They started to walk toward the kitchen, it would be nice to get a hot beverage before going to sleep, it would help easy his mind a bit. “Are you going to retire any time soon?” he answered Alfred with a question, he knew it wasn’t the same thing. “Should I adopt another kid?” He joked with Alfred. “I’m here for them, Maia will have everything she needs and more, Dick is all grown up he has his family to take care now, Jason is Jason and I will be more present with Tim and Damian.” He took a deep breath. “Selina is happy, she doesn’t need Batman or Bruce in her life.”

Once the two men were in the kitchen Alfred got to work on making hot chocolate for them both. Just like he had when Bruce was young, or for the other masters when they were all young and living here. “Am I going to retire? Never, I made a vow to your parents to watch over you for the rest of your life, and I have extended that promise to Masters Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian. As well as to Madames Gordon and Stephanie, and soon to Little Madame Maia. I plan on keeping that promise.” Smirking, “Master Damian would get jealous, wait until he’s older.” Nodding. 

“Good, Damian needs a father, and I know me and Master Dick try our hardest, but it’s not the same, he longs for your attention.” Frowning. “Selina is happy, and she may not need you as a romantic partner, but I am sure she will still want the friendship of Bruce Wayne. Despite that, what about you? Madame Kyle has found love, surely you can. I don’t want you growing old and alone, I want you to be more then content, I want you to be happy, Master Bruce, and is being Batman happiness?” Shaking his head, “No. I don’t think so. Perhaps I shall sign you up for Tinder, or Grindr or whatever it is the youth are using today, Master Bruce.”

“Maybe you’re being told that repeatedly for a reason,” he suggested, trying his hardest not to sound like a jackass. At the list of ingredients, Jon didn’t expect to hear him say ‘chicken broth’. “I thought you said this was a vegan household. What secrets are you hiding, Alfred?”

“For no reasons that I don’t already know, Jon.” Shaking his head, when the other said that he thought this was a vegan household. “I said that when I eat with Master Damian I only make vegan meals, however when I eat with myself or Master Wayne, or Masters Tim and Jason, I very much will have other food ingredients, that Master Damian would disapprove of. This is my kitchen after all, I will make what I please.”

“Sorry, I hate repeating myself, but I feel like you need to hear that,” he replied, shrugging. “So how do you make this? I mean I’ve never heard of this before”

“Trust me, Jon. I hear it all the time. I’ve gotten old surrounded by people who like to remind me of how cool, and awesome I am. Though, like you I remind them I am simply a butler doing my job.” Waving a hand, “It’s just a series of potato, leeks, and onions. Olive oil, chicken broth, things like that are also thrown in.” Checking his watch, he opened the refrigerator and pulled the pot out, placing it on a counter. Opening a cabinet he produced two bowls, before serving them both, smiling. “Enjoy.”

You and Tim

Master Tim and I share a very happy relationship, I care for him like a grandson, the same as all his siblings. Though I do wish Master Tim would get more sleep and drink less coffee, that habit of his can’t be healthy in the slightest.

“I will.” He answered agreeing with Alfred’s conditions. “In a perfect world Batman wouldn’t be needed here or in Gotham. I do hope all the other heroes can handle things without me, but if they don’t you know I can just stand still.”

“Good. You better Master Bruce, or I will be quite cross with you.” Nodding his head, “Yes, yes, but now world is perfect, and despite that I still think it’s time for Batman to retire, sir. There are more heroes out there then ever, and forgive me sir, but you are getting old. I think it’s time you sat still, and found new pursuits. A family perhaps?”

“Well that is something I’ve never heard of before in my life,” he admitted, “I can’t wait to try it, though” he reassured him with a beaming smile. “Still, you’re pretty cool, Alfred”

“Not surprising, I doubt many people serve as many extensive meals as my own, Jon. In this universe or others.” Smiling at him. “Good because it’s almost finished.” Chuckling, “As you’ve said several times, that I am pretty cool, Jon.”

“Lunch would be great, thanks,” he smiled, sitting back in his seat as he watched him. “You do, but there’s nothing wrong with taking pride in whooping ass. Honestly it’s quite fun when you do it because you seem so timid and neutral”

“Splendid, for lunch I’m making Sopa de Poro y Papa, which is a potato and leek soup. It is served chilled though, despite being a soup. Though in the colder months can also be served hot.” Smiling at the boy, “I am afraid, I don’t whoop arse, and I don’t think I’m timid or neutral. I think people just underestimate me because I’m old.”

“Jon. Just Jon,” he corrected with a chuckle. “You’re more then that and I think you know that. Give yourself some credit there”

“Well Just Jon, how about lunch?” Smiling at the young man, “Oh no, I am afraid that I am just a butler, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with being just a butler, Jon. I take immense pleasure and joy in it, and in my work that I do for the family.”

“If it means I will get some hot cocoa as well before going to bed, yes.” He joked with Alfred before giving a last look at the computer and taking a deep breath. “You’re right.” The wedding would had been a nice moment to attack, but it went smooth, he was probably worring too much for no reason. “Fine.” He said turning the computer off.

“Very well, Master Bruce if hot chocolate is what you want, then so be it. But you will only get any if you go to bed right afterwards.” Nodding his head at Bruce, “I bloody well knew I was right,Master Bruce.” Watching as he turned the computer off, Alfred smiled at him. “Very good, Master Bruce. Perhaps in this new city, you start a new life sir. Leave Batman in Gotham, make a home here in New York, for Bruce Wayne.”

“Alright, alright, seaworld is basically hell on earth, god it,” he breathed, hands raised as he raised a brow. “Wow, I need to watch more television, never thought I’d be saying that before. And also, language is definitely deserved here, Alfred. You’re amazing”

“Pretty much so for the fish, Jonathan.” Chuckling. “A little bit of television before bed never hurts, in fact I find that it helps improve the dreaming process.” Shaking his head, “You may call me amazing, but I am simply an old man doing my job.”

“I have many wonderful grandchildren, and I love them all. They all of their strengths and their weaknesses and no matter what I will support, and cherish them. I just wish they were happy, and that I could help them be happy.”

“I don’t know, Disney World doesn’t seem to trap Mickey in a cage, like Seaworld does to Shamoo. Nor do the dolls at Small World drag the park goers off the ride into the water.” Frowning, “Blackfish was a wonderful documentary, not quite for children though.” Chuckling though at the joke, “Language, Jon. Though when I want, I can kick arse, and take names.”

“He hates Seaworld?” he asked, always wanting to go there some time soon but realizing that’d probably be a trip he’d now take alone. At the butler’s apologies, Jon smiled and shook his head. “Don’t, I’m fine, it’s all in the past,” he nodded, “I’ll be fine, Arthur, I promise. Plus, you didn’t die,” he chuckled. “You’re a tough man, Alfred, you managed to keep yourself safe during this”

“He does, very much so. Master Damian said something about Wayne Enterprises buying it one day simply to shut it down. Along with several zoos.” When Jon smiled, Alfred gave him a nod. ““Well technically future, as everyone was older in your universe.” Chuckling, “Of course, when the apocalypse comes, I may very well be the bloody person who has to clean up after it.”

“Yeah, never really knew the details of how that happened,” he chuckled weakly, playing with his food a bit more. At the mention of his death, Jon froze, the color draining from his face and the look of fear now visible on his face. “I… uh…” he began to say, his throat drying up, “I-I’d rather not talk about it,” he whispered, looking down at his plate

“It was a documentary on dairy farms, just like a documentary ruined the trip we had to Seaworld planned. Keep Master Damian away from documentaries, he remembers everything in them.” Seeing the boy freeze up, and get spooked, Alfred realized how traumatic it must have been for the boy. “Nevermind it then, Jon. I apologize for asking, that was an inappropriate thing to do.”
