live shows touring the world and see peoples reactions to my music first hand. I never imagined I would get to the level of success I did in such a short time (when I started to actually make an effort) but I also feel in my gut I have to put everything into it to see how far I can go cos life is short and there’s still a long way to go.
Life is hard and I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs. When you go through stuff like that it makes you feel very grateful and humble to have opportunities doing what you love for a living.
In regards to finger drumming, when did you pick that up? Did it come hand in hand with producing or, did you pick it up later? Is finger-drumming an outlet for yourself? If so, what would you say it helps you deal with in life? Also, what would you say this artform has added to your day to day life as a producer?
I started finger drumming around 5 years ago. It’s something I picked up many years after I started producing. I wanted my drums to feel more human and groovy and it was also a way for me to perform my beats live. I never had the intention of it being what I was most known for but it’s been life changing and opened so many doors for me.
I was going through a hard time a few years ago and I really threw myself into finger drumming. Practicing for hours every day. It’s a bit like meditation for me. Stops me from getting too caught up in my feelings and overthinking, as chilled out as I may seem my mind can run at 1000 mph sometimes so it really helps me to be able to bang on pads and lets me channel my energy into something productive.
Being able to have a career as a finger drummer and producer meant I was able to quit my day job so I could make music all day every day and I love it!
Tumblr media
What would you say you appreciate most about being able to create all the different layers of your songs using native instruments, guitar, and other musical trinkets? What draws you in to want to sample a particular vocal or sound? When it comes to making a song, what layer do you like to work on first? Do you sometimes change the starting process up?
Music is all about expression so when it comes to choosing which sounds and layers I'm going to use, the feeling it gives you means everything. For that reason the layers I use and how I start a track totally depends on how I'm feeling that day and how I want to translate that into my beats.
Sometimes the chord progression is the first thing and sometimes it's the drums. I think it's important to stay fluid and not get stuck in a particular way of creating or a particular genre because I'm not trying to make beats that all sound the same in the same way I don't feel or think the same way every day.
Let's discuss your February 14th, of this year, release "One Takes Vol. 1", beautiful work on this 21-track album that truly showcases your exceptional skills as a producer.
My introduction to your sound came through track number 2 "Snake Eyes" which you shared with me a wee while back through the Facebook page for "lofi family". Shout out to all involved with lofi family - https://soundcloud.com/lofifamily.
What you shared with me was you preforming "Snake Eyes" and boy did you make my day. I knew I wanted to interview you just from that one song.
Pair that number with tracks like "So Alone" that pulls the hearts strings with its delicate drums and vocals, and "Sleepy" a smooth resort for a sore head these individual songs are just a fraction of the goodness install if you cop "One Takes Vol. 1", check it out here -
https://gnarlymusic.bandcamp.com/album/one-takes-vol-1
Lovely release gnarly, you truly put the track-list together brilliantly as well. So, what was "One Takes Vol. 1" like to put together and, what inspired the track-list order? How long did "One Takes Vol. 1" take to put together?
One Takes Vol. 1 was the culmination of some of my favourite beats from my 30 Day Beat Challenge from the start of 2020. Doing these challenges is how I like to start off my year and has been for the last 3 years. It's a good way to challenge yourself to create something new every day and to put it out there. I haven't released much music even though I create a lot of content and thought it would be good to put some of these beats out or they would just get lost in my instagram feed and I felt like they deserved more than that as I'd put a lot of energy into them.
The track list was dependent on the feeling as I wanted it to feel like a journey – it starts off chilled and gets a bit heavier towards the end. The first track being called Dawn and the last Have A Nice Day. I used to DJ quite a bit and that was the thinking behind my sets too.
Do you have a favourite track from the release? And if so, what draws you in most about it as its creator? In a paragraph, can you share what you were trying to explore and create with this release? What are you hoping your listeners will get from "One Takes Vol. 1"?
My favourite track from the beat tape is the one I'd shared with you “Snake Eyes” I really like the sample choice, chops and transitions on this one.
The whole release was based on the concept of one takes, recorded in one take, no edits, no quantise just the groove as it is laid bare.
I was hoping that people could really feel that live groove and the imperfections because finger drumming is a very human thing.
You actively work with beat-boxers, and are the Lead Mix and Mastering Engineer for the UK, Beatboxing Championships post-production, and have been since 2015. What an experience this must be, can you share how this came about? What do you enjoy most about working with beat-boxers? Also, what do you find is most rewarding about exploring this side of gnarly?
My partner is known in the beatbox world as Hobbit and is a former World Champion with his crew The Beatbox Collective and runs a beatbox agency called 5th Element who took over running of the UK Beatbox Championships in 2015. I'd done some mixing work for him and The Beatbox Collective in the past and so when they took over the champs they asked me to do the post-production for their online content.
It's definitely inspiring to see some of the incredible talent in the beatbox scene and I guess what I do is similar but just on pads.
Mixing and mastering is something I have dabbled in since University and my experience being a producer for over a decade means I have the skills to be able to do jobs like this but it's something I decided I didn't want a career in some time ago. I prefer to create than to edit other peoples work but it's been a great experience.
Tumblr media
Can you share a little bit about your work with the 2015 World Champion beat-boxers "The Beatbox Collective"? What did you take in from this collaboration that you feel helped you as a producer?
I worked on an advert sync with The Beatbox Collective which was featured on National TV which was pretty cool. We recorded the whole thing in my home studio over a week and I spent some time mixing it.
My partner being one of them and the rest of them being friends I get called in to help them out with recording and mixing every now and again.
It can be a challenge to work with beatboxers as an engineer if you don't have prior experience as the sound, dynamics and frequency range of beatboxers is totally different to more traditional instruments/vocals.
You also work with the London based "School of Bop" Collective. I found out about this project through the fact you've worked with them, and I love what they represent, shout outs to INTALEKT, and Lory Louves The founders of this artistic goodness.
I see "School of Bop" started to make change and create opportunities for the youth of the community and beyond. Love, this way of thinking.
What was it like working with "School of Bop"? What do you love that they represent? And finally, can you share more details about the work you got to do with "School of Bop"?
Find School of Bop on Instagram here - @schoolofbop_
I absolutely love the concept of School of Bop and Intalekt and Lory are two of the nicest people I have ever met in my life. They're so open and encouraging and I think facilitating the youth of today to be able to have opportunities in music and production is great.
I would have jumped at the chance to be involved in something like this when I was younger but there weren't really opportunities like this back then, so it's great they're creating them now.
You've also worked with a collective, also based in London known as "L.A.B Collective".
Made up of London based DJs, Producers, MCs, and Visual Artists who work together to push underground music, providing platforms for other music creatives to get together and share live experiences through live shows and online through their YouTube Channel.
Through YouTube, you can experience some of the creative ideas this Collective has put together, much love for the concepts.
L.A.B Collective here - https://www.labxcollective.com/
How did you link up with L.A.B Collective and, what drew you in about their ideas? What was your experience like with them? Finally, what did you learn from your collaborative work with L.A.B?
I was introduced to Chris aka BusyFingers the mastermind behind L.A.B. Collective through my good friend Tope aka Truefunktion I first met when I performed at one of the Native Instruments Meetups in London.
He'd mentioned me to Chris who then reached out to invite me to perform at a finger drumming competition special. L.A.B. Collective is another great concept created by another lovely human being. It gives producers of all levels a chance to meet up, share beats and vibe to great music.
I've had the chance to perform at a few events by L.A.B. Collective and it's a really great place to try out new material.
You've also worked with "Native Instruments" who are responsible for quality music software, and hardware for DJing/ Finger Drumming and more.
What an experience that must have been for you as a producer. What did you work on with Native Instruments? Is your work with them on-going?
What has your experience been like so far? What draws you in most when it comes to working with a company? And finally, what have you learned so far from this collaborative experience?
I have had a relationship with Native Instruments for a few years now and hopefully many more to come. Getting to work with them on product demos, performances and content creation. They're a really wonderful company that go above and beyond to connect with their community of users and creators.
Recently I was invited to create some content exploring the new Komplete 13 Expansions on my Maschine. Which you can view on their youtube channel.
The most important things I've learnt when working with brands is to be yourself but be professional, meet your deadlines and reply to your emails promptly. Some of the tasks have been a challenge, but I love a challenge and they've definitely helped me to grow professionally.
Thanks for that. So, I thought we'd spend some time chatting about Secret Sauce which you can find here - https://www.facebook.com/secretsauce.beats/
You founded Secret Sauce with two fellow creatives Ohno da French and Temple Music, and from what I've watched with the Secret Sauce Shows, it seems to be doing a blessed job of showcasing beat-makers and producers that grace the show, much respect for this.
Can you share from your point of view what Secret Sauce represents? And how you guys came up with the idea? What do you appreciate most about being a part of this project? What can we expect with the coming jams and battles available to viewers through YouTube as well? Also, loved the setup, and the layout for Secret Sauce its bliss.
How did you come up with that as well?
Check Secret Sauce on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8oWU_vlBTXIcwZgrbhfbpA
I came up with the idea at the beginning of lockdown, as most of the world had gone into self-isolation I thought it would be a great time to connect with other live performing beat-makers around the world.
We meet up, share beats, discuss ideas and it's been really inspiring. We're currently putting together our first season of battles so watch out for that when it comes out.
Some of the creatives you can witness laying down fresh beats through Secret Sauce:

Tumblr media
Thanks for that Gnarly, so I would love the opportunity to discuss your Instagram @gnarly.music, a blessed spread. Firstly, what have you had to overcome, ongoing, as a creative sharing your artform via videos and collabs that are performed live?
When I started posting videos it was more of a diary of my progress. A lot of my early videos are pretty low quality in terms of both sound and video. I started finger drumming and wanted to be able to remember my routines and look back on the videos to see how I was improving and what I needed to work on more.
I think because I was there in the early days of both finger drumming and Instagram, there was only a handful of us doing it on Instagram 5 years ago my page took of and gained fans quickly.
The scene is much more saturated these days. As a result of the growth I wanted to produce higher quality videos so I've learnt a lot about filming and video editing. One of the biggest challenges is also being able to consistently produce new content so creating new beats that don't all sound the same or use the same pattern is something that's quite important to me.
Collabs can be difficult as my whole process is live recorded videos and that's something that isn't very common for most other people, getting people on board with that can sometimes be a challenge.
Also, what do you believe are some pros and cons to performing via Instagram? And finally, what advice would you give creatives who are trying to use Instagram to show their works with the world?
Instagram is a great tool for reaching large audiences all over the world. It's a great platform to connect with other like-minded people and beat-makers and actually a lot of my paid work will come through Instagram. It's very important to think about branding if you're using your page to sell yourself as an artist it needs to visually represent you as an artist.
As I previously mentioned, Instagram has become over saturated in recent years. There are a lot of people doing the same things and a lot of the hashtags are now flooded with repost pages. Although these repost pages can be good for reach, they're often charging people ridiculous fees to get featured and are often only representing a certain demographic (mostly men...).
The algorithms are constantly changing on Instagram and you might find yourself doing well on reach one week and not so great the next. It's easy to get caught up on chasing numbers but always remember the reason you're there in the first place. Creating music or content. Focus on that not the numbers.
I love how you often take others' tracks and flip them to give them that Gnarly feel, appreciate how you also twist up your own tracks with collabs with beatboxers, drummers, and other producers from all over the globe, you end up producing some quality stuff.
To name a few, your collab with @demasquine, Your Naruto flip "Sadness and Sorrow" and your collab with Mridangam player @rajappah, much love for all this content available via your Instagram @gnarly.music so much creativity being expressed.
What were all these collabs like for you to be a part of and also what do you enjoy most about flipping someone else's track? Finally, what draws you in about a creative that makes you want to collab?
The in-person collab series from the beginning of this year was something I was hoping to continue until the pandemic hit. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and experiment working with different artists to see what kind of different things we could produce together. I had a lot of fun with these and especially the last one which was inviting around 10 finger drumming friends to my house in London and jamming out for a few hours. Funnily enough this was only a few weeks before the pandemic and we had been planning to make the jams once a month. Unfortunately since then, I haven't been able to do any more in-person collabs and so have turned to online collabs. These definitely don't have the same vibe as we're not vibing off each other to create the piece but I've been able to collab with people all around the world.
Doing flips is something I enjoy especially if I'm feeling inspired by a track, doing a reimagining of it helps me to frame ideas for my own compositions. The best way to learn about composition is through recreation of compositions you admire. That was something I learnt in school studying music.

Words with ENTRO//
Tumblr media
ENTRO// hailing from Melbourne, Australia is a beat-maker that is making moves within Australia and beyond, showcasing quality sounds that express the eccentric joys of hip hop, not to mention the bounce it induces in the day to day lives of its appreciators.
Which was something that drew me in about ENTRO//, first listen. His ability to change up the atmosphere around well-known rap tracks and their vocals in a way that doesn't take away the integrity from the original is truly blessed.
ENTRO// adds components that trigger the soul with his collection of vocal laced escapades in his various releases. Those ENTRO// escapades are evident in albums like "Tōge" and "Hands Free" released June of this year and "Tōge" October of last year.
Teleport back to 2018 and chill on ENTRO//'s flawless ode to Jazz and Soul "after hours" his nine-track wonder available like all ENTRO// releases via Bandcamp. "After hours" as an album, highlights, and samples moods and sounds that are timeless, it simply can't be missed if you're a lover of soul-infused musical displays.
Not to mention one of his earlier beat-tapes, "Etcetera" released in May 2016 that shows the development and dedication to beats ENTRO// has embodied since the beginning.
You'll notice ENTRO//'s creative response and fluency has shown his dedication to staying true to the roots of a song, and this is evident from the early days for this truly inventive beat-smith.
Innovation at it's best is what you can expect when you hit play on an ENTRO// track. So chill and take in the words of this Australian talent, making music for the soul, body, and mind, much love.
Tumblr media
Hey ENTRO// thanks a lot for the opportunity to share words. First off, I thought I'd ask a few random quick questions to get things started.
Favourite Food: Sushi
Favourite Beverage: Red bull
A track to cry to: Jesus is the one ( I have depression)
A song to break it down to: ethereal - Playboi Carti
Last piece of art you brought, and what drew you in about it: Commissioned a piece from Melbourne artists @cactvs - portrait of me and my partner
Views on Reincarnation: donno
Views on Tea: Green
A childhood memory in regards to music: My mum used to listen to Macey Gray and I hated it lol
Go to Album of All-Times: Saba - Care for Me
Favourite Place to Eat in Melbourne: Korean BBQ
What you enjoy doing in your downtime: Video games, making clothes
Favourite Location: Osaka
Thanks for that ENTRO//. So, I thought I'd ask, what inspired you to give producing a go in the first place? Did you play any instruments before you picked up beat-making? How many years have you been at it and what brings you the most joy when you're making music?
I've played instruments since I was young. Guitar and drums mostly. I also learnt viola at school but that sucked ass. I've picked up piano recently too.
I just enjoy creating things I like, all the music I release is stuff I enjoy listening to myself.
When making music, do you have a routine you follow or a way you set your creative environment up before getting onto a track? If so, how do you find this benefits your mood and your creative output?
Not really, I just sit at my studio and listen to music, roll up some broccoli, look for samples, make drum tracks. I'll find something that sounds cool and go from there.
What does ENTRO// mean and represent to you? What is something you're trying to share through your music?
ENTRO// is just a form of expression for me - I just share what I enjoy making and am blessed to have people enjoy it the same way I do.
Melbourne has such a well, developing community for beat-makers and musicians in general, much love to those based in Melbourne bringing up other artists. Artists like Amin Payne whom we interviewed a while back and SADIVA whom we are in the works of words with too.
Humble individuals devoting themselves to sound, really feel that.
What do you enjoy about living and creating in Melbourne? And what do you feel Melbourne has to offer musicians that may be unique, compared to other areas in Australia you have visited or lived in?
Melbourne is hella diverse when it comes to music, and we're lucky to have a lot of opportunities to play live and network with each other. Everyone is super supportive too, it's nice to have a community like that.
Tumblr media
Can you share more about HIGH BIAS a monthly event based in Melbourne that you are a part of?
High Bias is originally an event brand me and my partner put together with Fiftyfive. Through everyone's support and our amazing community, we've grown into a multi venue event group, as well as a clothing brand and micro cassette label.
HIGH BIAS I believe is a label as well, focusing on Mirco cassette releases for artists creating in the realms of Hip-Hip and Jazz and also supplies quality merch and vintage apparel through their website too, love the concept.
HIGH BIAS Website - https://highbias.supply/
Can you share what HIGH BIAS means, believes, and represents collectively?
High Bias was originally a homage to the "good old days" of lofi, before Spotify playlists and anime beats. We focus on the culture we fell in love with - and try to share that with everyone else.
These days, we've expanded our scope to become a platform for all things "sample culture." Essentially that means anything that reinvents conventions or turns them into something new. We try not to limit ourselves on what we want to do - we take each thing as it comes and decide as a group whether it's something we believe in and want to represent or not.
What is the feel of the live, monthly shows known as "Lofi Lounge"?
Lofi Lounge is pretty much what it sounds like. Lofi beats in a basement lounge bar. We also host jazz bands and hip hop crews, artists and video DJs too. We focus on creating a vibe rather than a show, we want it to be somewhere to chill with homies and catch up with the community.
And with the restrictions in place with Covid19 here in Australia, has HIGH BIAS had ideas for online shows?.
We think live streaming shows is quite over saturated right now - and it's not something we're excited about so its not on the cards right now.
What else can we expect from HIGH BIAS in the coming months?
Once venues start to re open we'll be back with our usual programming. We've got some more clothing drops on the way too - and finally a little secret project in the works with Good Mood Melbourne, but we can't speak too much on that right now.
Are you hoping to have HIGH BIAS in full swing again after restrictions have been lifted?
Absolutely.
What do you think you enjoy most about being a part of HIGH BIAS? And finally, what do you feel encouraged the move to start selling quality threads? The collection is mint by the way.
Thanks! High Bias allows us to support the community and share things we love.
We started making threads because outside of music, I've always been big on clothing and streetwear. It's another avenue of expression. We aim to make clothes that are sustainable and affordable, while still focusing on design and cuts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What do you love most about expressing a part of yourself through music? Do you feel your music makes you feel vulnerable sometimes? If so, how do you overcome and embrace those feelings?
It's always enjoyable creating something, I do it for myself first and foremost. I'm just lucky to have people that like it as much as I do. Making music isn't a vulnerable thing for me.
When I first started sharing my music it was a little frightening putting it out to the world - but you kinda just have to do things like that sometimes and cop the feedback. Makes you a stronger person.
With everything going on worldwide at the moment with protests, illness, and lack of employment, what do you think creatives should be doing to show their support for those affected?
I don't think it matters who you are, people should look out for their friends and family - think global act local.
What do you feel creatives within the realms of Hip-Hop should be doing to show their appreciation for the roots and fore-creators?
As a white dude I don't like to speak on what we should be doing as it's not my place. But what's most important is to listen, be respectful and know that we are guests in this culture.
Would you say you like to explore various genres? What do you enjoy most about adapting and creating your own sound?
I donno, as a music fan I listen to many different genres, but when it comes to creating music I do what feels right. I'm really into that heavy 808 type stuff right now, so I try to blend jazzy, soulful stuff with that.
Let's go back and talk about your earliest beat-tape released in 2016 known as "Etcetera".
For me, this release as a whole is dosed in those smooth tones and jazzy feels that had me thinking to myself,
"Surely, you'd been producing a while before you released music?",
"Etcetera" is a blessed release to play track 1 to 10.
Favourite track for me is "INFAMOUS", much love for the skills displayed in this timeless release.
Link to Etcetera here - https://entrobeats.bandcamp.com/album/etcetera
Can you share how "Etcetera" came about and also, why the name Etcetera? Can you remember what your thoughts were like on the release date? What atmosphere were you trying to create with this release?
Etcetera is actually just a collection of beats I made in the early days. It's not something I revisit often but it was a good benchmark of what I had made at the time.
Do you have a favourite track from "Etcetera"? If so, what beat and why? Finally, what inspired the names of the tracks on "Etcetera"?
I don't really have a favourite from that album, I actually barely remember it lol. When I name tracks there's nothing special too it, it's normally a play on the original samples name, or a line from an acapella I used.
Thanks for that. Can you share a little about Lab Co and what they represent? You've released with this collective quite a bit.
What do you feel Lab Co represents and, what do you enjoy about releasing and creating with Lab Co? Where is Lab Co based?
Lab Co is literally just a crew of homies from mostly Melbourne. We're not as active as we once were but we all still play the same shows and catch up all the time.
It came together through us all being heavily involved with BeatLab, a show put together my Walla C and Clay Adams.
They gave a lot of us our first shows - and it grew from there. It's amazing having a tight knit crew around you, I love all those guys and girls and am forever grateful for it.
Tumblr media
Going back to 2016, you also released another beat-tape in that year, "Wave '92" which is a full release consisting of 26 tracks that you put together for Melbourne based label Groove Penguin Records and HIGH BIAS.
For me, there are too many added goodies for me to choose a favourite.
You supply variety and innovation when it comes to working with beats and, your style feels very natural.
Link to Wave '92 here -
https://entrobeats.bandcamp.com/album/wave-92
How did this release come about and what inspired you to create it?
Also, what do you appreciate about having the opportunities to work on your music with other local curators and labels?
Funny enough, I was working a cafe at the time and got talking to the dude who runs the label as he was a regular customer. One thing lead to another and we put together the tape. It was awesome meeting everyone in that community and learning the ropes. I appreciate them for putting out my first physical release, meant a lot.
2018 was a good year for experimental Hip-Hop in Melbourne with the release of the HIGH BIAS compilation "local cuts [comp #01]" which showcased the works of producers and beat-makers that have played at the monthly Melbourne shows "Lofi Lounge".
Insane tracks by artists such as SADIVA, ohwell, and yourself are featured in local cuts and it's such a release.
Bounce, emotion, and soul are all present in this comp, cheers to all involved.
Link to "local cuts [comp #01]" Here- https://highbiassupply.bandcamp.com/album/local-cuts-comp-01
Your track "i'm lazy these days" for the compilation was a smooth jazzy number. The piano simply carries you away, much love.
What's it like to perform at a "Lofi Lounge"? Also, what was it like to make "i'm lazy these days"? Clever track name btw.
Performing at Lofi Lounge is pretty chill.
We let people do their thing and just facilitate them.
I'm lazy these days was literally thrown together in 20 min cus I forgot to make a beat for the tape lmao, hence the name.
Tumblr media
Does your family know you make music? If so, what does your family think about your sound and how do they show support for what you do?
Yeah! They're real supportive as well, they think cus I got a couple million plays on Spotify that I'm like a big deal, so it's kind of cute lmao
Away from music, what does your day to day activities usually consist of? Does your day to day inspire or influence the music you make?
Not much right now cus of isolation, but it's normally a lot of going to shows, seeing homies, playing video games. Inspiration comes from experience for me. Whether it's listening to new music or getting hyped from someone else's success.
Can we look with a wee bit more detail into your August 2018 release "after hours"? Which has to be one of my favourite albums by yourself.
Jazzy vibes that suit day or night layered in drums that make the heart skip a beat, vibrant and balanced, I've found myself playing "after hours" on repeat. Thank you for the effort you put into this one.
Link to after hours here -
https://entrobeats.bandcamp.com/album/after-hours
You produced this album in 6 months too, what was that like?
Just like any other project for me, I catch a certain vibe and run with it till I have something
Did you create any deadlines for yourself with this release? Also, what was "after hours" like to create?
I never do deadlines, I try to release at least one full length a year but it's more important for me to make sure the music is ready before pushing it out.
What atmosphere were you trying to create with this 9-track blessing?
Just some lounge type hip hop beats - I didn't think too much about this one but I do think I really refined my style at the time when it came to that release.
Do you have a favourite track from this release, if so, which one and why?
Nokia 3310 by far - it's just such a tasty sample.
Last year you released "Tōge" a 14 track album that showcases lofi hip-hop laced in all things phonk and jazz, with drums that add bounce and has the head-bopping till you hit the last track "Class Is Over", to the way you worked the vocal samples in "Tōge" which also needs to be commended.
Nice work yet again on this release, I feel it's a must cope for anyone who enjoys experimental hip-hop. "Tōge" seems to show how you subtly change your sound and still hold that integrity within your work, it's blessed to hear through-out this entire release.
When one purchases this release, you're also gifted with 11 bonus musical blessings that are just worth the purchase, much gratitude for the additions.
Link to Tōge here - https://entrobeats.bandcamp.com/album/t-ge
Can you share what "Tōge" was like to create? What encouraged the vocal samples you worked with in this release? And finally, what did you enjoy working on most with this album?
Toge for me was my departure from lofi. I was experimenting with 808s and slower tempos, triplets etc. I started using Acapellas from modern rappers I liked, putting it into a different context over my type of beats. It was refreshing to do something different.
Tumblr media
If you still have it in you, I would love to discuss "Hands Free" which you released at the start of June this year.
This album has your track "double cheese" in it and this track was my introduction to your sound.
Your take on "Double" by Smokepurpp and NLE Choppa just blew me away, subtle alterations to the vocals that enhanced drums as I had never heard them before. You added another layer of soul with your take.
I knew at first play you'd be someone I'd love the opportunity to share words with so before we end, I'd just like to thank you for what you're doing within music here in Australia.
Back on "Hands Free" what inspired you to put this release together?
Link to Hands Free here - https://entrobeats.bandcamp.com/album/hands-free
Nothing in particular, I had been working on some new music and with all the time off I've had recently it was a good time to put something together.
What were your nerves like with this release? What inspires you to release bonus tracks with your releases?
No nerves or anything like that. The bonus tracks on that release are for the people that prefer the instrumentals. I like to include them for anyone that buys the album.
Also, what drew in in about the particular songs you chose to sample for this album as a whole and how does this release resonate with you as its creator?
I was actually listening to a lot of Jetson, baccyard and Soudiere at the time so that was kind of the vibe.
Any upcoming releases or collaborations in the works that you would like to share more details about?
I'm always working on music so I'll have some stuff out again soon. Some singles and maybe another EP before the end of the year.
Can you recommend any artists from music and beyond that you feel our readers would benefit from checking out?
Aside from who I mentioned above, as well as everyone in Lab Co - I'd have to say some of my influences when I first started out.
bsd.u, p00k, aNTOJE, mdbnd, AKTR, bugseed,
Any Last Words?

Words with Sadiva
Tumblr media
Photography by Kim Summer
SADIVA is the premise of our following words, a female beatsmith hailing from Melbourne, Australia, the soul of female comradeship, and the essence of Australian Boom Bap - SADIVA, is inspiring fellow female creatives and is not only sewing but intertwining creative relationships between both male and female.
This only seems to inspire beat-makers to continue to arise in confidence and support all over the globe and SADIVA is continually pushing this atmosphere, something we here at beatsfortheill completely embrace.
Curating over the years, some of the best musical treats with the release of her Compilations "Women of the World" Volumes 1 and 2. With appreciation, these releases mean,
SADIVA allows anyone to have a master's ear.
It also must be said that this Melbourne local can have all heads bopping to samples that linger for days, with soothed souls and a conscious understanding -  SADIVAS' WoW compilations have helped a lot of women in need, which brings with it, a certain sense of honesty,  something SADIVA'S personal catalog, in all its calming abilities captures minute by minute.
Developing her craft at home and beyond, whilst establishing a name for herself through her time stilling numbers on Lethal Chops back in 2017. This girl shares, with her music, art nothing short of a beachside sunset or a wine on the riverside.
SADIVA is a chillers delight, and with that, I am glad to announce words with the beat-making wonder and "When U Cared" creative brainchild.

Thanks for that, so I'd like to start by asking, what got you into producing music in the first place? Was it a solo finding or were you encouraged by others to give it a go?
I feel deeply in love with classic Hip-Hop when I started working at a shoe store and, this was where I discovered J Dilla and his story which blew my mind and inspired the shit out of me.
I was also hanging out with some friends who had tried the art of beat-making so I got intrigued, to say the least.
Why the name SADIVA? And what does it mean to you?
SADIVA just clicked for me. I was smoking weed in my room whilst making beats and, I was like,
“okay, I have to come up with some sort of name for this project”
and I love the strain SATIVA so I thought I’d just wordplay it with diva.
How long have you been producing? Also, what is some of the attributes you find producing helps you strengthen within yourself that you find other avenues don't cover?
I have been producing for about 5 years now, I have been very unmotivated lately just due to my own reason.
I always like to have a smoke and a session to find my samples and then I like to sit and get down to the nitty-gritty.
Lately, I’ve been experimenting with a lot of different samplers and sythn’s just to get an idea of expanding my sound, it’s so interesting.
There’s so much I really don’t cover but DJing is helping me to understand a lot of genres of music that I thought I hated but I love them, which is making me expand more.
What inspires you to continue making beats?
I just love making music, its therapy for me.
Being able to go around the world and meet the scene too has been a
truly special molding for my 20’s and I’m blessed I’ve had these experiences,
I’d be silly to stop cause I’m really living my dream and that’s what keeps me going.
Let us go back to 2017 and discuss what's responsible for the creation of Lethal Chops? What pictures were you trying to paint with the tracklist? And also what was it like putting Lethal Chops together?
At this point I had been writing solidly for 2 years with only a few beats on compilations and SoundCloud, I had always wanted to put an album out cause I was proud of my work and after my trip to NYC in 2015/16
I met Soul Journal (one of my best friends) and he pushed for me to release something and did the masters and truly helped me with the whole process of the tracklist so he deserves a huge shout out cause without him who knows if I would have released anything.

Lethal Chops by Sadiva, Artwork by - Kitchen Wizards
Not much over a year later you released "Minutes" on Vinyl, through Inner Ocean Records.
A masterpiece of works that let everyone know you are here to stay. Somewhat like another Melbourne producer - Amin Payne, who nearly went on hiatus, but I believe he was someone like yourself who was drawn in by a mutual love to create, perpetuating goodness and works of art.
Thanks for this, Minutes is something you want to listen to for prolonged hours so again thank you.
What were the major differences between putting together Lethal Chops and Minutes? Also, how do you feel you had grown as an artist when releasing Minutes? Finally, what atmosphere were you trying to put together for your listeners with this second album release?
Thank you so much for saying that, I couldn’t be happier knowing that’s how you feel about a piece of my work. The major difference I guess was I had a bit of an idea of how I pictured Minutes and it had a bit more time and meaning go into the project.
With lethal chops, I just wanted to release something as I had been making so many beats at that point in time.
Minutes was very break up heavy also, I was heartbroken when finishing minutes, and a lot of last-minute tracks got added cause they just felt so much for me.
Plus, I just wanted to put something together that I was proud of and that people would find interesting, I wanted to make it like watching a film with your ears if that makes sense?
"Minutes" as said before, was made available on vinyl as previously Lethal Chops on Cassette. What is it about putting together and releasing physicals that you love most? Also, did Inner Ocean Record impact your appreciation for physical releases?
Physicals have always been really important to me, I’ve always collected cassettes, CDs, vinyl since I was young so to have something that was my own on vinyl was insane for me, I cried the day it arrived cause it was such a great achievement for me.
Do you have a close relationship with the artists that create your cover art and videos?
If so what allows that relationship to stay solid?
Ps, blessed stuff by the way.
Zomkashwak, STLNDRMS, and Lily.ingram (EN:recent name change) know what is up!
I have definitely got some amazing connections with the artists I work with, Lily was my housemate for a few years and we became close friends through that and I couldn’t have been anymore over the moon than to have her amazing work featured as apart of the WOW series, plus she’s an incredible woman I look up to.
As for Zomkashwak and STLMDRMS we became friends through artist nature and sharing the same love and passion’s, Zom did that album cover for Minutes and it was like he saw what was going on in my brain.
When I met STLNDRMS in Atlanta he hosted me for Controllerise and just showed me the most wholesome hospitality, I was stoked to be able to work with him on the video for “WIT U” and also do a live set on his channel beats and chill, he’s a huge inspiration not only to me but everyone in this community and to give back as he does is incredible, STLNDRMS is gonna be huge and he deserves it more than anyone in the scene.
I also have many close connections with a lot of the people I work with and I’m blessed to have that network of people.
You work closely with the collective and platform Inner Ocean Records based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada a fair distance from Melbourne, Australia.
What inspired this long-distance relationship between yourself and Inner Ocean and how do you guys keep present?
When I started making beats they were one of the first labels I looked up to, it was a goal of mine to release something with them, I just loved what they were doing for the culture.
I got my first self-released tape manufactured through them and after that, we worked on WOW and Minutes together and Cory and I just had a great bond, I feel honoured to have worked with them so closely for a few years.
Inner Ocean Records, being inspired by their surroundings, (In their own words Calgary "is a city surrounded by hundreds of kilometers of prairies, mountains, and forest") did that connect with you when you decided to link up for projects like "Minutes"?
Also, how do you feel your surroundings in Melbourne impact and inspire the beats you create?
I’d say Minutes was most inspired in New York and Melbourne.
Melbourne and New York both have a gritty feeling with all the graffiti and live music going on everywhere and every time I go to NYC I start writing so much.
I was also going through some heartbreak at the time and a lot of what I was listening to was sampled in the album, a lot of the lyrics just spoke to me and It was curing me.

What environmental factors in your home life bring out the best in your music?
When I’m at home I sit down with a joint, put some nice lighting on and I have a lot of plants in my studio, I need to have a chill environment to start writing and since minutes I’ve moved to a new room in the house, I have been writing so many different genres and it's crazy how a new environment can start sparking something different.
I also wanted to bring up something new to myself [lofi.family] a collective via Facebook and Soundcloud that is dedicated to positive interaction between artists and listeners within the lofi community.
You released two tracks for [lofi.family] "When U Cared" and "Substance" both truly well received. How did this interaction come about and what was it like for you making both these tracks?
Check [lofi.family] out here -

I have been friends with Griff since he started lofi.fam, I was one of the first members in the group and Griff has always just greeted me with open arms,
He asked me for a couple of beats and of course, I had to support what he was doing because he supports everyone, I cant wait to meet that man.
Does either of them hold any personal meaning? As sound-wise, I feel the tracks seem to pull you in opposite directions if you get what I mean? Mellow chords opposed to boom-bap head nods.
Was this intentional?
When I made “When you cared” it was actually a flip I originally did for a 21 savage song, just a bit of fun and then the lofi.fam wanted a track so  I sent that over
And with substance, I said to myself ill make a really lofi sounding song instead of boom-bap and I thought that suited the vibe for Lofi fam ps: LOVE YOU GRRIFF!
I guess it was intentional for lofi.fam but when I made them I didn’t really have a concept.

We have to discuss WoW Volumes 1 and 2 your "Women Of The World" compilations released on cassette followed by vinyl that ever so sweetly showcases over 30 Female Beat-Smiths world-wide, much love.
This creative pursuit was put together to also raise awareness and funds for organizations dedicated to helping re-home and comfort homeless women (due to various circumstances) in America and Australia.
So much respect for your innovation on this continuing project.
With these releases, you have raised over $8000 for charity and with that, have inspired so many to stay true to the gift of giving, thank you.
What inspired you to branch out and curate WoW? How did you go about making this idea a reality? And what is the overall message you are trying to get across with "Women Of The World" an all-female Tracklist?
I was sick of seeing shady comments about the rise of women in the community, I’m thankful our Lofi community is so open to everyone but not all beat communities are and it was bothering me.
I see women as very powerful people and I love all women pursuing their craft for them and no one else.
I wanted to share these incredible women’s tracks with the world and our beautiful community and give something back through that.
It’s important to make everyone in community shine and I wanted something for the ladies as it was around International Women’s Day and that inspired me to just push forward, and I thought this is something I really want to push and I could not have expected to go as well as it did, it has been incredible.
Finally on the subject, what do you feel WoW's creation tries to inspire most in both males and females creating and listening within the beat scene?
I just hope WOW inspired women to put their stuff out there and for men to be accepting and support that,
I feel like that was successful, I saw so many people just bigging up each other when wow was released and creating that sense of community and safety is so important to me.
Volumes 1 and 2 featured artists like handycat, Yourself, Eevee, India On Da Track, and Seneca B, all artists that show lofi and production, in general, allow so many opportunities to be diverse.
I saw recently that you are taking in submissions for Volume 3 which I am sure will encourage head bops world-wide.
Can you give us a sneak-peek into the curator's mind as to what we can expect with Volume 3? What feels and approaches will you be going for with this release?
I’m not going to lie, This year has fucked me uup with WOW,
I just couldn’t focus on it, I have a lot going on with my own career, and its really taking away from my time with WOW which I’m really upset about but I need to take one thing at a time.
I have to give a huge shout out to Emy Zulazna for helping me with everything this year.
I am feeling way more motivated now I’m getting used to the lockdowns but I’m not even sure I’ll get VOL.3 out this year, but I hope I get to.
Just remember that when you're focusing on a project you can get caught up so hard in other people, you need to remember to take some time out for yourself when focusing on these projects cause it can get quite overwhelming.
Going back to 2016 I have to mention your [Episode 2] Ride With It Set. Along with Amin Payne and ohwell's sets, yours is often bouncing through my speakers so thank you for doing Australia justice with your sensei ways <3
How did that opportunity come about and what was it like performing for an online audience, in a moving car opposed to a live set on stage?
Thank you so much, ride with it was so much fun, but it was the day after I had been to a grand final that Western Bulldogs won so I was very dusty in the car that day.
The opportunity arose as I knew the guys who started it prior to them doing it and they approached me and asked if I’d be keen and I was already there haha.
It was super strange being in a car doing beats, people in other cars wondering what you're doing and not being able to see the SP buttons cause of the light was a little struggle to, I wish ride with it was still around! RIP RIDE WITH IT!

Ride with it Episode 2 - SADIVA -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC1cICa4cUc&t=2s
You've performed in venues all over the world now, and with each performance, I am sure you learn something new about not only yourself but also your environments.
Can you share what it is like being on stage and also how you keep your nerves in check when you're tweaking those buttons?
Being on stage for me is like another persona, I go to another planet, it’s like when Usagi/Serena turns into sailor moon.
When I'm Djing or playing beats live I become one with the music and its more than a show to me, this is me representing my feelings on stage.
Each city I play also is like learning something new about the culture,
I am so lucky with the opportunities I have.
What environments do you like to create through your live shows?
And also what has been your favourite show to date and why?
I like to create a safe environment where anyone can feel like we can chat after the show, when people come out to see me I am so grateful and it always turns into a bit of a party towards the end of the shows.
I’ve had so many amazing shows but up to date, I’d say when I played in Turin, Italy with my good friend Siccarone beats, that was life-changing.
It was an illegal warehouse party and it was packed, I couldn’t believe the show and it was just so much fun I can’t wait to go back after all of this is over
Musical Recommendations?
At the moment I’m really just feeling a lot of different stuff, I have a few playlists made on Spotify which is probably best to see what I’m really into cause holy dang it’s a big ol mix bag.
Recommendations Away From Music?
Look after your loved ones, your animals, and please look after each other.
The world is in a crazy place so let’s make everyone feel safe in these crazy times.
Any New Releases or Shows coming up that we should keep an ear and eye out for?
Look, since corona, all my big announcements have kind of been put on pause which is a real shame because I was really looking forward to this year.
However, I do have some really big news coming and I am not allowed to say much more than that. I hope this new thing I’m working on really helps our community shine, even more, I wanna talk so much more about it but I can’t, so stay tuned!!!
If so can you share a few details?
My lips are sealed but I’ll be able to announce soon.
Any Last Words?
Chicken butt..

Words with Twin Nemesis
Tumblr media
The United States is the homeland of a lot of the creatives we've had words with over the years, and Soph and Sylv, the masterminds behind Twin Nemesis are just two more US beat-smiths and creatives who just so happen to be cohesively moving sound-waves over in the USA.
The girls are tweaking valleys of bass that display a musical landscape that is infused with funk and wave wonder and this duo will intrigue like the piper, tame ones head to bop and, damn feet to tap with their select but distinguishing variety of tracks.
Twin Nems sound will either have you wishing you were out in an underground nightclub, bouncing by the speakers or, chilling at home on a rainy day with a hot cuppa. It can go both ways with these talents, something that's not easy to encourage, but these beat-smiths do so in the most pleasing matter.
Keeping their minds well and in tune away from producing through their studies in University and Med School. These two are not only fuelling their minds but the minds of their listeners worldwide.
Thank you Twin Nem and please don't let the studies led to a musical disappearance, Bass needs you both to continue your relationship and we need you to stay together, for our speakers' sake.
Much love and enjoy words with these unique talents.

Listen to Twin Nemesis, Saying Hello on Spotify -https://open.spotify.com/artist/0aSDNbyGRzbragp1DE9ZKk
Hey, Twin Nemesis thank you so much for taking the time to share words. I thought we would start will a few quick questions.
Favourite Food: Sophie - Mac and Cheese Sylvie - I love food, so that's gonna be hard! I'd say sushi, vanilla berry cake, gummy candy or Thai food :). Oh, and a juicy burger and onion rings. Favourite Beverage:   Sophie - Mojito ;P Sylvie - Plain and simple, water! Stay hydrated, folks! Last track you listened to: Sophie - The Suburbs- Mr Little Jeans Sylvie - Jon Casey's 20/20 mix! That part at 1:30 is insane!! A childhood memory in regards to music: Sophie - The first song I remember is Karma Police..my mom was playing it in the car when I was like a few months old and it stuck with me. I heard it again maybe when I was 14? It was like a shot of lightening. I felt this nostalgia. It was insane. It's my favorite song.   Sylvie - Without a doubt, driving with my dad in the car to Sergio Mendes and the Beatles. I grew up on Bossa Nova and Classic Rock :) First Album you ever purchased: Sophie - Ok Computer  Sylvie - Sheesh, I can't recall to be honest! Most likely something from Sergio Mendes. Last Album you purchased: Sophie - Don't remember tbh  Sylvie - I stream on Spotify, so I haven't quite been purchasing! Views on Cheese: Sophie - Give me all the cheese, just not the weird french ones Sylvie - Cheese is godly. The music you were listening to in Middle School: Sophie - Dubstep (UKF, etc) Sylvie - In Middle School, I was a huge fan of dubstep and drum and bass! UKF releases were the bulk of my then ITunes (rip) library! Still love both genres, especially the soulfulness of liquid drum n bass! What you like to do in your downtime: Sophie - Run around, play videogames, music Sylvie - I'm almost constantly studying, to be honest. However, if I do have a moment, I'll be reading medical journals or watching operations. I want more than anything to be an Emergency Room Physician, so I'm constantly reading articles about the ER when I find good ones.
I'll also often hop on a shift to volunteer for Crisis Text Line, a truly powerful platform where you can be there for people in difficult times <3. Spreading love and reaching out is incredibly important to me. I also spend a lot of hours as well training for fencing and at the gym for cross-training... Not much "free time" I suppose, but that's exactly how I like it! I'm a busy bee. :D Your ideal feast would consist of: Sophie - Pizza, mac n cheese, nugs. Basically all the foods that will send me to the grave. Sylvie - Probably too much food to realistically procure for one feast.
Thanks for that, so I'd like to start by asking, how did you both meet? Had you known each other long before you started making music together? Sylvie - We met in fencing in middle school and instantly became best friends. We just clicked! About a year into our friendship, I mentioned in fencing practice that I produced music, and Sophie wanted to join. We learned the ropes of Maschine together, and she picked up Logic faster than I did. Sophie proved to be a natural, and things just flowed from there!
Sophie - We went to the same middle/high school but met during fencing practice! We both fenced sabre for a couple of years and bonded through that. So probably like 2-3 years before we started making music.
How did your musical relationship start and at the beginning were you both making your own music separately? How long have you been making music together? You've been releasing music on Soundcloud for 5 or so years under Twin Nemesis. Had you been making music together even before releases such as "Nocturne"? Could you share a memory from your early days making music together that has inspired you to continue creating? Sylvie - Sheesh, I would say it's been 6 years. We waited a year before releasing. We're both perfectionists. Before Twin Nemesis, I was releasing creations on my personal account. Sophie vibed with them, and before long we were producing together. In high school we would have "production nights" where we would stay up all night and produce something on one computer, one Maschine. Right after? Dance party time. These have been some of my best memories to date. Sophie - Sylvie taught me everything about how to use Logic and Maschine when we first started! I remember during fencing practice she was talking about producing beats and I thought that was so unique and interesting since I didn't know anyone who did that. We started hanging outside of fencing at her house experimenting with the Maschine and I just fell in love.
What equipment do you guys use to create your sound? Also if it applies, what musical instruments do you both play? Does knowing how to play an instrument necessarily benefit someone trying to make beats more? Sylvie - I have background in drumming, so I gravitated towards the Maschine. I'm actually a classically trained violinist, and have been playing for 16 years! I also play the bass and drums. In terms of helping beat-making, I'm not quite sure. Plenty of really legendary beat-makers don't play other instruments-- I don't think it's needed to play anything. But I like to incorporate classical or jazz elements into my music when I can. Sophie -  I do not actually play any instruments but I use Maschine as well as Logic and Ableton. I wish I understood the theory behind a lot of the music being put out today but playing by ear has worked out so far.  Could you share a paragraph of what Twin Nemesis represents to you individually and also what Twin Nemesis represents to you both collectively? What inspired the name Twin Nemesis? Love it. Sylvie - Its really special to be able to make music with your best friend. To me, Twin Nemesis represents a creative outlet where we can express our feelings through a medium that has no words.
We're able to pinpoint that feeling, and hone in on the sonic experience that can deliver a sense of it into our listeners. I want to be able to uplift them, be there for them, show them that they're not alone, be their shoulder to cry on, and help them if I can with our music.
To me, it's my hope that we can help heal people with the joy of music, (cheesy as it sounds). There's no greater joy than helping others, and I hope we can do that not just in our day- to-day lives, but in our music as well.
Sophie came up with Twin Nemesis actually, and it's ironic, because I'm an actual twin. We are far from nemeses, my twin is a best friend as well, and I'm extremely lucky to have her. So there's no connection there, Sophie just thought it sounded cool. She's creative as heck!
Sophie - I think I came up with the name and honestly I think it came from the fact that Sylvie and I just looked very different (blonde vs brunette), yet we're both girls so I wanted to keep that dichotomy but also, yeah, it just sounds cool haha.
For me Twin Nemesis is a great way to relax. I just finished my BS at Cornell University and am starting medical school at UCSF so my life tends to be very busy and stressful. Making music really grounds me and I found during the most stressful times of my career I tend to create the best music.   Going back to your track "Nocturne" I wanted to discuss it a little further as it is Twin Nems' earliest release that I felt contrasted it's follow up release on Soundcloud delightfully. That follow-up release was "Nostalgia". Were the contrasts in these two releases intentional or are the tracks unrelated? Can you share what making Nostalgia and Nocturne was like? And what you were trying to portray with each track? Sylvie - The two of those tracks were meant to be lofi hip-hop-esque. They were meant to evoke feelings of, well, nostalgia, from two different waveforms. For these two, we busted out our Maschines, and went for something as groovy as it was soulful.
The process was relatively simple, as we were still figuring out the ropes- chop up a sample, lay down a bass-line, and of course, drum out a groovy, swinging drum pattern. That was really it, admittedly, but we felt that there was a special soulfulness in these tracks, so we released them. Sophie - Skipping, tbh don’t remember much other than I was going thru a bad breakup and these songs helped haha I just wanted to add, back in 2015 Twin Nemesis released a track called Chapel of the Devil via Bandcamp and the sounds displayed in that beat could easily nurse a rap, you guys had skill even back then, much love. What was it like for you making Chapel of the Devil and how do you feel your style has adapted over the years since? Do you feel more confident with each release over time, or do you feel you were more confident with your earlier releases? Sylvie - Mmmm. Good question! Sophie was more involved with that one. She found the sample and chopped it nicely. I can't really take much credit for that. In terms of style, I've began to shift into more bass-music, experimental types of music and have started to produce a fair amount of lo-fi hip hop.
What does making a beat do for you? Does it help you in any personal sort of way like offer an escape? What is it that you think draws more and more people into wanting to create their own beats? Sylvie - Making a beat is an outlet where I don't have anything to lose. When I'm making music, I tap into my emotions, and if not mine, my boyfriend's, my close friends', the worlds', or even my dog's (I'm obsessed with her). More and more people are gravitating towards beatmaking because it's become more culturally relevant with the rise of Soundcloud- the ability to share your creativity with the world is unique, and the fact that everyone has access to that upload button makes music production rather appealing.
We live in a world of music-- it's all over us. To be able to create your own tunes has been an ever-present drive of humanity-- it's visceral. I gotta give one of my best friends, (an extremely talented classical pianist), Phoebe some credit for coming up with a quote that sums up why music itself is so powerful, especially in times like these--
"There’s nothing like the comfort of listening to a song that gets you. And that’s why music is so powerful, it can relate to any kind of person and make him or her feel safe and understood."
People are looking to make that song that gets them, to find that exact feeling that resonates with them and express it without words, in, what my boyfriend Jackson, (a phenomenal guitarist), describes as a medium that is visceral and can touch each and every person that listens differently.
He believes some of the beauty of music is the ambiguity of the meaning as well. I had to credit these two here for their deeply insightful thoughts.
Sophie - Refer to previous question, my life is very academically stressful so I use it as an escape away from the pressures of school. Twin Nemesis is also responsible for some bass-driven mixes that are just timeless. Listened to your minimix "That Wavy College minimix" which you both made two years ago and it is still relevant, thank you! Had you both always been into mixing or was it something you picked up along the Twin Nem journey? What gets you in the mood to want to create a mix and what inspires the tracklist you curate? Sylvie - YESSSSSS BASS MUSIC :) Mixing was something we picked up on the way. It really depends on who is making the mix. If it's Soph, it will be more melodic and rap-driven usually.
If it's me, it will be all about the drums. These are pretty consistent distinctions. The track-list is based on what has me bobbing my head and making the stank face at the moment. :)
Sophie - Sylvie makes most of the mixes and I loooove listening to them, especially when I'm studying. Her music taste really vibes with mine. I've tried making mixes but have yet to post anything....maybe soon... Twin Nemesis will also be doing a beatsfortheill mix which we are super humbled about, thank you both. What can our readers and listeners expect with this up and coming mix? Sylvie - You'll see ;) Bringing the timeline forward to a year ago, we have to discuss your track snüp, one of my personal favourites by Twin Nem that I feel perfects the sound you'd want any beat to create when you're trying the lay back, much love. How did you go about creating snüp, how long did it take you guys to make and what inspired it's creation? Sylvie - It was rather simple as well! Snoop Dogg acapella + sample chopped up + infectious drum groove + bass. Done. I would say it took us about 3 days actually.
The both of us love jazz, old school hip hop, and soul music, so we wanted to integrate the sound of old school hip hop with more "new school".
Adding the vinyl-ridden sample to a Snoop Dogg vocal was a contrast that we found worked very well, so we followed through with the idea and released it.
Sophie - I'll let Sylvie answer this one You also released a track called Echoes of the Past in the same year and it was a track that showed me that you guys could tackle any genre. It's chilled, slightly romantic and soothing on a lofi lovers ears, thank you for creating this track. What inspires your shifts in sound in general from genre to genre? And on the subject of this particular track, what was it like to put together? Were you trying to share anything subtly with this release? Sylvie - Shifts in genre are because of our extremely diverse tastes in music. We listen to music spanning almost all genres, (save country, and for me, indie).
This allows us to want to produce along the gamut of vibes! When we're especially enjoying lo-fi, like we were when we were making Echoes of the Past, we'll make lo-fi. If we're inspired by left-field bass/trap, we'll make something like Hello.Jpeg. It all depends, and there really is no specific reason for why make what we make, when we make it. It just happens that way! I wish I could say that I was trying to convey something...  In regards to music-making, what draws you in about a certain sound or vocal that makes you want to sample it? Sylvie - For me it's all about the groove. You know, when a groove is just *so infectious* that you can't help but bob your head and get those chills down your spine and turn the volume up higher.
I'm a sucker for creamy keys as well, like a Rhodes sample, the Korg Triton, jazz chords, 7ths. I love old soul and jazz music :)
But also, I equally enjoy warping glitches and harsh sounds. For drum samples? Drums. Must. Slap. They have to cut through the mix and be powerful and beefy, with a liberal amount of syncopation added for that off-kilter groove.   Sophie -  I love oldies and sampling classical music, so if I'm listening to a random track and hear a catchy melody I download it right away and create something with it. I also am drawn to sadder more melancholy melodies. Not sure why but it's always been like that. The song that introduced me to your sound was "Hello.Jpeg" and I was blown away with this track. The intro reminded of something N.E.R.D could have produced and the bass will convert any avid bass listener, thank you again. What were you going for with this release? Did it take long to put together? Also, what do you enjoy most about this track? Sylvie - Awww sheesh, thanks! We were going for my favorite musical element, bounce. For me, that's what makes a track (in bass music).
It's gotta have that bounce. We'd been listening to Jon Casey, Tsuruda, Explore, Mr. Carmack, etc. for ages, and were hoping to achieve a similar bouncy, stompy feel.
This track by far took the longest to put together-- probably upwards of 2 weeks? There were a lot of elements there. As for the last question here, I think you can tell what I'm proudest of in this track.... (hint: the bounce). Sophie - We love experimenting with different genres and Hello.Jpeg was our jump. It was extremely fun and very natural to make...we're probably going to create more of that type.  Do you have any Musical Recommendations you could share? Sylvie - Ahhh, yes. I'll go by genre.
In terms of bass and future beats, the "20/20" mix by Jon Casey is impeccable. Check out that 1:30 time stamp. "Spit That" by Chee has that groove and bass that keeps me wanting to come back for more. "Neptune" by Sam Gellaitry has an incredible groove in the second part that will have you bobbing your head, with that lush bass swirling around. You really can't go wrong with Mo Vibez either. "Hammer" by Tsuruda, "Deception" by Herzeloyde, and "React" by Chromonicci have that signature bounce that I love as well, I'm always scouting for bouncy songs.
In terms of more hip-hoppy stuff, I'm gonna have to recommend Tek.lun's "Seshat". It has that bossa nova feel I've always loved, blended with hard-hitting drums.
Drum and Bass! "Progression" by Flite. Anything by Dawn Wall. It's rolling and soulful. Speaking of soulful, soul!
Tom Misch nails it every time, and I cannot recommend Gareth Donkin's track, "Catharsis" enough. It's beautiful. See for yourself. Classic rock, bossa nova... okay, should I just make a Spotify playlist for y'all?
This could be too long.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/27nkDj0eqPrzOl2CLGNikJ?si=btVmbVLST5SOFRqSgDs6Fw Sophie - I love Sasha Marie mixes. I've found so many songs and artists through her soundcloud page. Give it a listen. Any up and coming releases we should keep a lookout for? Sylvie - Again, you'll see ;)
Any Last Words? Sylvie - Yeah! An important part of my creative process and just, my life in general, are my amazing boyfriend and best friends, and my family, (yes, that includes my dog, of course).
Just wanna give them a shoutout here. They're always cheering me on, and I'm absolutely so blessed to have them in my life. I cannot thank them enough. Programs in Colour - Weirddough
Tumblr media
Weirddough out of Las Vegas, USA has produced a collection of ever-adapting, sometimes witty, yet always delicate array of beats that just have to be showcased.
These beats can be found displayed flawlessly in Weirddough's newest release "Programs in Colour", an ode to Hip-Hop and storytelling.
Weirddough shows how years of dedication to sound can uplift one's story-telling within music. Something I feel Weirddough has mastered, as even before "Programs in Colour" Weirddough had story-telling notions with releases like "good juju" and "elevatormuzik pt. 2", attempting and succeeding with expressing personal experiences and feels through music in a way that relates to the listener.
Soulful creations and genuine honesty are what you'll find when you hit play on "Programs in Colour".
An artist showcasing sound in the most soothing manner.
With songs like "Creepin'" adding RnB flow that has the head bopping and soul pole dancing, then add songs like "Rainforest Sleep" which is a favourite for me, as it has you laughing in the first few second yet head-bopping the next, not to mention the feminine vocals that just introduce the following track "Jellyfish Bounce" in such an engaging manner.
Tumblr media
Album Artwork created by Lucas Ybarra aka lwkylky
The whole album, track one to twenty-four played through one after another creates a musical wonderland suited to car drives, study, and chills. You won't go wrong with Weirddough on the rotation.
Weirddough's use of vocal samples and show snippets add a sense of enjoyment and anticipation for the next track in play, which is kind of a must with beats, the anticipation for more.
Good vibes, humor, and all things Hip-Hop is what you can expect with "Programs in Colour" so don't miss it.
Also, for the month of June Weirddough and his collective
"The Rabbit Hole" will be donating all funds received this month from all their collective releases to "Black Lives Matter Global Network" to help aid those in need at this time.
Add some of The Rabbit Hole Collectives musical blessings to your personal rotation and make a difference at the same time, it's beautiful really. Thank you Weirddough for not only making one of my new go-to albums but also for making a move with a cause, beatsfortheill appreciates you.

Words with Katie Dutch
Tumblr media
“My art is about standing up for what I believe in and I’m very much into respect for women - women being empowered not being used etc.
I really find any injustice hard to take - when the strong take advantage of those weaker than them, from bullies to terrible abuse. I try to do art that makes others feel good, reminds them of beauty, history, fun etc but also my work has layers of meaning - some pieces touch on darker concerns but I don’t want to dwell on them & offer no hope.
… basically I’m about standing up for good, protecting others & nature, enjoying things that don’t harm others & offering hope/ a moment of joy”
-Katie Dutch
(All art displayed was created by Katie Dutch)
Katie Dutch has the most insightful imagination when it comes to producing a fine piece of art, worthy of display in any home or business.
What I enjoy most about Katie’s pieces is the way she incorporates that strong sense of feminine energy & compliments woman’s beauty and essence so respectfully and vibrantly in a manner that empowers woman & the classic beauties of our vibrant and ever changing world.
So enjoy a cold drink and the humble words of Katie Dutch the artist, the creative & one of many talented Australian artist on the rise, much love
Tumblr media
Hey Katie thanks heaps for taking the time to share words you’re a really inspiring artist . How about we start with a few basics and get to know you a little better,
Favourite Artists: Picasso, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Joseph Cornell, Arthur Boyd, Jeffrey Smart & Tracey Emin
Favourite Movie: I love so many - I really like action movies like Terminator etc, Fight Club, True Romance, Mad Max, Blade Runner - the list goes on & on and includes Shawshank Redemption. I get a lot of my ideas from movies and love being told a good story paired with great visuals
Favourite place to relax: At home doing art, running with loud music in my ears and the beach when no one else is there.
A childhood memory that impacted the art that you currently create: Travelling with my family in a double decker bus, living in the bush in a mud house with no electricity, hens, animals etc and listening to my dad sing & play guitar - the lyrics painted pictures in my mind.
What inspires you to continue creating: For the above reason it’s great therapy, a way to work through ideas or things that concern me. I get very passionate about things I see as unjust and art is my voice. The drive to have a say and also the enjoyment I get from creating & connecting with others pushes me to keep going. Sometimes doing art can be disheartening as it’s a lots of energy and expense with seemingly little monetary gain but I can’t seem to stop!
Favourite way to connect and calm before putting together your art pieces: Often I do the art to calm myself, I can get a little depressed or manic & either need a pick-me-up or calm-me-down, art is what grounds me and makes me focus. It’s a discipline that brings my mind some balance/ peace.
Favourite city or location: I would dearly love to travel and now that my son is nearly twelve, hopefully I can make this answer more exciting next time you ask. I grew up in Tasmania which is lovely. I’ve been to a few countries but I really want to see Cuba & Venice! (the wish list is long)
Biggest inspirations: My Sculpture & Printmaking teachers at the University of Tasmania. Now it’s music, movies, pop culture, fashion and looking on IG at everything from selfies to high art.
What you enjoy doing in your down time: I love to run and walk - wander around just looking & thinking. Ideally I would love adventures, jumping out of planes, climbing tall mountains, deep sea diving, big wave surfing etc.
Views on current media news at moment: I watch a lot of current event programs and I’m interested in politics and world issues. I’ll reframe from giving my personal views. Over-all I’m very grateful to live in Australia, our system is far from perfect but compared to most places on earth it’s a great place to be. I could write a six page essay but will stay neutral and let my art talk for me. That said I hate injustice, corruption, cruelty, greed, the environment being ruined…. I’d better stop :)
Tumblr media
Thanks for that Katie, so how about we start from the beginning, have you always been a bit of and artist? And has there been any other forms of art you’ve created or worked on before heading towards your current collage works?
When I was little I was always daydreaming, dressing up & making tree houses. I’ve always had a big imagination and loved to draw and make things. I would say art was always my favourite subject at  school and I enjoyed being OK at it, as I found reading and spelling hard. I did a Fine Arts Degree at the University of Tasmania and majored in Sculpture & Printing making. I really enjoy sculpture & etching but collage is a much quicker medium for IG and having a daily say. I often have a point to make, regardless of if others see/ understand it and I can make a collage within three - six hours whereas a sculpture or copper plate etch takes me months for one piece. Collage is a quick way to have a say or respond to a recent thought, event, concern or inspiration.
What inspires you to continue creating:
For the above reason it’s great therapy, a way to work through ideas or things that concern me.
How do you go about creating your pieces? I’ve always wondered how you put your marvels together they’re so beautiful, do you use digital prints at all or is it all usually free hand creations?
My collages are made from real paper & paint. I wish I knew how to use Photoshop etc  but apart from some apps/ filters added to the final scanned image they are hand made. I make them by hand with a number of cut out images, then add some paint & details, then scan the collage for IG.
Where do you draw all your inspiration from when you came up with your particular style per say and how long have you been working on such collage pieces?
I haven’t really stopped working on creative ideas for the last 20 years. My skills & ideas are limited so I have to work hard. At times I’ve needed a break and had a few months off but I always come back to creating. I would love to discover what makes a successful & impacting image. There are so many images now that to come up with a style that stands out & impacts people is hard (maybe impossible for me - but I’ll try). I probably spend about 18 hours a day thinking about art & nine - eighteen hours doing it. This intensity has just been over the last year and a half but in the past I’ve also put in a lot of time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aspects of your pieces that I really love are how you incorporate what I like to call "vintage memories” or flashback moments within your art ie in one of your pieces you paint the Emerald City from the classic Wizard of Oz, in another Falcore from The Never Ending Story and also through out your pieces many other elements which just shout 1950s/60s vibes, beautiful really as I’m also a lover of vintage trinkets myself.. What draws you to that particular time and style and on a random note what are some of your favourite places to shop or source your vintage materials or trinkets around Sydney or online?
I have a huge collection of vintage ‘treasure’. I have not bought anything for about two years as I have far too much stuff. However in the past I was always at op shops, markets, looking in council clean-up etc etc Always collecting little vintage bits & pieces to make my sculptures and give me ideas. I also have a huge collection of antique paper & I traded Victorian trade cards & die cuts for a number of years. I love the memories vintage pieces inspire and the feeling you get from seeing an old childhood favourite movie or toy. I want to inspire that feeling or memory when people view my art - that magic time/ of being in the moment.
I discovered your art through Instagram and was blown away the first time I saw one of your posts that incorporated Buddha, I remember running to show my flat mate your art as she is also an artist like yourself, we were so impressed from first glance, really inspiring stuff as I’m sure you hear all the time :) in regards to your online postings, how do you feel Instagram has helped you get your art form out there a viewed and what would you say to other artists striving to get there piecesand heard online or beyond?
IG is a great way to connect with others and give & get encouragement but it’s very hard to make it pay. However it’s a great way to get your art viewed by people all around the world, which is very cool!
It’s hard work to be self motivated which you really need to be as a creative person. You have to have motivation other than fame and fortune as there is a very good chance it will never arrive. My motivation is I enjoy it, it’s therapy, my voice and I believe in helping/ trying to inspire others. Hopefully I can inspire a few people and in return they inspire others - keep the good vibes rolling!
You also have another page dedicated to  more personal posts & your side interest photography called for_ever_free which also expresses your unique & talented ways could you share a little bit about that page and your favourite memories in regards to it? You share family photos too which are also sweet, how do you feel you family impacts the art you create and is your family on the arty side as well?
I wish I could take a decent photo but thanks for calling my humble snaps photography. I started to feel very limited with doing just collage and when I added selfies or personal photos to kitscheart I noticed some people unfollowed or didn’t get it. I felt pressured to do what people wanted and considered leaving IG. Then I realised I could open another account and do what I wanted. It made me love the collage again and gave me a visual space to work through ideas and get feedback from like-minded people & friends. My Dad and sister where at Art School with me. My other sister & my brother are also very creative. My mum is a legend who helps look after me & my son while I create - she encourages.
In your spare time away from your art what do you also enjoy doing? Are there any places on the Northern Beaches or around Sydney that you would recommend we all check out nature wise or treat wise?
Yes this area of Sydney is awesome - Visitors should go to Palm Beach, walk to the lighthouse and have a coffee at the Boathouse. Actually all the beaches around here are great and a ferry ride from Manly to the City is wonderful. Once there it’s a short walk to a number of galleries and the beautiful Botanical Gardens
Do you have a favourite quote or saying that you feel really sticks and motivates you in regards to life in general?
Sometimes when it all seems to hard I say to myself 'Make pain your friend’! Basically be tough and keep going regardless and try to stay young at heart. And I really believe in doing to others what you want done to you.. 'Do unto others…’ And I try very hard to forgive others and no get old and bitter - to understand & see the bigger picture… hard to do but worth a go.
Tumblr media
You come across as a rather spiritual and intune lady which is why I feel I’m also so drawn to your art and art style, if so which elements of spirituality to you follow or incorporate into your day to day living?
I’m always thinking about the great beyond and my inspiration and drive certainly comes from a belief in something bigger than myself and the physical. Like politics I’d rather let the art talk - I find talking about politics and religion gets me into trouble and it’s hard to convey in a few sentences. However your observations are correct and the spiritual side of existence is highly important to me & of more value than material wealth (for me).
Back on topic in regards to your photography, your landscape shots really portray a lovely vibe and seem to share a lot in regards to your persona, I sense your very intune with your environment and enjoy the outdoors does your son get involved
On your journeys when you take landscape photos or do you tend to trek it alone? Does your journeys inspire a lot of your art and help trigger your imagination?
Yes I love the outdoors and as a child and teenager was always outdoors and in the water. I love bush walking, rock climbing etc - although since having my son I’ve been less adventurous due to circumstances. My son enjoys the outdoor but he is at the age where he doesn’t really want to go walking with me unless we’re on holiday. So for my IG photos I’m mainly off by myself, walking & thinking. The photos I take certainly inspire my art, the colour of the sky, shape of the clouds etc
We love to embrace culture, arts, spirituality & music here at beatsfortheill as we feel such areas provide such a beautiful ground for growth and expression, would you care to share your favourite topics/musical talents & spiritual leaders in these areas?
I have always struggled to find earthly heros. So often when I look up to someone or the world tells me they are great/ winners/ a guru I find out later they are just a flawed but talented human - and I get disappointed. That said I don’t want to sound negative. Some of the best people are not well know, they go through life quietly helping others or the environment. I like humble, real people who sacrifice a lot, not for recognition or fame but to make a difference. For that reason I don’t have a list but in saying that there are many talented people I respect & try and learn from - I just also know they are human like the rest of us.
In regards to Instagram do you have any other fellow pages or artists you could recommend others check out? What do you enjoy checking out over the inter web?
As above I love following real people, people with heart & soul. I love seeing great art & musicians online too. However I find they’re so popular that they don’t have time to respond or notice others. As an artist I really enjoy feedback & banter with people as it helps with ideas & is fun. I recommend following people on IG who encourage & inspire you, that will be different for everyone. A mix of friends & people who push you forward
Tumblr media
In regards to your makeup art & leg art what started it all of for you and how did you get into it?
Good question - I was probably frustrated or having a bad day and got the paint out and started throwing it at myself.
I also look at so many other artists and images, that probably triggered the idea. I’m actually very shy in real life and would never wear a bikini to the beach! So it’s fun to express myself with paint, it’s art therapy!
I know it must be hard to talk about your talent so openly but I just want to say what you’re doing is really inspiring, a lot of Australian and international artists/art appreciators far and wide are really feeling on what you’re creating, what do you have to say to all your followers in regards to your art & what are some inspiring last words you would like to share with our followers here at beatsfortheill?
Truly I’m very humble that you like my art, it means a lot. Doing art can be awesome & disheartening all on the same day. However to succeeded  you have to keep going even when it seems impossible or the world doesn’t seem to care or see. I encourage others to have self belief and work very hard and then work some more. I’m still hoping the lucky part turns up because after the hard work & self belief you still need a little luck (I think). If I never make it I still aim to be kind and encourage others to reach their potential. Art is a vehicle to inspire beauty, thought, hope and maybe change for the better. It’s not really a means to glory and wealth for self if it is I’m doing it wrong (ha ha).

Words with mvnitou
Tumblr media
mvnitou out of Vienna, Austria is an artist that has embodied a sound that shifts and plays with expression in a manner likened to the weather. With keys that dabble like a breeze and drums that shift and alter like a storm, rolling of jazzy tones for days, sometimes laced with hip hop tweaks and bap. mvnitou's musical storm will add audio allure to anyone's personal playlist.
For mvnitou is a musician who is a master of his craft. Working musical storylines with his beat-tapes "SWEET EARTH" and "ASSORTED BEATS VOL. 5" both which show the range mvnitou's sound can carry, with taste and selection, ears will retreat on these freshly dusted treats.
Working single releases in a way that encourages listeners to tune in to all mvnitou beats instead of one and delivering variety with releases through labels and collectives such as Pueblo Vista and Lakeside.
Beats for rain and shine, indoors or out, mvnitou is a beatsmith who is capturing elements of sound that mimic the way nature can interact with the soul, satisfying the musical appetites of social hermits and beat appreciators worldwide.
Pleasing the mind and offering an escape from the day to day. mvnitou should be one of the beat-makers you peep for a catalog of all things Ambient, Hip-hop, and Jazz. It must be said that mvnitou sound soothes and shares something slightly romantic about music. The relationship between its creator and its listeners can encourage a following that shares a common interest and in this regard, it's a will to chill.
And sometimes memorable things happen when our surroundings are balanced, something you will be served with this beat-smith. Balance, delicate basslines, and taste beyond measure. Unwind and take in the words of the Austrian wonder, mvnitou. Much Love.
Hey mvnitou, thanks for taking the time to share words.
I thought we'd start things off with some random generals.
Favourite Food: Falafel
Favourite Beverage: Coffee
Last track you listened to: don dose – rauchen (on soundcloud)
Views on Gardening: I would love to have a garden. Unfortunately, I am limited to indoor plants
A childhood memory in regards to music: I have some vague memories of the old music studio my father worked in. When I was three or four I really liked to play in the room with all the acoustic foam in it.
Views on the power of positive thinking: I like to see things just how they appear. Therefore, I would say I see things more realistic than optimistic.
A track to chill to: Good Old Days – Emapea
A track to bounce to: Who Got Da Props – Black Moon
First Album you purchased: Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
Last track or Album you purchased: snares – short stories tape
Favourite Location: In front of my DAW / Altes AKH
A quote or saying that connects with you:
„Die Philosophen haben die Welt nur verschieden interpretiert; es kommt aber darauf an, sie zu verändern.“
The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it.
-Karl Marx
Thanks for that man, So how long have you been making beats?
Were you encouraged by someone to give it a go or was it a personal pursuit?
I started producing about 8 years ago. I was mainly producing EDM-Music in the beginning. After 3 to 4 years I began to explore the world of hip-hop which, as you can see, impacted my aim for producing.
My father was a producer himself and had a music studio. After some time, he introduced me to the world of music production, which immediately got me interested.
After that, I would say my personal pursuit and my drive to make even better music motivates me to this day.
What does your name mvnitou mean and represent?
For someone that hasn't heard your music before, can you express what makes your sound?
Manitou refers to a great spirit and describes a form of a higher being by Algonquian traditions.
I found this very inspiring and wanted to transcribe this imagination of a higher force into my music.
I would also describe my sound as very diversified.
My music is ranging from fast to slow, from a chilled vibe to fierce beats, while maintaining my approach on hip-hop beats.
Amongst the commotion that can come with a pandemic, you were able to piece together a collection of beats in just a week for your tape "together in isolation". I loved this tape. With its velvet-smooth introduction, bound in the bassline of it's following track.
What follows is soulful expressions, gat love affairs, and bounce followed by a dark and slightly sinister end track that is smothered in that sound hip hop heads love. Thank you for this tape.
Will there be a physical release made available for "together in isolation"?
What was the week you made "together in isolation" like for you?
And what inspired the tracks in the beat-tape?
Thank you for your kind words! This tape won’t be available as tape/physical release unless there would be a major demand for it.
The week I produced this tape was actually very hard and uncomfortable. I like to be free mentally and physically all the time, so the consequences of this “crisis” were very hard for me at first.
There was no theme I have followed with these beats; they really just came together in this said week.
Let's talk about one of your recent single releases, that came out just over a month ago through Gold Coast-based collective - Lakeside Collective (https://soundcloud.com/lakesidecollective) called "fragments" it is such a chilling track, thank you for this one.
On this release, you collaborated with lofi wonder - đon C (https://soundcloud.com/danieldonc), and like I said, the result was a chilling ode to creative expression.
You worked seamlessly together on "fragments", much love. Can you share how this Lakeside release came about? Had you and đon C previously worked together or was it a new creative relationship?
What was "fragments" like for you to make? What was it like to work with đon C on this track? And finally what were you collectively trying to express with this release?
This was actually the first track we produced together.
We have known each other for a while but weren’t been able to cook something up together.
Don C , as I know, likes the work mainly with the Roland SP 404. I sent him some loops I had chopped/created and a week later I almost had the finished track from him.
This collab was just one of many to follow.
Tumblr media
Staying amongst your recent releases, I have to mention your 2 track project "Orbit" released April 10th. The featured tracks are lush and both "Orbit" and "Way Back" play off one another in a layback sort of notion to galactic vibes and bumps, appreciated. Why the name "Orbit"? What was playing on your mind when you create these two tracks? And what did you enjoy most about putting this release together?
I can’t give you an exact answer there. I produced this track many weeks ago and just found it sitting lonely on my hard drive. The feeling and the atmosphere this track creates reminds me of outer space.
Therefore, the name orbit.
The special thing about this release is that it shows the two main styles I am following while producing beats. Orbit features mainly my melodies and contains just a few samples. Way Back is more on the sampled side with a focus on creative ways to manipulate the used samples.
You're a part of Lakeside Collective that I mentioned is based on the Gold Coast, Australia. Lakeside is dropping some seriously sweet tunes and I discovered your music through the track "Anakin" that you produced for Lakeside founder and Rapper Yzl.
Your work on this track was impeccable and Emphasize, Yzl and yourself together produced a sound unblemished, much love and thank you for your other releases for Lakeside as well.
"Liquid Motion" and "Essentials" are two Lakeside releases from separate Volumes that contrast one another beautifully. Whether intentional or not, you did so in such a fluent manner, nice work.
How did you link up with Lakeside Collective in the first place? What do you feel the collective is trying to share through music? And what were the following tracks like to make? Finally, what inspired their creation and names?
I think I joined Lakeside about two years ago. I can't really remember the process or what motivated me to link up, but it was really one of the best decisions I've made in my music career.
The dudes over at Lakeside are very supportive and always gave me valuable feedback on my music and helped me to get better and grow as an artist. The collective is releasing mainly chillhop/lofi beats but there are no strict boundaries.
The main focus of the collective is to help other producers in production and growth and to give them a place to share their music.
Anakin: This is one of my favorite tracks I have produced. It features a dark, grimy sample that was just a perfect fit for some bars of a dope vocal artist.
No wonder Yzl hit me up and wanted to rap over it, as he is a fan of this type of beats. Maybe we can see another collab with me and him in the future.
For the decision on the name, you need to ask Yzl about that one.
Liquid Motion: I can’t really remember the process of producing the track. (Maybe because I am a “fast producer” – most of my beats are “done” in about 2 hours max -).
All I can say is that it fits the whole vibe of Volume 2 and is a nice addition.
Essentials: Same like above. I think this beat is almost 3 years old, therefore I am listening to it with “new” ears. There are some things I would do differently today. But it’s a sweet little bump I like to hear every now and then.
Tumblr media
Tell us a little bit about Austria and your culture? What is it like to live in Vienna? Food and lifestyle and such? Finally, does the community and culture in Vienna reflect on your music?
This is a difficult question for me because I loathe national identification of any kind and form. Explaining the reasons for that would take too much time and misses the aim for this interview.
Nevertheless, I am grateful to live in a beautiful city with countless green and remote places. Food-wise, Vienna is not the best place to live in. (for me at least). I am a much bigger fan of eastern cuisine, which I also like to cook with my girlfriend at home.
In my mind I feel all music is influenced by the environment an artist lives in. Therefore yes, I think the culture and community do reflect on my music.
Thanks for that, So I wanted to spend a bit of time on another release of yours. "Belegte Beats" released last year. It is a musical escape in its self. Thank you for this 18 track project. There is so much variety present in this release and the drums drew me in on every track. The change-ups as the album played made this a genuine cope for versatile ears. "Unknown" had beautifully daunting vocals finished with this necessary pause that allowed "Free" to come through aged and chilling, something I love about the lofi tweaks you make in your music.
With restraint, you pieced together something that I feel shows the possibilities available to beat-smiths when they find their niche. Special mention to your tracks "Relieve" and "Good Night ". If you're looking for ideal study and laxing tracks check these two out.
On the topic of this project as a whole, what was it like to create? And over what timeframe were you working on it?
When KADV (kick a dope verse) hit me up with the opportunity to release my first physical tape I was so stocked. The process of producing the tracks took place in summer 2018 where I locked myself in and produced every day for about 2 to 3 weeks till I was satisfied with 18 tracks, which you can hear today.
BTW: The tape got re-pressed and is available for purchase again.
Can you breakdown what your favourite tracks from this release mean to you as their creator? What inspired their creation? And finally what it was like to put each track together?
As I already mentioned in the previous answer, the process of producing all 18 tracks took place in summer nearly two years ago. Therefore, I can’t really break down all the tracks. In the gap from back then to now, I would estimate that I produced nearly 200 beats or so.
Furthermore, there are many things I would change today, or things I could do better now. Nonetheless, I want to highlight my favorites from this release:
Free: Unfortunately, I forgot which sample I used for this beat. I really like the chops I have used and the brushes in the background which gives the track a nice atmosphere and emphasizes the drum rhythm.
Chip: I love how I treated the sample with the effects and the modulation of it. A really grimy/jazzy mixture I am more than proud of.
Back on the mvnitou singles bandwagon, I have to mention your track "Buzzy Nights" a collaboration that you created with Axian, a beat-smith that blends into creation some truly dreamy tracks just like yourself - link to Axian's Spotify below.
How did this creative collab come about? And what sound and expression were you going for with "Buzzy Nights"?
Axian messaged me and offered me to collab on a track, which filled me with ambition and joy.
I laid the melody down and sent it over to Axian, who added all the nice background sounds and a beautiful saxophone melody, This gave the track the theme of a buzzy night in a foreign country. All in all, this was one of the best collabs I have ever been part of. Shoutout to Axian
You also teamed up with Austria based taste blending curator and collective "Pueblo Vista". The track you put together for Pueblo Vista is "gift" created for the "Last Summer: Lo-Hop Essentials" compilation and its name speaks for its self. Its dreamy vocals and sweet night-time vibes are a present to all ears, thank you for your contribution to this compilation that features other musical talents such as Naif, Enkae and n o r m a l.
Magic was made with this Pueblo Vista release, nice work to all involved. What inspired the name gift? And how did you go about putting "gift" together? Finally, what did you think of Last Summer as a whole?
(Link to the Last Summer Compilation: https://open.spotify.com/album/1NeN0rEtlqF802p4EFLfe5)
Gift was the first track which got released on all digital platforms.
To this day I'm still releasing my music mostly only on Soundcloud.
This track was well-received on Spotify and I got really nice comments on this beat. This track is quite old, due to that it's hard for me to recall the titling of this track.
In last summer I was visiting Greece two times, where I found much inspiration and relaxation for myself. On top of that and having my laptop with me I was able to produce some beats there.
Tumblr media
On the subject of collaborations. What draws you in about a creative that makes you want to build an artistic relationship?
In the past what has been enjoyable for you during collabs and what have you found challenging about blending your works with other creatives?
I really love working with other people. What I really love and what drives me to build an artistic relationship is, when I am learning something new.
Everyone I have worked with has a different method and approach to producing music, which can be extremely inspiring.
That’s why I am always keen to work with other creative people because you can’t foretell what the end product going to be like.
You have also put together your first Drumkit Sample Pack - "MVNITOU DRUMKIT Vol.1" yet another way you've let loose and shared your creativity with the beat community, much love. Packed with snares and all, this was a release that I thought showed another side to your craft, appreciated.
What encouraged the idea to give a drum-kit a go? and what was it like to get a positive response? Can you explain what this project was like to put together?
Many drumkits you can buy on the internet are lacking quality. Especially when you are searching for dusty 90s style or Lofi Drums. My motivation for releasing a drumkit was to give aspiring beat producers a quality kit with sounds, which were made for instant use.
On top of that, I was really trying hard to screw on a effect-chain which you can easily load up on FL Studio that emulates the popular and often replicated SP404 “Lofi” – Effect.
What is next for mvnitou and do you have any upcoming releases, shows, or creative projects you would like to share?
In the upcoming weeks there are many releases from me. 4 singles will be available for streaming in May.
In June I can proudly announce that my second physical tape will get released with KADV. This one is more Boom Bap orientated, so keep an eye out for that.
Also last week my little ep “State Of No-Mind” with broken flavor got uploaded on Soundcloud.
The Ep is available on all streaming platforms on 16th May.
Thank you for that. Can you recommend creatives from any field that you feel people should check out?
There are many people I want you to check out, as they make great music and definitely inspire me.

Words with Ysociety
Tumblr media
(The following interview was relocated this year and is words shared with photogragher Yan Fresh in 2015, enjoy)
 Ysociety Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jetjaguar/
So it has been close to two years since I first viewed a shot by Y society, a low key photographer and talent out of LA whom counters culture with every shot he takes, capturing day to day living with rawness and taste.
This young man has got to be one of my favourite photographers, catching human emotion, and the hidden beauties of the streets with truth and artistic expression through his experiences and on point, point of view. This guy knows how to work the lens, so enjoy and take in the words of this up and coming photographer.
Tumblr media
Hey man how about we start of with the basics.
Favourite Food: Thai food - pad see ew
Favourite Beverage: Tea
Favourite Place To Chill: The crib or the little hidden parks in la.
First Album you purchased: I don’t remember my first one. I do remember the last cds I bought. the low end theory and midnight marauders by a tribe called quest. Memory of the first shot you took that mean't something to you: It didn’t mean to me as much at the time. it would probably be pictures of my grandparents.
Favourite Location: East Los
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Views on the current Ebola break out: It’s a pretty crazy situation, but i try not to get too into it. once it hits la I'll worry.
Views on mainstream media/coverage:Some stuff is over exaggerated and un-interesing. not enough goes into real current world issues like war, human rights, gender equality, etc.
Favourite time to shoot: Definitely night. I'm a night time person.
A track to bounce to: An album - Three 6 Mafia Underground Vol. 1
A track to chill to: bjork - venus as a boy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey man thanks for taking time to share words, so how long have you been taking shots and what got you into photographer?
I started shooting when I was sixteen. I started off with a point and shoot and eventually graduated to better gear once I started to get the hang of f stops, iso, focal lengths and film speeds. A lot of my inspiration came from magazines especially national geographic style mags.
What I love most about your shots is the way you kind of tell a story with each one, it’s like when I look at one of your photos I’m there if you get what I mean? haha It’s a compliment. How do you capture that emotion and what do you try to convey with each of your shots?
It depends on the situation. I don’t really have some type of outline for taking pictures. It's usually all in the moment. Nothings planned.
Tumblr media
Where are your favourite places to shot and why? I like shooting in the inner city because I spend a lot of times with friends around those areas and it’s always active. I also really like hitting train yards and east La. It feels like a Little Mexico cruising around.
Do you study anything at the moment that helps you with your photography or can we just admit you're a natural born artist?
I took a film photography class a few years ago. I hated it. Only cool thing about it was I got to process my own film in the schools lab.
That's the only reason I'd go back. I doubt I’d ever major in it in school.
Have you had anyone contact you in regards to featuring your art anywhere, and do you have any projects under way? I remember watching a clip you put together for your friends graffiti art way back?, the music you used was on point for that video, would love to see another piece like that again I have a few magazines and books contact me to feature pictures. I’m always open to stuff like that. I’m currently working on my second mag and hoping to have it out within the next two weeks and I've also been working on a short documentary that’s been put on hold for certain personal reasons, but I am releasing mini short movies here and there.
Tumblr media
Where would you like to see your art take you in the future and is there anything else you would love to pursue in the future? Hoping it lands me a stable job travelling . Living out of a suitcase for a few months would be pretty cool. I’m currently looking into the medical field so I hope I can pursue something in that too.
Tumblr media
Here at beatsfortheill we have a deep appreciation for art and culture, could you share a few forward thinkers/ artists that you recommend we check out? mikeysmth.tumblr.com - photographer from Australia ojaeblog.com - this guy is always travelling. another good photographer reyk.tumblr.com - this guy is from Bulgaria. everything from drugs, sex, graffiti and a whole bunch of other stuff. dude disappeared a while back though. Spoke to one of his friends last year and said hes fine and in Paris.
Tumblr media
Are you drawn to certain people/ stories when you take individuals photo or does it just sort of happen? It just happens. I don’t really sit around and talk to the person. every now and then it’ll break off with conversation. What sort of camera do you use for your shots? Your shots always tend to have this feel and look I haven’t seen before, like I said before you take shots that have that raw feel and convey truth. How do you make that happen? I’ve been shooting with a 5d mark ii for a good period of time. I also have a gang of point and shoots and film slrs. I recently upgraded but took a short break. I’m getting back into things and trying to change it up a bit this time around. Thanks for your time man, Any Last Words? shoutout to all my friends/fam and rest in peace to all the homies lost this year.

Words with [bsd.u]
Tumblr media
Bsd,u prefers to refer to himself as a beatmaker over producer which to some degree is true -but if I’m going to give my opinion I would say Matt provides musical arrangements that could easily nurse a rappers rhyme or a songwriters words effortlessly, as the melody he creates can have one singing.
Not only is the lad humble but he also holds together an intellect and understanding in regards to how the media plays a part in the sort of “controlled” personas human kind has become from the influence of some music to the mainstream news, which is why we at beats are always impressed by musicians such as Bsd.u.
From “late night bumps” to his collaboration with tkdwn with “within” Bsd.u seems to have an endless flow of on point beats that could leave anyone feeling calm and collective.
So relax and enjoy the words with the talented individual out of Canada known as Bsd.u, much love
Favourite food: Chinese
Favourite beverage: Water or something with alcohol in it
Favourite place to relax: I’m really not sure tbh. The island I live on is essentially a rainforest so it’s always pretty chill here anywhere you go.
Favourite destination/location: I haven’t done much travelling but from everywhere I’ve been, I think where I currently live is as close to perfect as it gets (for me, anyways)
Views on today’s media, news, coverage: It’s all fabricated and exaggerated for either the entertainment value or to scare the shit out of you. Politics and large corporations control the media and then the media controls you, it’s actually pretty genius. I like cartoons and shows with no point, like Seinfeld. I don’t really watch T.V. much though.
Recommend a few of your favourite s/c producers artists: There’s like over 100. If I follow them then I fully support them and think they’re doing a great job and listen to them regularly. I only follow just over 100 people, I’m kind of picky.
Favourite Anime: Cowboy Bebop without a doubt. There’s lots of anime that’s really good but that series is perfect. Everyone has seen it though.

Thanks man, so how long have you been producing for and what inspired you to start creating your own beats? Did you get into it alone or did you have a group of friends interested in creating too?
I’ve never really considered it producing. I think to actually be a music producer, there’s a lot more that goes into it than messing around on some DAW’s and an SP404. I just make beats. I started when I was 15 or 16, not seriously though. It was just for fun. I was listening to a lot of Madlib, J Dilla, MF Doom, Black Milk, Jonwayne and Samiyam at the time. Samiyam Rap Beats Vol. 1 was what made me want to get a 404 when I was 17 or 18. That’s when I kind of got into it a little bit more. Most of my friends from school were into metal and I didn’t really know what I was doing until I was 19. It’s always been an individual hobby. I’ve made beats with a few people within the past year but I prefer working alone just because it’s easier to think and you can take your time.
You’re based in BC Canada, can you share a little bit about your surroundings, what is the music scene like in your area and do you go out much? If so how do you feel today’s appreciation for diverse music has greatly effected our generation?
The music scene here is all EDM and most people aren’t there for the music. I don’t like nightclubs, they’re kind of shit here and so are the bars. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some really talented DJ’s here and lots of well known artists that are playing sets here but it’s not really my thing. I think the youth has always been attracted to the next big thing musically. It’s never that it’s actually something new though, Dubstep and Trap have been around since I was like 8 or 9 years old but nobody hopped on the bandwagon till everyone else did. It’s nice to see genre’s like that progressing but I think if you get into the newer stuff, you need to go back and listen to what that sound is based off of because you might actually like it a lot more. Then you can ask that one girl who LOVES Dubstep who Skream is and watch her say “you mean Skrillex?!” hahahaha.
I’ve always preferred simplicity and melody over technicality and a lot of people are bringing it back to that, so props to them.
Do you have a set way of creating your beats or do you just flow off the samples that just fit your mood? I love how you incorporate modern day hip hop like samples by the likes of Busta & Tyler the creator yet in compass this chill tone & feel that’s subtle and for any age group, let’s just say my folks don’t mind bouncing to your tunes, run us through it all and how you unravel it all?
I usually do the kick and snare first, then chop/loop a sample and then do the hats/percs/whatever over top. It depends I guess because I’ve made beats in so many different ways, it’s different every time. I don’t really like following a formula or else it makes the process seem monotonous. Thanks haha. There honestly isn’t much to it, just me playing with sounds.
When I’m working on a tape, like [late night bumps] for example, I try and take no longer than 2 weeks and follow somewhat of a basic formula to make it all fit nicely together. It’s all mixed and processed on the 404 and then touched up in a DAW.
Tumblr media
(Beat-tape Cover for Late Night Bumps 2)
In regards to collabs what process do you go through, are you close with those you collab with? How did you all discover one another?
I only collab with people I want to. It’s funny cause it’s almost always people with under 1000 followers and they’re really dope. I don’t really like being asked to collab, I’m always the person to contact them first. It’s just because I used to say yes to everyone and then I realised that I couldn’t be trying to make 5 tracks a day with 5 different people, I just ended up flaking out on a lot of people.
You’re only 21 and putting out a variety of beats that actually relieve mine and I’m sure many others headaches, thanks for that by the way, in regards to your age there seems to be an uprise of young producers creating at the moment, through there music within all genres, it’s a blessing really, what’s your views on this lets say 90s kids creatives and what do you think fuels it’s growth all over the world?‘
only 21’ hahaha there’s 17 year olds 10x more talented than me these days. I think 90s kids all have a nostalgic feel to their music for the most part. People making lo-fi hip-hop especially. I think the availability of cracked software and powerful technology becoming cheaper and cheaper makes it a lot easier to get into something like this.
Don’t start making music to try and fit into a genre and be cookie cutter as fuhk, do it to innovate and develop your own individual sound.
The thing I love most about your sound is the way you incorporate basically every genre the soul could ever be fuelled of, from jazz, to old classics, rnb & rap you’ve basically got it all covered. How did you develop this style, do you feel your family impacted your chosen sound at all? Or have you always been drawn to this mellow tone?
I just make what I feel like making. Some days I won’t make anything, some days I’ll make something with absolutely no genre just influences from various genres. For the most part, I’ll usually try and capture a somewhat similar sound just to try and have a certain sound as an artist. That’s the only stuff I really release, it’s the stuff that is different but somewhat similar or what I think my followers would appreciate.
Also, nobody in my family really listens to hip-hop specifically, so not at all really.
BPM doesn’t matter to me, as long as it’s mellow the drums can be as fast as they want. Burial is one of my favourite artists, as well as Skream. The only music I find myself listening to is jazz, hip-hop and early Dubstep. These 3 genre’s have like 500 sub-genres or more for each one though, I guess. LOL.
Tumblr media
(Album Cover for beat-tape - Late Night Bumps 1 - 4 by bsd.u)
What sort of messages do you try and bring across through your music if there are any? I feel you create an atmosphere that softens the heart and opens the mind with all the subtleties ie to some extend I feel your music paints picture, and always seems to build a sort of “ideal world” within my head, that’s a compliment mind you haha, so yeah what do you aim to create through your musical journeys?
I’m not really trying to get any messages across. I use music as an escape, when I just want to forget about day to day life and boring things. I get lost in putting together a piece of music.
I keep working on something until I zone out on it, and then it’s like yeahhhh this is dope. I think every artist I listen to is dope in their own way, I never compare two artists.
Through making music myself I’ve learned that you do it completely 100% for yourself and everyone else’s opinions whether negative or positive don’t really matter, as long as you like what you’ve made. The 'musical journey’ is simply self discovery and growth.
On an emotional level what sort of artists/producers got you into beat making and why were they such a big influence?
madlib, dilla, samiyam, dj premier, black milk, mf doom and jonwayne are my biggest influences, in no particular order.
Madlib got me into jazz, dilla got me into synths and swing, samiyam got me into lo-fi / the purchasing and discovery of an SP404.
In your spare time what do you enjoy doing away from the production side of things?
Eating food and playing video games and my girlfriend. :’)

(Beat tape Cover for Late Night Bumps 4 by bsd.u, artwork: theo snow)
In regards to tracks “late night bumps 2” really gets my spine-tingling, recently coming out of hospital I’ve found this beat tape really helps to refresh my mind, brilliant array of sounds and heart droppers I would say, much respect.
What was it like for you putting this tape together and what inspired its creation?
I copped a demo version of FL Studio for Mac and it didn’t have the ability to export tracks cause I wouldn’t pay for it. So I used an external sound card and recorded it all into the SP. I just chose some favourite cuts of the month, I just wanted to release something.
I personally think the first tape was a lot better but thank you! :)
Soundcloud has an endless supply of musical talents, for the past couple of years tuning into the soundscapes via s/c has been a sort of personal retreat for myself. How about yourself? Can you recommend some other musical talents like yourself that you would recommend we check out?
I’m discovering new artists everyday myself! SoundCloud is the only way I listen to music, my job allows me to listen to music so for 8 hours a day I’m listening to new music created by underground artists.
It’s really exciting to hear my sound in other peoples music as well and being regarded as an inspiration by them.
Everyone I follow is the cream of the crop.

Here at beatsfortheill we have mad respect for all forms of expression musically and beyond, are you also into art or spirituality? If so do you mind sharing a bit in regards to your taste in those areas?
Yeah definitely. I appreciate lots of things I don’t think most people would and I’m not sure how to describe what exactly makes me like something. I basically embrace everything completely different than what’s considered the norm. I’m not a hipster though, I just like weird shit because it’s like a shock when you see something completely different. Like, damn that shit is cool I’ve never seen anything like that before in my life.
It’s something new and usually can’t be imitated because it’s so unique. As far as spirituality goes, I’ve been interested in the concepts of various religions/philosophies but have never fully dedicated myself to walk a specific path.
Maybe when I’m older it’s something I’ll explore but some people straight up lose their minds over that kind of stuff.
Do you have a favourite track that you have put together so far? If so which one and why?
Nope ;)
To those out there wanting to give beat making a go like yourself what advice would you give them? and what helped you get started?
You’ll either love it or hate it but most likely both. Research your influences, practice everyday and whenever you aren’t making music you should be listening to it. Nothing really helped me get started. I just started messing around with a cracked version of FL Studio 8,
I didn’t watch tutorials or anything I just slowly found my way around the program after using it for 3 years. Now there’s millions of youtube videos and tutorials and stuff for practically every DAW. Whatever gear you get, programs you use, anything like that all comes down to personal preference.
There’s no right or wrong way, it all essentially does the same thing with minor differences. LEARN YOUR TOOLS BEFORE YOU BUY NEW SHIT <—– you can have $5k of equipment and not know how to use it or a $1k set up that you can work with fluently and efficiently. Work from the bottom up, don’t go buy everything you think you need and then try and make something, you won’t know what to do.
Tumblr media
(Album Cover for beat-tape Pook by bsd.u)
In regards to your family and friends are they all supportive of what you do?
I guess so. Most of them probably don’t even know that I make music though. I don’t really talk about it too often.
So in regards to your music, where would you like to go from here? To me you’re already a successful & humble creator but we all have our personal pursuits that drive further desires, what are those desires for yourself?
To make a living off just doing music would be the dream but it’d also be way too stressful not having a stable and consistent income. I really don’t know what I want other than personal goals, I don’t really want to talk about hahaha.
I already make ok money from BandCamp and have a nice job, I’m in a really good place right now financially for the first time in over a year and it feels nice.
Any places you’d like to travel and have your music heard at? Ie maybe Australia?, we would love to have you here in Perth just saying
Haven’t really thought about it. Honestly if I was to travel the world and go to nice places, my music would probably be the last thing on my mind! I’d probably be taking pictures instead hahaha :)
Any last words that you would love to share with? Positive vibes, thanks or recommendations?
Thanks for the interview, that was a lot of questions! If you read all of this, props to you and thank you for caring about me :) hahahaha
Random question,  if you had to live on an island with one person and have endless internet access but a force field covers the island meaning no one could visit you? Whom would ya pick and why?
Girl I love, cause who else would I want to be stuck with forever
