“If you keep your inner man full of wicked thoughts, even if you were on Golgotha, even if you were on the Mount of Olives, even if you stood on the memorial rock of the Resurrection, you will be as afar away from receiving Christ into yourself as one who has not even begun to confess Him.” St. Gregory of Nyssa

I ask God to remove all bitterness and envy from within me. I ask God to allow my happiness for people to be pure and genuine. I ask God to cleanse me from all feelings that are in even the slightest tainted with pride and jealousy because it is these feelings that make the heart rotten and a rotten heart is too heavy for me to carry. Dear God, purify me.

Those who are religious by nature are particularly susceptible to the danger that Jesus warns against in the gospel - false prophets. So often, especially among Catholics, there is a tendency these days to recognize as "visionary" or "prophetic" those who are most interesting or entertaining, or worse those who are most vocal in challenging or defending the moral and ethical teachings of the Church. They are attractive because they encourage people to substitute personal opinion for the voice of their conscience or to wage the Christian struggle with words and arguments rather than true love- to follow their own feelings and emotions rather than the crucified One.
These prophets come in "sheep's clothing", that is, they seem to be authentic members of Christ's flock. In fact, many are priests and sisters who have been entrusted with the care of the Church. But the discord between what they say and do reveals that they are really "ravenous wolves"; their conduct threatens to destroy the flock by seducing its members from the narrow way that leads to life.
The threat is real; and we mustn't fool ourselves into thinking that we are the simply the unwitting flock that needs to be on watch against others. No, as Jesus says, the false prophets are known by their fruits. And we all know how often we profess to be Christian with our lips and our actions betray us. Let us pray then today for the gift of spiritual integrity both in the Church and in our own lives - - that our eyes might be open to the many ways that we are Christian in name only, and that God in his mercy would protect us from all deceit and hypocrisy.

Where you cannot be, your prayer can act. From a distance, you can bring about a conversion, encourage a vocation, alleviate a suffering, assist someone dying, guide someone in responsibility, bring peace to a home, or sanctify a priest.
You can cause someone to think of me, elicit an act of love, make charity grow in a heart, repel a temptation, calm anger, smooth harsh words. What cannot be done in the invisible parts of my mystical Body! You do not know the mysterious links that unite one to another and of which I am the center.

"Silence is the result of a long ascetical program performed seriously and deliberately under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Silence is not an instant product, something achieved quickly or without sacrifice. On the contrary, many sacrifices are necessary to bring to silence all the voices of our fallen nature, our personal vices, our likes and dislikes. Silence cannot be obtained without the spirit of mortification. Indeed, there is a great need for a mortified soul and a mortified body in order to follow the Crucified Christ.
Perfect silence in ourselves is the fruit of many sacrifices, of a long period of suffering, and of many tears and prayers.
Perfect silence is the sign of the final victory of Christ's power in our life. It is a great interior silence to which we are called - a silence filled with God.
The Holy Spirit is always busy in us, always helping us not to despair but to overcome all obstacles which impede the growth of Christ in our soul and in our life. Only Saints know what price must be paid, and of the many years, to reach the point of perfect silence in the soul.
Unfortunately, today the ascetical part of our spiritual life does not have many admirers, still less, followers. Many would like to reach the peak of perfection in a very short time, without any mortification or self-denial. To them it seems that love is all that is needed because it is the bond of perfection. What they say is correct but incomplete - they do not fully understand how many sacrifices are demanded by Christian love. We cannot really love God and our brothers if we do not die to ourselves. In order to love perfectly God and our neighbor, we must practically give up many things and accept making many sacrifices. Love asks for courageous and generous sacrifices! 'Love must hurt us,' said Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
We must die in order to live and love perfectly. God has shown His infinite love for all through the Passion and death of Our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross. Our love must be sealed by the cross. Love without sacrifices is not an authentic love.
'Jesus autem tacebat,' 'But Jesus was silent.' (Mt. 26:63) Jesus was arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin. There He was falsely accused. St. Matthew says: 'The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false, on which they might pass the death sentence.' How did Our Lord answer such accusers? St. Matthew tells us: 'Jesus was silent.'
May the silence of Jesus be our example and inspiration. Let us follow the silent Master of whom Isaiah foretold (53:7): 'Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly, he never opened his mouth, like a lamb that is led to the slaughterhouse, never opening its mouth."
(A Carthusian Hermit)

"Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing affright you.
All things are passing.
God never changes.
Patient endurance attains all things.
God alone suffices."
"St. Teresa reminds us that amid the vicissitudes of life, God never changes. He is the rock that is the firm stronghold of our lives. He is enough for us. Without Him, nothing has value. With Him, everything has meaning. In Him everything exists, and everything created exists because He has loved it into being.
With the assurance that God never changes, that His love never falters, we can hear Teresa telling us: 'Let nothing disturb you; let nothing affright you.' Would that we could with each breath repeat those words and add: 'God never changes!' Then we would be anchored in the truth; then we would have the peace and the patient endurance that attain all things."
Remember the words of Psalm 46:
God is our refuge and our strength,
an ever-present help in distress.
Thus we do not fear, though earth be shaken
and mountains quake to the depths of the sea,
Though its waters rage and foam
and mountains totter at its surging.
The LORD of hosts is with us;
our stronghold is the God of Jacob.
