Recently I got into ROTTMNT. After seeing this compilation of Donnie on YouTube, I decided to watch the show on Netflix. I loved the video and I was amazed at the representation. Most shows go all or nothing with autistic characters, they're not allowed to just be. Currently I'm still on S1 and I think Donnie's just fine. Raphael is my favorite, though. I relate to him much more than any of the characters. The way he is acknowledged as the lovable, but pitied brother of the group, it is something I connect to very much among my friends. He gets frustrated easily, but he is gentle on the outside and always tries his hardest to fix his mistakes. This whole idea for him, how he always gets so close to being the best (or just his best, as low of a bar as it may be) but he can't quite get there. His brothers usually hardly have the heart to tease him, and you can see the gears turn in his head as he tries to tell himself he's good enough. I want to see if he ever breaks. My ultimate point here is this, though: Every autistic person is different. While Donatello may be relatable to a lot of autistic individuals due to his analytical personality or his hyperfixatious [is that a word?] nature, I personally find it really easy to see myself in Raph and not so much Donnie or any of the others, despite being autistic. Don't expect one specific trait, interest or identity from us. We are not here for show, or to wow you. We're not something cool to observe in the wild. We're autistic. Let us be :)
