I think part of why I'm so haunted by Jack / Ianto can be boiled down to Ianto's lines in Cyberwoman.
"Haven't you ever loved anyone" he brokenly asks jack, a plea for mercy. Jack will go on to love Ianto so fiercely it almost breaks him.
"One day I'll have the chance to save you and I'll watch you suffer and die" Ianto proceeds to be the only character to consistently offer jack comfort after a death and not just brush it off, shows pain at jack's suffering and rescues him multiple times.
Like, there's enemies to lovers, and then there is Jack/Ianto.

My favourite part is where Gareth talks about how well they all got along on set and how surprised James Marsters was about it, because it's really not always like that. Gareth also talked about how glad he was to have someone like John there who kept everyone's spirit up during the sometimes very long days on set. <3 Love them!

Before joining Torchwood Three, Ianto only knew of Captain Jack Harkness through word of mouth. None of it was particularly complimentary. He would never get into Cardiff as Ianto Jones, Personal Assistant, and so he showed the Captain three faces.
Firstly, he was the sort of man the Captain wanted, if you listened to the gossip. Young, attractive. The sort of guy who hangs around dark parks in tight jeans. He would save your life and then bite your lip. Jack is too old to fall for a pretty face.
Secondly, he was the sort of man Jack needed, if you listened to the bitching. Lost, alone, looking for a hero. He's been through hard times and needs purpose. Needs a dashing man whose feet he could kiss. Jack is too old to fall for a sob story.
Thirdly, with nothing else left, he lets the mask slip. He was the type of man Jack understood. Smart, determined, quick on his feet. He could come up with a way to save the creature and put his body on the line to see it through.
Jack will always fall for a clever man in a suit.

Jack, in 'Broken' implying that he knows Ianto only wears the suits because Jack is into them. And Ianto agrees.
Except... 'Blind Summit'' suggests that Ianto was indoctrinated and retconned repeatedly, and didn't understand where his fondness of suits came from. Tortured to the point he didn't understand why he was so good at making coffee. Because Torchwood One were molding him. Into the perfect, loyal, obedient operative.
And that just kills me.
We never knew the real Ianto. And neither did he.

Ianto in 'Missing Molly' saying that Jack "ended things" with Ianto's girlfriend is so interesting to me. Because obviously this audio takes place after 'Broken', and after the start of their affair. But I also want to place it before 'The Last Beacon', where Ianto refers to Jack as his boyfriend, because Ianto still blames Jack for murdering Lisa in this one line.
.....And then continues sleeping with him, and eventually starts catching feelings. What a guy.
