Mutual aid - Help Brazilian LGBT+ Shelter not to shut down!

CasaNem is a shelter in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, created by trans people to help LGBT+ people. They started with PreparaNem, a course for university entrance exams, but expanded their projects to take in people who were homeless or victimized by family abuse, and started offering labour training to help them get jobs too. They even deliver basic hygiene materials and teach people how to read. Although their main focus is the LGBT+ population, their work goes beyond.

However, CasaNem is at a huge risk of getting shut down due to lack of resources. They’re going through a particularly harrowing moment and in need of donations. They receive no institutional support and all of their services are for free.

They need R$ 21,000 (~US$ 4,250) per month to keep the shelter going. You can make a one-time donation or be a monthly patron.

The amount collected is to be allocated to the headquarters’ fixed maintenance accounts, distributed in the following areas: Infrastructure (light, internet, water, phone, etc), Logistics and Production (like transportation, materials for courses, first-aid kits, medication, etc), Hygiene and Cleaning (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, menstrual pads, deodorants, etc), Food (bread, fruit, vegetables, vinegar, pasta, etc – they focus on vegan stuff!) and Administration (office supplies, stationery, equipment maintenance, etc).

For you to get an idea of their vulnerability, CasaNem once got raided by cops who wanted to “reintegrate possession” of the house, which would lead to over 50 people getting evicted in the year of 2020, right in the peak of the covid-19 pandemic!

So please, consider donating to this super important project, and help spread the word!
