BROWNLOW: Chief Superintendent Brownlow. The new one. Or rather the, uh, old one returned.

Guess who’s back, back again. Brownlow’s back, tell a friend.

A nice episode that gives Derek something of a happy ending to losing his acting-super position. It shows that he really is too good a cop to be wasted on politics and that he’s genuinely appreciated by his colleagues… contrasted with Charles, who is always a step removed from anyone under the rank of chief inspector.

CRYER: They found her. In the river.

Cathy dies, Nick feels guilty for not being there, Dave blames Reg for having a dodgy belly and stopping off at the chemist, and Rod spends most of the double-length episode sleeping.

I don’t know why they decided to have another death so soon after Jo’s, and while having it happen off-screen gives it a quiet realism, it also seems unfair on Cathy to do it that way, especially as she's basically forgotten by the next episode.

(Also, I really wish TB would not be so big a fan of pitch dark episodes and yellow-tinted lighting in yellow rooms.)

LOXTON: There’s more to driving than speed.

Norika gets the unwanted attention of a real creeper and Steve is stupid enough to accept an area car race challenge from a Stafford Row PC. Andrew gets wind of it and is a bit OOC with his willingness to ignore the gossip—although if he were going to do so for anyone, it’d be for Steve, whom he’s endlessly determined to see the good side of.

John continues as he began: assaulting suspects, blackmailing witnesses and playing innocent when Andrew questions his tactics. Andrew, of course, sees right through him, but this time John gets the win.

Sun Hill plays a friendly against the Canley youths and it goes about as well as you’d expect, with Steve getting red carded off and Reg not exactly being a great talent in goal. Andrew getting way too involved on the sidelines is a nice touch. Damn shame that it was almost impossible to get any decent caps with crappy video quality + constant movement.
