Part Two: Performances. CIRCUS BELLA (https://www.circusbella.org), the fabulous San Francisco-based troupe, recently completed a three-week stay over the holidays right in the middle of downtown San Francisco (East Cut). In a tent! Clowns, acrobats, juggling, aerialists, live music, the whole deal. These are performance photos - behind-the-scenes images were in the previous post.
A self-assignment, I documented the entire process starting weeks before opening night, from raising the tent, through rehearsals and multiple performances, opening to closing night, plus extensive behind-the-scenes documentation. They let me backstage, a privilege I did not take for granted - that's a private space for any performer. Even though I knew some of the people already and had been around performances before, I was struck - flabbergasted, even - by every single person's intense camaraderie and collaboration while building the tent - a monumental process - and after that, developing and perfecting the show. Everyone pitched in, including performers who helped raise the tent and swept up between shows. Circus culture is an amazingly supportive one, a lesson for us all - me, anyway.
1 - Dwoira Galilea 2 - Ori Quesada 3 - Jefferson Freire and Abigail Munn 4 - Clowns: Jamie Coventry, Calvin Kai Ku, Natasha Kaluza 5 - Natasha Kaluza flying and the Band 6 - Julie Marshall and Kirk Marsh 7 - Toni Cannon 8 - Veronica Blair 9 - Abigail Munn and the Clowns: Kalvin Kai Ku, Jamie Coventry, and Natasha Kaluza 10 - Company closing the show.

Innovative and super-aethestically-pleasing interior remodel in the East Bay by architect Sky Lanigan, @skylaniganstudios. This was a really fun project to shoot: textures and colors and broad design strokes - and a practical space for living.

Went to the great state of Oregon over the holidays and took a day to wander around Mount Hood with a couple of in-laws (@kathy.kerridge, @paulstrailmix). It was so dam pretty I only occasionally noticed I was freezing my ass off. The secret is to keep moving, unless of course there is something to make a picture out of.
The big mountain in all but one of the photos is Mount Hood seen from Trillium Lake and one from Odell to the North. There is a trail around the Lake, where the forest photos were made. The last photo is Mount Jefferson; over to the left of it are the Three Sisters. All these are part of the Cascade Range, which goes from Northern California to British Columbia.

In the last month I completed another landscape architecture assignment for Fletcher Studio, @fletcher_studio, this time in Vallejo: Blue Oak Landing, an innovative housing project consisting of 75 pre-built modules - though you would never know by how it looks - it's just two great-looking buildings. The brief included documenting the hardscape and landscape, including the sculptural elements in the garden area. The modules were built by Factory_OS, #factoryos, right there on Mare Island. Contractor: Roberts Obayashi, @roberts_obayashi. Architecture by DBA, @davidbakerarchitects.

I recently completed a landscape architecture assignment for Fletcher Studio, @fletcher_studio, in South San Francisco. The brief included not just the landscape architecture, hardscape and plantings, but the main building populated by what appear to be random people who nonetheless completely resemble studio members, who were so easy and amenable at being ordered around to look like they just happened to be there, as one strives for in these situations. Thanks to all involved!

B. BLACK & SONS
Last week I accompanied my wife, Maggie Morgan (@maggiemorgan922), a costume designer, into the fabulous B. Black & Sons - specializing in wool and suit fabrics - in downtown Los Angeles. She is designing a suit for an actress in an upcoming adaptation of "1984" at the Aurora in Berkeley.
I asked for, and immediately got, permission to photograph the place, and these pics are the result from our brief visit. The last slide shows the swatch samples she will be working from. Many fine costumes for movies, television, and theatre - not to mention people's actual, real-life clothes (hello, Michelle Obama!) - have been built out of the fabrics from this place, which opened in 1922.

SONOMA HOUSE. A few from a recent project, a place with views, inside and out. Plus: a bonus image that absolutely no one asked me to take, an old shed, a wee bit overgrown, romantic-looking, and that's enough for me.

HIPPO HARDWARE IN PORTLAND, OREGON. 30,00 SQ. FT. OF STUFF.
I'm sensitized and attracted to places like this for a few reasons. As an ex-contractor, it's a toy-store-cum-museum for those with practical needs: period products for any building, but most particularly old buildings; even more specifically, old houses. Some of this stuff is beautiful simply because it represents an ornamental aesthetic that was common once upon a time but is rarely produced for new buildings. We just finished rebuilding our house in Northern California, and if we lived in Portland instead of here, I would have been a regular visitor with a tab.
On the other hand, as a photographer, I'm drawn to busy, complicated environments that are not always designed with aesthetics in mind; they just are what they are. To that end I have documented people's houses, prop and costume shops, construction job-sites, and back-of-the-house of professional restaurant kitchens. Making sense of busy spaces is a special challenge, obsession, and love of mine; how to use my current trade to make sense of them, first for myself, and next for the viewer of my own product: photographs.
Hippo Hardware (@hippohardware) presses all those buttons. As it says on their Insta page "Eclectic wonderland of hardware, lighting, architecture & plumbing from 1860-1960." No lie. When my wife and I were in Portland last November for Thanksgiving with family, we were told about the place as a possible source for period door and drawer handles for our new kitchen. As it turned out, they were right - within the first 20 minutes we found what we were looking for and bought them on the spot. I scouted each of the three floors and asked for permission to return with a camera and was granted permission. Here's a few samples from just a few hours of wandering around. Thanks to Steve, Jennifer, Amy, and Jackson.

M.F.K. FISHER - LAST HOUSE
I was recently given the chance to photograph the house of one of my literary heroes: M.F.K. Fisher; who wrote 34 books, a screenplay, the standard translation of Brillat-Savrin's "The Physiology of Taste", a children's book, and countless essays and articles, including for The New Yorker.
She is sometimes thought of only as a food writer, but that would be a mistake. It would be more accurate, as Dawn Druzal wrote for the New York Times in 2004, to say she was "a combination of Colette and Julia Child".
My introduction to her work was "An Alphabet for Gourmets", a kind of memoir, which through its elegant prose helped me survive the last stages of a failing romance. Reading a chapter or two every night left me with a sense of the sublime, and therefore, whatever happened, I would probably be OK; hope.
From the New York Times obituary: "In 1963, W. H. Auden called her "America's greatest writer." In a review of "As They Were," (Alfred A. Knopf, 1982) for The New York Times Book Review, Raymond Sokolov wrote, "In a properly run culture, Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher would be recognized as one of the great writers this country has produced in this century."
"Last House", as she called it, was designed and paid for by Fisher and built by her friend, architect David Pleydell-Bouverie, on his ranch in Glen Ellen. Finished in 1972, she lived there the last twenty years of her life. Bouverie gifted the ranch to the Audubon Canyon Ranch which uses the house for a variety of things, including tours and a yearly writing contest for young people - only right and highly appropriate.
Thanks so much to the staff of ACR, and especially Susie Allen.

A few weeks ago I had the honor and privilege to photograph the fantastic Los Cenzontles (@loscenzontles) during a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) event, performing with lots of the young - and not-so-young - musicians and dancers that are trained by and remain part of their community in San Pablo in the East Bay. This was hometown stuff, right in the community center itself, with an enthusiastic local crowd.
Los Cenzontles have put out over 30 albums in over 30 years, performing and writing with traditional and contemporary Mexican musicians and artists off all kinds, plus a few others such as Flaco Jimenez (who plays the accordion like Jimi played the guitar), Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, David Hidalgo, and… I could go on, but there's a character limit here. Most importantly, the music - and dance - is fantastic. Don't take my word for it, check out their YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@LosCenzontles and their website: https://www.loscenzontles.com.
They are having a fundraiser, so think about supporting them and all they do. They are the real deal.
