she poked the side of his face with the back end of her brush. “don’t sass me, next time that will be your eye.” she grinned at him. athena kept the powder down and picked up a light brown eye shadow. “i know i said nothing more, but you have empty spaces in your eyebrows and they’re annoying me.” she began filling them in meticulously. at his comment, she quirked an eyebrow up. “well, i’m glad i can help. i’d treat all of you differently, but with the amount of times i’ve had to cover a pimple or eye bags, it’s hard to think of y’all as anything other than normal.”

Worst mistake someone could make with their makeup?

“making a neopolitan ice cream on their face. y’know, when the blush, bronzer, and highlight are so strong and not blended that they just look like chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla smears on your face. like, no. you're supposed to look delicious enough to fuck, not eat. worst mistake ever."

who do you want to spend more time with?

“myself. seriously, being a makeup artist means always working on someone else and being at a shoot or a set and it’s exhausting. i can’t remember the last time i was truly alone.”

What wouldn't you want your parents to know you've done?

“i’ve threatened a fucking princess out of spite. they’d be scandalised if i told them, or they found out. really, though, it was all harmless.”

What's do you like most about being a makeup artist?

“it’s so artistic. really, makeup can do so much for someone’s face. it’s never about hiding their features, its always about enhancements and i think that’s the most fascinating part because every person has different features that can be enhanced.”

“oh, fuck. um, william gomfrey, calix (it really kills me to say this), and kaleb. but that’s just the guys. for girls, i’d say nea, vanessa, and catherine.”

"definitely that fact that she’s a walking trash bag. but she's also so so so incredibly loyal. and our tempers totally match, so that's always a plus, to be honest."

“coffee is sacred !! and not having it in the morning is just wrong.” theo pouted, his lower lip jutting out as his arms folded over his chest. and then— “wait, what ?? what are you talking about ??” his eyes widened, and he had to suppress his immediate urge to flinch. “makeup seems like it should be able to do quite a lot. i’ve seen the youtube videos, ‘thena. what would they do in plastic surgery, anyway ? my jawline can’t get any sharper, unless i want the ability to cut steel.”

“coffee is unholy. it is the devil’s work. it is everything wrong with the world. now tea-- tea is truly sacred.” she chuckled at his expression and flipped her brush so that the plastic end was pointing at him. “but that nose. you could totally do with some cheek fillers, your cheekbones are extremely dull. i can contour them, but usually guys have a problem with that.”

“if you think having a normal life is pathetic, then i really do feel sorry for you. have a nice day.” fed up with grace’s presence, athena grabbed her kit and walked out of the room.

“no, you’re the only one who doesn’t trust me, mainly because i see right through you.·someone has to call you out, servants are too afraid of losing their job.” athena packed up her kit and cleared the table.·“just leave it on the floor, i’m sure someone who really needs it·will pick it up.”·

“athena, you’re so lucky to even be standing here.” grace didn’t even listen to the girl in front of her, just let the words spill out of her mouth and watched the way her foundation creased as she lifted her lips up. “i’m really not interested in self help from a girl who can’t be trusted to feed anyone.” she smirked, pulling away to brush her hair away from her face and collect her phone.

“not lucky. it’s just that everyone else likes me, dare i say maybe even more than you.” she smiled innocently at grace and moved away, turning to pack up her brushes. “i wish that were a problem, but unfortunately for you, i’m not a servant.” she handed the money back to her. “i don’t need this. i don’t charge for charity.”

athena laughed heartily at the woman’s comments. “with all due respect to them, i don’t think they’d be able to comprehend most of the books as they stand. you know something’s wrong when they consider haiti and yemen to be the most evil places in the world.”

“ damn, alright. ” feeling slightly taken aback, she nibbled at her lips and mumbled before taking the bottle, opening it and taking a sip before putting it down and bracing herself to the female and shrugging. “ mhm. whatever works, b. ” she crossed her legs and lifted her head up for athena to get started, eyes pinned at the phone in her hands as she clicked away before asking. “ so, who else do you have to fix up today ? ” she bitterly snorted. “ aside from princess grace, i’m sure. ” 

“good. now stay still.” athena grabbed a contour palette and began work on vanessa’s cheekbones, trying to make them look sharper than they already were. she dusted the contour shades under her natural bone structure to bring the definition she previously mentioned was missing. “um, i’m not sure, honestly. at this point i’m so used to everything being so last minute that i just wait for a phone call or a text and go wherever i’m needed.” she rolled her eyes at the mention of grace. “fuck, nessa, can’t you get me out of that? or find someone willing to put up with her? she’s driving me nuts. i think the recent speculations have finally gotten to her.”

“i definitely didn’t have five. one, i think.” for a moment, xander hummed in thought before adding, “two, maybe. but two at the most.” as best as he could—while trying not to lose an eye—he squinted at her. “are you saying that i can’t become pretty, ‘ena ?? even with your skills ?? good lord, you wound me !!” theatrically, he clutched his chest.

“even one’s too many, xan. it’s breakfast. you just defiled breakfast with coffee.” athena paused for a second, deciding that she was entitled to mess with him a little. she remarked offhandedly, “the coffee probably explains the discolouration in your teeth.” she chuckled slightly at his pathetic squint and patted some concealer under his eyes with a brush. “well, i’m obviously brilliant at what i do, but makeup can only fix so much. i say you should look at plastic surgery.”

“i’ve been to haiti, yemen. i’ve been as close to the evils of this world.” grace pointed out, tilting her head gently. “i am an ambassador against evil. but you… you think i personify everything wrong with this little world of powers and lipsticks. i’m not even close, athena. and i won’t have you think that. i won’t have you tell the world how hard your life is, because i don’t kiss the ground you walk upon. you don’t deserve that.”

athena laughed in grace’s face. the girl was truly so ignorant, so sheltered that she thought that her evils were evil enough. “do you not realise that you’re royalty? you are guaranteed security wherever you go - you haven’t seen anything. you are no ambassador.” her temper was rising with every word, and it took everything in her power to not raise her voice. her voice was steady and full of conviction. “you are not even close to everything wrong with the world. you’re just part of the ignorant ones who think the entire world revolves around them. i don’t want you to kiss the ground i walk upon, you should have to do that for anybody, but for the sake of the people who do so for you, the least you could do is accept that because of your stature, you know nothing of the true evils of the world. maybe then people will respect you for more than philanthropy and beauty - they’ll know you have a real personality, and self-awareness, and those two will help you more than anything else.”
