It’s because he’s a rich, controlling business owner with a rare soft/vulnerable side whose doing terrible things for a “good” reason.

Him doing it for his family makes him more of a woobie (even though he’s totally doing it for himself. Let’s not kid ourselves.) And Nathalie being the love smitten assistant who is also ultimately controlled by him gives his fans an avatar.

Basically, I think we as a society are still recovering from Christian Grey.

Also- contrary to many an incel’s logic- women often don’t need a guy to be attractive in media to fangirl over him. Frollo from Hunchback and that clown from the new IT had a fangirl boom. And don’t get me started on how girls LOVE the Beast from beauty and the beast and actually hate his human form lol
