Ok one more because I’m SO curious now.

Mine was YouTube, back in around 2012. But I only used it to subscribe to like 3 people. Then it was Instagram in 2014.

Ok I’m curious again so another poll. Rb for larger sample size.

Mine was the iPod touch 5, technically I did have a DS but it was the DS lite with no internet

I got my first device (that wasn’t the family computer we could only use for schoolwork and games) at 11. It was an iPod touch. My dad was smart and only allowed me to have private accounts that only friends and family could follow. I started out with Instagram and nothing else. Then all my friends were using kik. Amazingly I didn’t get groomed on there or anything I just talked to my IRL friends. At 12 I found wattpad, but even then the fandoms I was in at the time were pretty innocent so I wasn’t exposed to much whack stuff until like 14-15. It was around 14 I found tumblr but even then I didn’t actually have an account, I’d just add tumblr to the end of a search term to get aesthetic images on Pinterest. My dad stopped keeping such a close eye on my internet usage by the time I was around 14 because he knew I wasn’t going to wander into liveleak type stuff by then, I was more interested in cute fanart and mermaid videos and stuff so he trusted me.

Looking back, I definitely think I was way too young to be on social media. But at least my dad was smart and kept rules and an eye on everything I did. If it were up to me, I’d only let my kid on social media after age 14, and I’d keep them on a close leash with private accounts only and stuff.

And I mean like, actually making social media accounts and stuff. Just looking at glitter graphics on Google images and playing flash games is different. What age were you when you made your first social media account or started following YouTubers, stuff like that.

Personally I think anything under like 14 is way too young and I’m saying this as someone who was on social media at 11. But I’m curious to see how badly the internet has fucked up the tween-early teen years.

I’ve been looking into the closure of spark city world because y’all have no idea how badly I want it back and to play it again. And there’s his big rumour about some hacker being behind the shutdown and man, that sounds so fake. That sounds like most bad creepy pasta hacker user story of the early late 2000s in virtual worlds ever. There IS some screenshots of this supposed hacker and their buddies but come on, screenshots are easy to fake.

If I had to guess, I’d say it was probably money or dwindling popularity as the internet started to move away from virtual worlds that drove the closure. If there was some hacker going around (which is possible because this was flash game days) it was probably just a timing coincidence.
