Rocksteady in Season 1 is so much fun to sketch. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; Season 1 is the best TMNT season by far. The tone, music and animation are so much stronger than at any point in the rest of the series. The rest of the series would’ve been so much better had it followed the tone that Season 1 set.

Part 2/2 of my Season 1 Rocksteady binge. I had a lot of fun with these.

While doing “Blast for the Past”, I went on a little Season 1 binge and sketched a lot of my favorite Rocksteady moments. (½)

#TurtleQuest: “Blast from the Past” is a knockout episode with two key strengths: 1. It’s an episode about Splinter 2. It’s a Season 1 flashback episode! I was so thrilled at the chance to go back and sketch Season 1, though, that most of my focus went to that. Any other time, I would’ve been thrilled with the Splinter-centric main story, but with the flashback scenes (’cause Splinter loses his memory), it just hit me how good the series was in its infancy, and how different it could’ve been had they stuck to the tone that the first season had. In fact, I enjoyed myself so much that there will be a separate post for all the cross-Season 1 stuff I drew.

#TurtleQuest “This is April O’Neil, uh, being signed off.” The 3-part Season 3 finale kicks off with “The Big Rip Off” - the most appropriate name for an episode yet. Seriously, how can such an important episode be so mediocre? The animation alone is unacceptably poor, and yet, the underlying plot is SO good. For once, our villains WIN, and the consequences of that victory will build over the next two episodes. But do the heroes feel the gravity of their failure at the end of the episode? Of course not. Instead, they ring out the episode with a lame pun, as if it didn’t even matter. (sigh) This episode deserved to be so much better than it is. Let’s hope the other two will step it up.

#TurtleQuest “Bye, Bye, Fly” Finally, another episode worth talking about. “Bye, Bye, Fly” is a solid episode, full of humor and great moments from most of our main cast. Rocksteady and Bebop in particular really get to shine.

Rocksteady: “Me and Bebop made plans!” Yep, they were going on a date. 🦏❤️🐗

#TurtleQuest “Shredderville” was... an episode, I guess. I was ready to write it off completely, and then Splinter had to go and be adorable right at the very end. So there you go, that was the only interesting thing about this whole episode.

Rocksteady & Bebop being gay is literally the only bearable thing about "Mister Ogg Goes to Town". Good lord, how do episodes like this even happen? Why are all David Wise episodes APART from Season 1 hot garbage? This episode represents the series at its absolute worst, when it had no idea what to do with its own world or lore and just scraped the bottom of the barrel. Fortunately, Season 3 will pick up some steam towards its climax. #TurtleQuest
