Running Devotionals: Training on God's Word as Coaching for Life's Runs by Arthur W. Coffey Jr.

Synopsis: In this training, I will ask you to consider a hierarchy of God's Word over the human spirit, over the mind, and over the body. My spirit is that part of my being that can perceive God "talking" to me through his Word about specific conditions in my life.

When John the Baptist, still in his mother's womb, sensed the presence of Jesus, who was still in Mary's womb, he "leaped" inside his mother's womb (see Luke 1:41). He had connected with the "Word made flesh" (John 1:14). "The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart" (Prov. 20:27). My prayer is that the reader will move closer to and relate with God's heart on a deeper level as you move closer to and relate more deeply with His Word (see: John 1:1). "For physical training is of some value--useful for a little; but godliness(spiritual training) is useful and of value in everything and in every way, for it holds promise for the present life and also for the life which is to come" (1 Tim.4:7-8 The Amplified Bible, or AMP.

Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus from the tomb on the third day after his crucifixion. Easter is the fulfilled prophecy of the Messiah who would be persecuted, die for our sins, and rise on the third day. (Isaiah 53). Remembering the resurrection of Jesus is a way to renew daily hope that we have victory over sin. According to the New Testament, Easter is three days after the death of Jesus on the cross.

Running for Recovery: Marathons of the Body, Mind, Spirit by Arthur Coffey

Synopsis: In a physical marathon, the "wall" shows up about mile twenty or twenty-one; when this happens, mind and body shake hands to say "we quit." That's where most runners will shut down, unless they reach down into their identity as spirit. To the question "Who am I; what is my identity?" God's answer is "I am spirit; I have a mind; and I live in a body." So, to break through the "wall" requires a hierarchy of spirit over mind over body. God's Word will address our spirit when mind and body are out of it, thereby setting Word over spirit over mind over body to keep the feet moving. Project this to other marathons: mental, spiritual, emotional, interpersonal, occupational, financial, etc.

Bottom line: Can the reader finish the book, put it down, and say: "Wow, look what God's Word performed; I want to be in the Word; I want the Word to be in me"? The closer the reader comes to God's Word, the closer they come to Him (John 1:14). The Word will have become "sent out (Isaiah 55:10-11), active and alive (Hebrews 4:12), watched over and performed" (Jeremiah 1:12) in their lives!

Freedom of religion is, now, replaced with freedom from religion: e.g., the Ten Commandments were removed from schools, partly, with the rationale that repeated, daily attention, given to them would cause students to begin doing them. Further, while the Bible is being ousted, schools are now told to study the Quran. Prayer is not to be conducted at the White House; but, the Day of Prayer for Muslims is to be acknowledged. Is there something wrong with this picture?

God’s Word addresses all of time. The Greek words denoting the difference in God’s time and our time: chronos refers to our chronological watch/calendar time; kairos refers to God’s meaningful, filled-up, immeasurable, unending time. God can move his kairos directly into our chronos. I have come to believe that when I place the name of Jesus over any person or circumstance, the merging of times has begun.
