The one & only drawback to owning frogs
And it's a heartbreaking one.
Frogs die, quickly and without warning. One day your frog is happy and healthy, the next day something is not quite right, but before you can even get to the vet frog passes away. It's frustrating, angering, sad and leaves you feeling helpless. By the time you knew something was wrong it was already too late. Or, and I find this one worse, you wake up one morning and go to check on your frog, and he's dead. Not a single sign anything was wrong, happy, active, eating, pooping, absolutely no reason.
Every time I lose a frog I think, why am I doing this to myself, do I even want to keep frogs? It's such a terrible feeling knowing these beautiful little souls that you love so much can just up and die for seemingly no reason. I hate it, but I love them so much more. I don't want to give them up, I am willing to deal with the uncertainty and sadness in order to have them in my life.
I've only been keeping frogs for 3 years. over 20 frogs and I've lost 6. I just lost one today. I know it's not going to get easier (the sadness of the losses), but frogs are such special little guys, and they bring so much joy into my life.
How could you not love 10 frogs in a sleigh!

Let's talk about handling your pet frog
Tolerance of handling is one of those things about which many frog keepers have differing opinions. Some people are adamant that you should rarely handle your frogs and, if you must do so, wear gloves. That is likely true for certain species, but others can be regularly handled without gloves, as long as you have washed your hands thoroughly.
The key is understanding the needs of each frog species you are keeping.
I have a mahogany frog (forest floor dweller, looks like a cross between a leopard frog and a Mantella). He hides alot and he's small, so I do not handle him unless absolutely necessary. And I don't use gloves.
My White's tree frogs are a different story. Their skin produces a coating which minimises water loss and provides antibacterial and antiviral properties. This, combined with the fact that they seem to genuinely enjoy the company of humans (some more than others), is what makes them excellent pets.
As long as you have freshly washed hands, go nuts, hold your frog, and let them hang out with you if they want to.
My boy Jupiter wants to come out every night and he'll stay out for hours. He loves it.
My big fat jerk Mushi does not want you to touch him or even look in his general direction. He's not scared, just a jerk.
Frog keepers need to start educating themselves on the needs of each species they keep. A lot of misinformed opinions are floating around and I'm sure it's very confusing to new frog keepers.
I want all White's tree frog keepers to know that they can hold their frogs without fear. Simply have freshly washed hands and keep an eye on your frogs comfort level. The more you handle them, the more comfortable they become.

I have just discovered that my beautiful little girl Mooncake is a little bit disabled.
It wasn't very obvious when she was little, but her front feet are a bit malformed and she is not able to climb vertical surfaces. Amazon Milk frogs are incredible acrobats, she falls off things a lot.
She's totally healthy otherwise. She already eats from a dish so food is not a problem. I will rearrange her enclosure so she has more vertical surfaces to sit on.
It doesn't matter, she's still perfect to me 🖤🩶🤍
